  1. Yeah, revenue share clearly looks out of whack if a salary cap/floor suggestion migh actually benefit the players.
  2. What makes you think the “coping” isn’t coming from those insistant that the front office is completely at fault for not getting the preferred free agents here? You want change and you want this to get fixed? We need a salary cap and a salary floor not significantly far apart. Leadership should be fighting for this.
  3. Ottavino has awful control and was a bit of a one year wonder from my view, I didn’t want him. I would have wanted Robertson and Soria on those two-year-deals though.
  4. There are still 8-10 relievers I’d like and several of the bigger names free agents I had very little interest in. But yeah, at least as far as the pen goes it seems like they’re using last year’s strategy of waiting to see who’s still standing after the music stops and offer those guys below expected contracts, despite the front office implicitly saying that strategy might have been misguided last year. It would be nice if we had some local reporters who could get us some insight or at least educated speculation as to why this is happening again so the fans could at least understand what we’re dealing with.
  5. Yeah, metropolitan large market coastal cities. They look down on us too. Neither of you two live here, but did you? What’s the reaction of at least 50% of the people you tell that you’re from Minnesota? I’m not trying to be a jerk but surely everyone has experienced the “You’re from where?!” reaction when traveling. Why would pro athletes be any different? It’s an obstacle that can be overcome, but it’s not imaginary.
  6. That was my original and resentful take, but after just spending a week in Florida, I’m once again reminded how everyone south of here makes our area the butt of the joke. Everyone is incredulous that we simpletons would subject ourselves to such inhabitable environments. It would take an act of God, not money, to talk a young Floridian man into committing his formative years to live in Siberia.
  7. Judging by how few posters on this Twins site actually live in Minnesota, I think you’re underestimating the impact location has on these players, particularly this one. I love it here but the reputation alone is going to be a no-go for plenty of guys, particularly when you’re talking contracts in December. Anyone from around this area who has traveled south in the winter should be aware of this by the stunned look and terrible jokes made by the locals when they ask where you’re from. I’m sure there are plenty of guys who are more than happy using Minnesota to help leverage other clubs but already know they’ll never agree to a deal here. There are absolutely cities and states I’d refuse to go to even if I’m staring at other contracts that would pay me 20% less but still set me up for life.
  8. Yeah, I bet 1 year for $30-35M beats the Sox offer. But I still bet he gets 10 years $30M plus, and I’d bet he’d have little interest in spending the next decade in Minnesota. For all the grief I’ve given Terry Ryan, I think his frustration toward the end of his career was legit when he was on MLB Network and said the Twins couldn’t even give their money away to attract free agents.
  9. If they’re not worth offering a QO they’re probably not worth worrying about losing. Back end starters are fairly cheap.
  10. I think the pattern has become pretty clear, the organizational relievers with control issues are getting little to no leash. The starters perhaps a bit more so, which used to be the other way around as far as traditional prerogative went. That’s probably the path we should be expecting going forward anyhow.
  11. I’m all for the Twins spending more then they have, but I wish everyone would stop assuming Cleveland is starting to backslide. They have one of the best rotations in the league and two of the game’s best young hitters. I think they are closer to the Red Sox and Astros than they are to the Twins. My money would be on 2018 being an outlier, I think rveryone’s in for disappointment if they assume the AL Central will be taken with 90 wins.
  12. I hope he does it against both Michael and Carson Fulmer next year. But then also blows them a kiss as he stomps on first.
  13. I heard Jeffrey Loria wants back in the game!
  14. Or maybe just pitch him when the Twins are in Anaheim?
  15. Prediction, this quote will be rebutted more than any other post in this thread! But unless Herrera could convince me that he could get his K/9 back over 9.0, I agree. I want guys who miss bats in the pen.
  16. Allen wasn't very good last year, but I'd still be interested. Proven is kind of a subjective word in this case, but of the guys most people would think of as "proven" Familia, Robertson and Soria were the only relievers who I am disappointed we didn't/couldn't get. Those are the big names that as far as I can tell were still productive last year, are still piling up strikeouts and apparently at full health. Not that I don't want other relievers, just that my interest in all the rest vary and may not line up with perceived value. Buy yeah, if Parker is the best we do for the pen this year, I'll be pretty resentful.
  17. Unexciting but better than most players the Twins have signed after being DFA'd.
  18. That was my initial concern, but his velocity actually just spiked in 2017. In 2018 it was back to his career norms if not slightly higher than his years prior to 2017. I want more relievers and I know I'm on an island, but I think there's a lot of name-value inflation with this free agent relief class. I think there are equal if not better arms that aren't currently being recognized as widely. I'll take Brad Brach, David Phelps and Tyler Clippard over most of the more heralded names, though I know most of the board wouldn't be happy with those types of signings.
  19. Matt Magill had pitched all of 32 innings at the MLB level, and only 4 since 2013. Parker has two full seasons of above average to very good baseball the past two years. There are a lot of good but not flashy-named relievers available this off season. In fact, many of the flashy-named guys look much more dubious than the under-the-radar names. Ottavino? Do you know where the strike zone is? Pass. Britton? Even harder pass. Kelvin Herrera, why can't you miss bats any more? Cody Allen, Andrew Miller and Joe Kelly? What the hell happened last year, are you done? Craig Kimbrel, I know, I know, but same question.
  20. Or I guess Blake Parker as well: He was a name I was interested in when he was unexpectedly released. I would be concerned that the Angels know something the rest of the world doesn't, it's not like they're known as a penny-pinching franchise. Still, not a bad arm, hopefully they can get that velocity back, though upon further review, the 2017 velocity looks like it might be the outlier. 92-93 looks like his career norm except for the 2017 spike.
  21. I don't want Ottavino, a one-year-wonder at the age of 33 is odd but I'm more concerned with his much too high walk rates. If he's taking a one or two year deal I'd be fine with him, but he looks more likely to bust to me so three years is a flat no. If this team is going to grab some relievers with high walk rates, I'd rather it be guys who have a better track record and/or are more likely to take 1-2 year deals like Cody Allen, Brad Brach, David Phelps, Bud Norris or Justin Wilson. I'd take Herrera also but his low K rate is a bit puzzling considering his velocity, he doesn't throw a sinker, why are so many of his 98 MPH heaters getting put in play? I'd also like to grab a bounce back candidate like Brad Boxberger or Ryan Madson. Though I'd hate it if they ONLY grabed Brad Boxberger or Ryan Madson. Tyler Clippard is also a guy who tends to get forgotten but nearly every year is reliable and misses bats. Another guy who I've always been interested in and who always comes so close to putting it together but comes up short is Daniel Hudson. I'd like to have him when he finally hits that late career groove which I always assume is right around the corner.
  22. Yeah I didn’t follow them either. I just checked the TB players lineup splits in BBR to play this game. Cron almost always batted 2nd or 4th.
  23. I'm just not a fan of their prospects outside of Eloy Jimenez and one guy isn't going to save the team. Their young bats all strikeout too much to succeed and by contrast their entire young rotation struggles to miss bats. They have some strikeout guys in the pipeline but every one of them has significant control issues, which shouldn't be a surprise considering their MLB staff is easily the worst at issuing free passes; I'd guess it's systematic. This team just looks very poorly built; I don't think you can prevent runs if every pitcher has control issues and I don't think you will score many if every batter's greatest weakness is striking out. But last report I saw said the White Sox offer to Machado was closer to $200M than it was to $300M, so that's probably not happening. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2019/01/03/manny-machado-white-sox-offer-bryce-harper-phillies/2475035002/
  24. Even at those terms I might rather have Justin Wilson if we're looking at lefties. If the team is OK with too many free passes from the end of game arms, I'd rather they weren't also relying on Polanco and Sano to make the final outs like Britton will do with his heavy sinker approach.
