  1. In regards to the non-moves yesterday: Chip-on-your-shoulder Twins looked really good after the July deadline. Maybe doubling down on that chip will keep the fire going. Not that I at all think that went into anyone's decisions yesterday.
  2. They look like they're in the same spot the Twins were a month ago. I agreed with the Twins decision to sell but many didn't. I was probably wrong. And if KC is looking at an end of an era, they probably feel pressure to try for one last run. I agree about KC's FO, they were more lucky than smart. Perhaps all the more reason to try one last time to win this month; this team had one successful rebuild in two decades, they're likely not going to do it again after this tear down.
  3. I'd have a hard time believing every playoff team didn't at least ask about Verlander. We only heard about Houston, surely they weren't the only team that had a conversation. No one knew the Angels were talking Upton until the deal happened. The Twins are going to be on a lot of no trade lists, we're just not a desirable area and they aren't viewed as legit contenders. I'd have liked to make a move but of the players moved yesterday only Upton and Juan Nicasio would have interested me at their price and Nicasio never made it past the Phillies. Guessing the team could have gotten someone not traded yesterday is hypothetical at best.
  4. It would have been fun to get Upton or Verlander but they had no trade clauses so no way were they coming here when mote preferable destinations were available. I would have had no interest in 3 1/2 more years of Mike Leake. He can't miss bats and gives up tons of contact in the NL. I don't want those kinds of pitchers. Not sure who else would have been available. I might have been interested in a minor piece or two.
  5. Great, I'm just going to mark you down with "Gibson" then.
  6. Barring injury you'd have to think Santana and Berrios are locks. But assuming the Twins get to the playoffs and get past the play-in game (is there a knock on wood emoji?) who are the other two starters assuming (again with the assumptions?) they go with and need four? I'd guess Colon and Gibson. But you have Gee in the rotation now, Mejia should be coming back. Maybe Santiago comes back? Any dark horses? An August 31st acquisition? An inspired Duensing-esque late season surge by an unheralded youngster like Slegers?
  7. I moved the Justin Upton stuff to another thread FYI, same team but it seemed a bit out of place here. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/27360-august-trade-deadline-news-and-notes/
  8. They probably would but the liars further lie and say they aren't liars. Alas, there's no way to check what they say so we must just all take them at their words.
  9. Wow, the Tigers are finally doing it. Upton for a bag of balls? For the playoff run I totally would have pushed Kepler to the bench for Upton + what? Granite? Even less? Alas, I'm sure Detroit would have been much less interested in trading him to the Twins and helping a division rival make a playoff run.
  10. No one of repute has ever said that. There is so little to spend money on this off season that if the Twins were ever going to take on a salary dump, this would be the window to do it.
  11. Lewis already ditched his leg kick? It seemed to be working for him, not that I'm an expert. I thought adjustments don't typically happen until after the first season of pro ball. I guess there is a new sheriff in town.
  12. I'd also say the voting wasn't based on popularity so much as it was on fame. For one, too many of the voters weren't informed league wide. For another, fielding measurements amounted almost entirely to fielding percentage and total errors. I don't think these guys were voting for players because the players were popular, they were voting for players because all they had to work with was assumptions and "talk of the town" kind of hearsay. It wasn't nefarious collusion, it was lack of information. Largely due to the era but probably also due to a lack of effort to research the correct option.
  13. I like Lynn, and I want to like him on the Twins, but he's pretty much a two pitch pitcher. I'm not sure he'd fare too well in the AL.He seems to dabble with a curve and a change but not seriously for about three years. If I was confident he could use them and use them competently I'd be quite interested.
  14. I wouldn't be 'comfortable' with Verlander, but I wouldn't be comfortable with any free agent pitcher or trade target. I can say I'd be more comfortable with Justin Verlander taking up a roster spot this year and next than I would be with Kyle Gibson. But we're talking about pitchers so my year-to-year uncertainty is going to be there with anyone they trade for or sign. The uncertainty typically does grow with age, but it decreases with velocity and Verlander still has ++velocity. Either way, I'd not worry as much about dead weight salary in 2018-19 than I would in the years beyond as I'd like to think the team has to deal with big contracts for Sano, Buxton, Berrios and others by then. Two years just seems like a low risk, except from a purely monetary standpoint. There's just so little to spend the money on right now.
  15. If I'm the front office I trade him if at all possible but I don't offer him arbitration if for no other reason than to force myself to be actively looking for better pitchers in the off season. Not that I think they'd do it, but I'd really hate for them to look at the 40-man, see experienced arms like Santana, Berrios, Mejia, Hughes and Gibson along with "in the wings" guys like Gonsalves, Romero, Slegers, Jorge and Litttel and start to get the idea that they might have too many mouths to feed as it is. Gibson looks like the easiest subtraction to help motivate the team to chase better quality pitching this winter. Man, Kyle Gibson earning 5M bucks? It's hard to see him not getting his name written in pen for the rotation to start 2018.
  16. Wouldn't that be a reason to trade for him then? There's so little on the free agent market and realistically any trade target is likely going to be affordable and controlable. Honestly, his two years remaining is a big plus in my book, not a negative. If this team could sign free agents on two year deals instead of four year deals I'd be thrilled. I don't care about the money commitment, I care about the years. I don't care how much dead-weight is there, I just care that it can be set free in a timely manner.
  17. He might not be, but I think it's rare that you get a $13-16M guy except on a 4 year+ deal unless they too are aging. I don't think that money goes as far as it did even a couple of years ago if we're talking about pitchers in the 13-16M range. Last year Rich Hill was at the top of that range getting a deal with an average payout of 16M. So he's basically the top end of that range and also aging. So aside from getting lucky or intentionally mining for undervalued talent* I think if we want a known commodity that is a difference maker to fill out the rotation we realistically have to be talking about a 16-20M guy minimum. And on a long term deal. *Something I fully support and expect this front office to do regardless if they acquire any big ticket players.
  18. I've really grown to dislike 13-16M pitchers. From our team's experience, you typically have to give them 4 years also. I'm not asking for Verlander (though I'm not NOT asking) but I'd rather have a big paycheck over two years than the medium paycheck over four, particularly with the money falling off of the books over the next couple of years. But I'm open to lots of ideas to get a playoff starting caliber starter.
  19. Also, I've always railed against old pitchers, I never want them and I always want to get rid of them. But for the record, that's typically due to the associated velocity decline which causes them to in the best cases reinvent themselves as a different kind of pitcher and in the worst cases make them obsolete. Verlander appears to be one of those guys who isn't losing velocity so I struggle holding his age against him at this point. Seems to me he lost his velocity about four years ago in his early 30's, just as expected. Somehow it's come back with a vengeance now. I'm more open to accepting that he might be an outlier of some kind.
  20. I'm still not sure how I feel about Verlander, but I do know I want the front office to spend that money. If the front office is confident they can sign or trade for a better pitcher in the off season, great, keep the money until winter. If they think Verlander is the best they'll get, get him I guess. I absolutely do not want them doing the Correia, Pelfrey, Belisle quantity over qualify free agency bit next year.
  21. Leave it to the Twins to sign a guy who up and quits during a playoff run! Congrats Joe.
  22. I don't think he's going to catch Stanton.
  23. In my neck of the woods it's the farmers who have co-ops for both agriculture and energy and rely on the government to fix crop prices. Heck, there are government programs that at times pays them NOT to farm. ND even has a state bank, the only one in the nation. But it's only Socialism if someone else is getting it, and at that point it's quite possibly the worst thing in the world.
  24. Man that's creepy. Did you just summon his spirit? Or did you dig up his body and you're doing the whole Norman Bates bit?
