I know you're absolutely not a Pohlad mouthpiece, as I vividly remember your series on their bungling of their business assets and how they were using that as an excuse to kill the Twins payroll and pin the losses on potential new buyers. But I agree with others, they aren't getting any benefit of the doubt in regards to payroll until they are back to above middle of the pack. When Tom Pohlad came out this winter and said they were going to compete after dropping payroll by 30M it sounded hollow then, and adding back merely 25% of what they cut (and 15% of what they've cut since 2023) now seems like a calculated incremental increase to see what fans will accept in exchange for buying tickets. Now, instead of adding Dean Kremer (ugh, barf) the Twins had added Gausman and Ray and took on their salaries, then I'd be open to the idea that this was more than lip service.- 33 replies

He's better than just about every one of his peers. He can and is hitting well, he's working counts at an elite level, he is a good defender, he has speed, he just doesn't have power. I want the power too, but that's not all MLB players have power and if you sit on him until it shows up when he's 26 then you're just wasting time.

Are you looking at stats or just making presumptions? Because Jenkins has a 15% K rate and 14% BB rate. I'd dare you to find five other players that can top those numbers. That's top end plate approach and those are the two areas that basically hold a player back or ensure a promotion. I'll be disappointed if the power doesn't come, but he should probably be batting leadoff for the Twins as of about a month ago.

Then you’d never call up a rookie. I think they need to prioritize having them as prepared as possible for 2027, that would mean getting accustomed to the MLB now.

I don't buy into Jackson either, but he's the better glove and Caratini's bat isn't so good that it would make a huge difference to me. Tempting a team to take his contract for next year would heavily tilt the scales for me.

Am I the only one who'd rather have Jackson? I know Caratini had a nice burst there for awhile, but I just don't see the draw offensively or defensively.

I'm not so sure about that, I know he's gained a following, but I don't think he's so much better than what floats around on the waiver wire that his salary wouldn't be a consideration. Either way, they can have him for all I care. He's average at best and this team has zero business carrying three catchers.

It's wild they went into the year with a poorly planned offensive roster and it's now somehow ever worse. Caratini and his salary probably gets through waivers though. Maybe they can still trade him if they eat some salary. That's a thing still right? The post deadline waiver dump trades?

What does this mean for carrying three catchers? Did the front office forget they had three on the 26-man?

I would have never stopped doing what was working before. Trading for good and controllable Lopez, Gray, Maeda, Odorizzi types. Easily a better bet than counting on prospects and a better value than shopping for third and fourth tier free agents. That is without doubt what I want them to do this offseason.

I have to be honest, I was already out on Dasan Hill. Really exciting pick, but guys with his lack of control at any level NEVER end up being useable MLB players. I absolutely would have sold high on him. Maybe not for a reliever, but I'm less sad about this than others.

Yeah, this is going to be a fun discussion we never get to have at the end of the season. The Twins are going to have to break the mold to offer a QO to a catcher. The other teams probably won't like that either as teams like the Twins aren't supposed to set precedent. And then on the other side Jeffers and the MLBPA are going to have to try to figure out what life after the CBA is going to look like.

Yeah, unique year but the starters on expiring contracts required the most palatable player equity in return. You basically just had to be willing to eat salary. Seemed like the best fit for the Twins so they could continue to tell the fans and players they were serious, without really impacting the competitive window by limiting development of the guys they'll need to compete, which I like to think is starting next year.

Seems like one of the three catchers is a given and at this point. And likely a 'staffer' would only be privy to the most obvious moves.

If Jeffers isn't traded, he's almost certainly getting tagged with a QO.

As you note, that’s why I would not move him now at the deadline, and I would try to package him. I see zero benefit to another rental reliever.

I would be asking for more because they were just getting a rental reliever. If that's all Larnach can bring back on his own, trade him in the offseason.

Agree, tough call, but probably because I've been waiting to see Culpepper for over a year and the team keeps denying me. I almost want to say it's a floor vs ceiling debate, but I'm not sure that's the case either. Neto looks capable of being a SS who can hit 30 HR. I don't sneeze that that kind of floor.

Not a negative for me. But I'm not the one telling every reporter I can find that the Twins are super serious and are really looking to take on salary to bring home a trophy this year. If payroll goes from 100M to 105M, that's lip service nonsense and the same old Pohlad schtick. And my urge to call such nonsense out tends to be rather uncontrolable.

That would be interesting. Controllable player and way undervalued based on the trade rumors I've heard. His strikeouts are an issue, but it's really his only issue.

Well my presumption is they already spent all they were allowed to spend. And they didn't spend it very wisely in my opinion. But a few hours left. I could be wrong and they come away with something surprising.
