  1. I'd say no, I don't need any more speed bumps placed in front of Chargois and Melotakis. Anyone know what Nathan's velocity was at this spring? And does he still throw his slider?
  2. That Paul Molitor is summoning is inner Al Haig. "As of now, I am in control here, in the Twins Club House, pending return of the Vice President of Baseball Operations and in close touch with him. If something came up, I would check with him, of course." So glad you'd check with him.
  3. Maybe I missed something that you and Tony Clark picked up on, but it sounds like the team is only tracking physical activity that would already be required/assigned by the employer. Not only does that seem like common sense, but it sounds it would be OSHA approved. But again, I don't know why the team wouldn't have them on an itinerary and just track it that way.
  4. I'm surprised and impressed that the Twins were thinking outside the box. I think Tony Clark's concerns are a bit of a stretch. If there is truly a concern then the MLBPA should just require the team to share the information. I doubt the Twins would actually withhold their findings from the player himself. However this tracking does seem rudimentary as Berardino said. Also it seems odd that they'd need to visibly monitor the situation. These guys have daily schedules don't they? Don't they have specific routines for spring training and in season don't they have specific routines for home or away games; day or night games? Shouldn't they know that from 8:00 - 8:30 Sano is jogging/warming up with the other infielders, from 8:30 - 9:30 Sano is in a cage rotation with the other infielders, 9:30 - 10:00 Sano has individual fielding instruction etc...
  5. I don't necessarily disagree with this paragraph or your post in total, but once again using Phil Hughes as an example, he's been bad for two years, is now on the wrong side of 30 and has seen a large drop in velocity. History would surely show there is much less chance of him bouncing back than there is of a prospect being successful. Now the front office may have other interests than the fans such as managing a bad contract, but he still is getting every benefit of the doubt over the young guys due to nothing that he has done on the field. Baseball isn't like other industries, we know that due to physical limitations caused be age and repeated injuries that youth is and should be a huge advantage but it's not treated that way. Not just with the Twins, I'm not singling them out.
  6. I get it and we do tend to want to give the young players the benefit of the doubt, but I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that it's almost always a completion between young vs veteran and the veteran seems to always get the playing field slanted in their favor even when recent production and age should probably dictate otherwise. Cheering for the underdog in a rigged contest is a pretty natural reaction.
  7. Judging by the rhetoric regarding the front office's preference for veterans, yeah, I'd agree that's almost certainly not the plan. I'd say hope for "unintentionally" but that probably involves at least and injury or two and I'd not actually hope for that.
  8. Well unintentionally is an option also.
  9. Ha, please let that be a scout for the White Sox! It's a real shame that rival scout's team couldn't muster $1.5M to match the Braves offer to gain the rights to Kurt Suzuki.
  10. Personally, I think Buxton's strikeouts drop noticeably once he's finally able to stop tinkering with his swing for a year or so. Leg kick, no leg kick. Leg kick, no leg kick. Give the guy some consistency. (Obviously with the leg kick )
  11. I have an unhealthy desire for strikeouts, however it never seems that college K numbers are much of an indicator. I think I would be pretty skeptical that that velocity and the lack of a slider would yield sufficient swings and misses to satisfy the unreasonable voice in my head demanding to finally get an elite strikeout artist.
  12. I loved Morneau, but his swing couldn't cut it at Target Field and he always looked so frustrated when he thought he hit a bomb that would have previously gone yard at the Metrodome but it ended up coming up shy at the new field. I have no idea about the physics of it, but it seems those line drive blasts just get knocked down before they can get to the fence. It seems like the deep shots that get elevated right away are the ones that clear the wall.
  13. I can't speak for everyone else who finds that quote embarrassing, but I don't think the offensive part is about how other cultures play baseball differently, it's his implication that other cultures are raising their kids wrong. Or at least other cultures should be raising their kids the same way Americans do. Also, as a fellow American, I'm a bit offended that Kinsler thinks that there is actually an "American" way to raise people. Based on his views, I can assure him I was raised differently than he was.
  14. Sounds like the Twins are onto the top two. So that's good news for those of us who want them to pick the best player and not just the best player who will sign for an unspecified discount. If they like McKay as a bat, I still don't want him at 1:1 though.
  15. I won't say it's racism (though I won't say it's not racism either) but I will say there's no way I'd want Ian Kinsler on my team if I had any kind of notion to make my team up of the best players I possibly could from all corners of the Earth. Homogeny is boring. And limiting.
  16. If we're going with the hypothetical that Perkins is NOT going on the 60-day, I don't see why Boshers or O'Rourke wouldn't be removed. If the Twins have half a mind to try to sneak a Tonkin, Santana, O'Rourke or someone else trough waivers, it might be a good idea to do it now while the other teams are still making difficult roster decisions. Or, it's also possible there's no need to do any sneaking at all.
  17. Duffey and Chargois were co-closers for Rice prior to the 2012 draft. It seems to me only Chargois was touted as having plus velocity. I'd guess Duffey could bump up the velocity in the pen but probably not to a level where we all get excited. But that's not his calling card really, he's useful because of a really good curveball. That could still play really well in the pen if it remains a knee-buckler and was paired with a 92-93 MPH FB.
  18. I'd think a trade is unlikely almost solely because the Twins catching options are so thin. Due to injuries or performance it's not out of the question that the Twins may need him fairly soon regardless if he's ready. Also, he's familiar with the top young pitchers in the system who still have developing to do so that's a bonus to the Twins. I'd guess the Reds would have to really overpay to keep him.
  19. If a team likes a player so much that they are willing to devalue their later slots to get the guy this has always been an option. Whether BA is full of baloney or not doesn't really matter since it's completely possible and has been forever. The Padres have 11.2M in draft pool money and the Twins have 13.4M. If the Padres are willing to commit 70-75-80% of their pool to one guy then the Twins have to decide if it's worth it to match the Padres offer. I'd hold my nose and do it, but I wouldn't be happy. And frankly, it's also possible the Padres expect the Twins to draft him but WANT the Twins to pick him. Leaking this kind of rhetoric might force the Twins to give up full slot value, that would minimize the Twins leverage later in the draft and help the Padres (and all the other clubs). If my team wasn't on the wrong end of this kind of gamesmanship I might even be impressed by this.
  20. I agree. If anything this makes me want Greene more. I was just really, really hoping that the Twins could work this draft like the Astros had been doing when they were always in the driver's seat. It's looking like the Twins are going to have much less leverage than I originally hoped for.
  21. Well that was the norm prior to the slotting rules. Scott Boras wouldn't have ever bothered representing HS kids if he couldn't squeeze 3x the kids value out of the big money clubs. Small market teams were regularly screwed over until the new system came into place. Now small market clubs can screw over other small market clubs it seems. And while this frustrates me, I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't acknowledge that about a dozen pages back I hoped the Twins would promise guys over-slot money with their next two picks to try to get them to refuse to sign with clubs drafting in the 15-30 range.
  22. Yeah, that's my understanding of that statement. Kind of a punch in the gut.
  23. And I'm not a fan of lefties at Target Field. You need monster power to be a consistent HR threat from that side of the plate. McKay sounds like he has power but probably not tape-measure type power which is what it takes. And if McKay is truly a good hitter first and a power threat second, that probably means he's a line drive hitter like John Olerud who people keep comparing him to. Not to diminish the fact that line drive hitters are typically ideal, but guys with those types of swings don't usually get the loft to carry that wall.
  24. From the write up: "Everyone expects the Padres and GM A.J. Preller to try to do what it takes to push Greene down to them at No. 3," Hmmm, I hadn't heard that one before. So the Padres are going to do everything they can to make the Twins pay top dollar? The team that once upon a time picked hometown kid Matt Bush over Justin Verlander because they wouldn't meet his asking price? Yeah that sounds like the Twins luck. They get the 1st overall pick and not only does the league lower the slot values at the top of the draft which hurts the Twins ability to load up on the best talent but now teams below them are maneuvering to sabotage their picks.
  25. Well I'm pretty sure that's because he only has the vocabulary of a 5th grader. Sad.
