  1. The Twins seem to overcome 1-4 each year, they should be well practiced and prepared for any of those uncertainties. Number 5 is an issue ONLY if this team goes into the season assuming Santana is going to be one of their top two pitchers. It's starting to look like he might though, so that's alarming. This team really should be looking at Erv as a distant 3rd option, even a 4th if they want to aggressively content.
  2. Why aren't they? That's the exact same position they've been in with Mauer for a half decade and it hasn't had any impact on payroll. If spending on a top free agent arm isn't appealing, what is the plan for matching up with Houston, Cleveland, Boston and NY in the playoffs? Are we just going to be satisfied to get there and making off season plans in the first week of October? I'm not; I'd rather have a team that misses the playoffs but has a chance to win it all than have a team that makes the playoffs but doesn't.
  3. Cobb and Lynn can't get this team out of the WC round, so pass, I'd rather not sign anyone and work on trades instead. This team has to stop taking half measures. And if this team was never going to give $150M for Darvish, what was with all the big talk early on? They had to know that's what it would take.
  4. He gets paid a salary, he would be out that figure should he walk away.
  5. I don't see why, the Twins basically already divested themselves from his future when they decided not to protect him this winter despite having four open 40-man spots. They would have gotten 50K if he'd been taken and kept, that's all he was worth to them. And frankly, it would be hard to root for a team that asked for bonus money back from a player who busted; it would be beyond petty.
  6. Good luck to him if he decides on a career U-turn. It doesn't look like baseball is going to pay him much more than the bonus he's already received. Not sure if he ever had NFL talent but if he thinks he does, might as well go for it.
  7. I like it. I think for way too long there was way too much group think in prospect rankings. Divergent opinions basically boiled down to a difference of 20 spots or so. Prospect evaluations are so subjective and so volatile that we should be seeing significant anomalies among evaluators. It helps me believe that the whole process is bordering on legitimacy if they are each unique.
  8. Darvish. This team has plenty of mid-rotation guys as it is, they need quality, not quantity. 2018 WC matchup Tuesday Oct 2: Twins: Lynn (0-0) at Red Sox: Sale (0-0) Gross. Looks like another early exit.
  9. Hard to be bigger but could be better. The guy sounded like a work-a-holic in his pre-draft interviews. Seemed like a guy who was always looking to perfect his approach at the plate.
  10. I'd agree except then the narrative is going to be, "Why will Milwaukee spend money on an ace but the Twins won't!?! They're a smaller cold-Midwest market than we are!!!!!!"
  11. They also need to de-stigmatize the word socialism with the voters. Everything they do gets clobbered by the GOP as being socialist while those knee-jerk voters fail to understand that their Red State staples of agriculture assistance, social security and co-ops are already socialism at work and paying off for them. Socialism = bad if it's not benefiting me. Sigh. If the GOP was consistent with their message they'd be telling everyone that their parents and grandparents are commie scum and that farmers are the bane of capitalism for accepting government income and assistance. Why can't the Dems competently show this hypocrisy?
  12. I'm all for giving the rookies spotlight gigs but I don't think the front office and I know the manager aren't. If this team isn't going to get Darvish and isn't going to trade for a front of rotation arm, they should roll with the youth because their only shot at getting over Cleveland, Boston, Houston and New York is to get lucky that one of the young guys surprises everyone and steps up to be some kind of phenom.
  13. As is slavery, horses and buggies and muskets. Unless we're talking about Lee Harvey Oswald being a viable political entity, political assassination hasn't been an American pastime for a long time. Anyone claiming murder is a better option than compromise is a lunatic. And compromise still happens all the time in our government, just on a more micro level. You vote for this and your district will get that infrastructure funding, or the school improvement bill will get added to such and such a bill if we can add my economic initiative.
  14. Is that a Putin quote? Or does that go back to the Bolsheviks? Whew, just glad we're done pretending that the GOP isn't having it's strings pulled by Russia.
  15. Could really use some good news right about now Twins. It would be a great time to swoop in and tell Minnesota fans that we're not insignificant.
  16. Yeah but there's not many of us baseball fans left.
  17. None of us have any idea which players TB would actually value, but history and TB's tendencies absolutely tell us MLB ready players are weighted heavier by teams in these deals. Giving a team 15 options instead of 5 seems like a significant advantage. Maybe the other team's group of five ends up having players TB desires more, but having 15 certainly gives the Twins better odds.
  18. Having more absolutely makes a difference, the Twins can tell TB that they can take thier pick of various combinations of Gordon, Gonsalves, Romero, Kepler, Garver, Polanco, Mejia, Busenitz, Curtis, Gibson, Thorpe, Duffey, Rosario and they can discuss non-40-man players in addition. How many contenders can afford to offer up a full 1/3rd of their roster for negotiation?
  19. Most win-now teams don't have the numerous young controllable players who are both MLB ready and expendable. In the Twins case it's not a corner outfielder OR a catcher OR a back of the rotation (LH) starter OR relievers, (OR middle infielders) it's AND.
  20. I don't think most buyers want to or can afford to deal from their MLB Ready talent. The Twins have more expendable players like this then they usually do.
  21. In TB's case I think 'MLB Ready' is going to carry quite a bit of value. Overall that typically seems to be the case in trades; players with some MLB experience carry more weight than what prospect wonks tend to give them. TB in particular has always been resistant to rebuilding, I'd bet guys like Garver, Kepler, Mejia, Polanco and the various relievers actually have more value than we'd normally give them credit for.
  22. Archer is making peanuts, go get them both, the team would be a real contender then. If for some reason Archer's 6M is too much after signing Darvish, unload Santana. But exciting news either way!
  23. Well we can either suck it up and roll with the changes or be content to watch baseball the way WE want to see it and let it die with our generations. If MLB wants to outlive us it can't cater to Twins Daily poster, it already has us. It has to cater to the new generations who at this point have no interest. Sorry, the only way to stop evolution is to cease to exist. I'll take change over killing the sport for good.
  24. It was a bit tongue in cheek, mostly because I know how stodgy baseball and baseball fans can be about anything new particularly when it comes to technology, but none of those questions are viable reasons to deny the idea. All of them could be easily ironed out, just like in football.
  25. Yeah but unless they're filming it with audio for a live action Bull Durham show the nuance is lost on the fans. Scrap the mound visits by everyone, let players wear ear pieces while they are on the field. That'll speed the game up.
