  1. A don't screw with the chemistry kind of deal? I was looking at Jim Johnson but then started thinking the same thing; maybe if we don't blow on it too hard it'll all stay together. We still have 20 days in the month, if the pen starts cracking up, then go nuts. I'm kind of leery messing with a good thing at the moment though. People here have got me interested in Verlander though. I don't like old pitchers, but it's only two more years after this. And he's still throwing 95 MPH.
  2. Hadn't heard that one. I'm surprised though, I thought these journeymen vets were right up Molitor's alley. But Gee-wiz, was Molitor sleeping last year? Gee pitched against the Twins 5 times last season including 4 starts!
  3. I don't like the quick hook, but I didn't get to watch the game until after the 4th inning so all I'd be doing is holding Molitor's past actions against him. I checked the game thread and there didn't seem to be much angst so I'd guess enough of our posters watching agreed with decision. And Molitor backers seem to be in the minority here these days. I will say that had he pulled Enns in the 3rd and replaced him with Gee, I would have been awfully suspicious that Molitor was trying to make a point to the front office about who he REALLY wanted to get the 5th spot in the rotation. Alas, that didn't happen so there's no visible angle there. It could have been fun drama though!
  4. I don't know how you couldn't be the #1 prospect in the game if your floor is Tom Goodwin and your ceiling is Rickey Henderson with a mean of Lopes/Knoblauch.
  5. My interest is also waning, but I still follow the Vikings. My low level of interest seems odd right now, maybe it will increase once the season starts. Maybe not. It's much harder to have conversations with "NFL Only" types. I loved Vikings Journal (RIP) but posting there was an entirely different animal than in a baseball forum. Everyone speaks much more aggressively and cock-sure regardless if there is any evidence to support their opinions. When talking football there's rarely a distinction between opinion and fact and God forbid discourse is civil if there is a disagreement. It's almost like NFL Only posters feel their posts have to be representative of what they see on the field.
  6. Perhaps not, Vargas has had a lengthy audition. Garver hasn't had one yet though. And for what it's worth, even during the years where people questioned Garver's bat, he always was really good at drawing walks. It's not like they'd be replacing Mauer with a guy who's at bat is constantly decided by the second pitch.
  7. He took a lot of walks, that is helpful for a team that struggles with offensive consistency. Still, he only had 3 XBH in July and for the year has fewer than Jason Castro and only one more than Jorge Polanco, both maligned for their offense and both of whom have significantly fewer at bats. Offensively Mauer and Grossman are basically the same guy, I don't think both need to be regulars at this point.
  8. And I don't know that there's anyone pitching over their head right now. Pressly and Belisle are pitching like they did last year finally. Weren't we all just hoping that guys like Duffey, Rogers, Hildenberger and Busenitz could be serviceable rotation pieces? Aside from an early-season stretch by Duffey and a mid-season stretch by Rogers, I don't know that any of them have really been lights out, just simply average to above average. I also like that almost all of these guys have options, if someone does go into a funk, you can easily dip down and give someone else a chance. You don't have to roster-or-lose-em like they did Breslow and Haley.
  9. Bold prediction: Enns will look no worse tonight than Garcia did for the Yankees last outing.
  10. This isn't going to be popular, but is it possible that the bullpen might be better without Kintzler? Even if it's only because Molitor is using his bullpen in better ways? With Kintzler gone there's room for Gee, who is probably the long man this team desperately needed. Pressly and maybe even Duffey can go back to being one inning or even being one batter pitchers if that's whats needed and Molitor is forced to use a young guy like Hildenberger more. Now Belisle slides into Kintzler's 9th inning role, almost always starting a clean inning where there's rarely anyone on base. I never previously would have thought I'd say this, but perhaps the closer is the least necessary arm to strike guys out. Now Belisle and his high contact repertoire is unavailable for the spots when there ARE runners on base, something that his poor 62.5% LOB% suggests he should not be doing but Molitor did anyway.
  11. He hasn't been here long enough for us to Slama-tize him. I'm excited for a new young(ish) guy, it's tempered a bit seeing as those numbers weren't going to be enough for the pitching hungry Yankees to keep a 40-man spot for him. But there are plenty of really good MLB pitchers who put up great numbers in the minors but didn't have great stuff so they never were thought highly of as prospects. And even if he doesn't amount to much in the long run, an out-of-nowhere usefulness a la Brian Duensing or Scott Diamond would be helpful right now.
  12. They'll have to make a 40 man decision on Enns at the end of the year anyway. Good idea to take him for a test drive first. And I like Gee in the bullpen better.
  13. Yeah, God forbid a right-handed hitter takes away some at bats from a first baseman with a .568 OPS against lefties and a .743 OPS overall.
  14. I agree with most of this. I'm not die-hard on needing managerial experience at this point though. Mike Matheny, AJ Hinch, Brad Ausmus, Craig Counsel, and Kevin Cash come to mind as guys who hadn't managed before getting their first hire and I'm guessing there are lots that only have coaching experience, some probably minimal. Molitor might give off the impression that it's best to have experience; so I guess I'd say I'd be open to a guy who doesn't have managerial experience as long as he played or worked in the front office during the game's modern era.
  15. I've always wanted to get an outside hire for manager because I wanted to get away from the feeling that things must always be done the same. Now that we have Falvey and Lavine here, I've softened on that stance. I think Gene Glynn might be a good manager here or elsewhere. I'm sure others here like Doug Mientkiewicz and Jake Mauer. Even with no managerial experience, I have to think the new guys have some plan for Jeff Pickler. I'd be curious about any of those guys, though I'd still prefer an outside man (or woman!). If we're going outside the organization I know Sandy Alomar Jr has been mentioned on this site several times before, like Falvey, he's a Cleveland guy. I wonder if Michael Callaway, Cleveland's pitching coach is on the radar. He seems to be regarded well, though I don't know if it's substantive or if it's because he lucked his way into good pitchers.
  16. Sounds like the start of a "How many Norwegians does it take...." joke. Q: How many people does it take to feed Trump his required daily dose of propaganda to keep him alive? A: Two, one to send him the email and one to translate Russian to him.
  17. Lavine didn't say, nor did I get the impression that they were going to ignore free agency because of these guys. Lavine just liked them, which as others have pointed out, what else would he say.
  18. It would be if Garver's playing time was basically just picking up Gimenez's at bats. As I mentioned, I'd be skeptical that Molitor would let Garver cut into Mauer or Grossman's playing time.
  19. No, no quite the opposite. Delmon Young = 2nd greatest player of this generation!
  20. It sounded more to me like Lavine liked how many options there were. Obviously no front office is actually going to expect six new bullpen pieces to emerge next year, particularly injured ones. I mean if you needed one or two to emerge and there were six different high ceiling guys who have a chance to do it, that sounds like pretty good odds to me as well. I didn't take it at all to mean that the team was going to rely on a half dozen injured minor leaguers to make up the bullpen next year. It just sounded like the team liked what they saw in these guys. I mean aside from shredded UCLs.
  21. He did talk about Garver but not a timeline. I don't like it but barring injury he probably has to wait until September unless the FO believes Molitor would actually stop writing in Castro, Grossman and Mauer on every lineup. Molitor's managing for his job, you know he's going to sit the rookie if veterans are available to him. And I wouldn't want Garver getting the short end of a platoon split with Castro, I'd want him playing nearly every day. Does your Gleeman embargo stem from that one podcast where he was less than professional to John? I forget what the debate was about but there is one incident that just sticks out vaguely in my mind but still always leaves a lingering sour taste.
  22. I'm rooting for the Twins.
  23. Pffft, big deal, Delmon Young had 995 hits when he was still only 26!
  24. So perhaps just a straight steal of 3rd? Do we have to always get cute with it?
