    I want big time players, not players who just happen to have big time contracts. I didn't like Baez as a free agent last year and I certainly don't like him any more now after the season he just had. Carlos Carrasco has to be about 60-years-old doesn't he? *Most* teams aren't moving a big contract unless it's tied to a player they no longer want. The caveat to that is San Diego is likely due for a course correction in the coming future. But that future is clearly not this year. At some point they'll likely look to off load some of their big contracts even if the big contracts are still productive. I'd like to get in on that action. Until then, the Twins need to make their own fortune, not try to sort through other teams' overpriced garage sale fodder.

    Yeah, this is what I'm worried about. I could see them completely over-compensate because they know the optics aren't good right now. Most years, Swanson is barely average offensively, He's had an OPS+ above 100 just two out of his six full seasons. I really want little to do with him assuming he too will get a long term contract. Maybe if other teams feel the same, they can do the Correa deal from last year with him. Seven years for Rodon is crazy, but I suppose at least there's a possibility of elite upside there. And if he wants seven years, you have to know he'll get it.

    Yeah, they should have told Boras from the start that Correa was out of their price range and told him they wanted Bogaerts instead.

    Agreed. Boras is not the bad guy.

    Anything more than 4 years is not terribly smart for a guy with his injury history. So if you really want him, just give him the seven years he wants. There’s no negotiations with the top salaries anymore, it’s a blind auction and the minimum bid is the player’s initial asking price.

    The Twins were unique to other teams in that Boras needed them to stay in on Correa, even if he knew they weren't actually going to get him.

    I'm not saying Kirk is the problem, but I think having an average QB is kind of like having a .500 record in that it makes it harder to get better. The Vikings were historically inept at finding QBs that's for sure, but typically, teams run through bad QBs until they find a top of the line model they roll with for a decade or so. I want the top of the line model, we're long overdue for one. But you usually can't get a Joe Burrow until you toss your still usable Andy Dalton to the curb.

    With the Twins current TV deal expiring, they are probably trying to figure out how to get fans to tune in instead. The higher the viewership, the better place they'll be to negotiate. A 107M payroll isn't going to help do that.

    Yeah, maybe you extend Lewis or Miranda, but not after year one, and neither have done ANYTHING near what all those young Atlanta players have done. As much as I like Joe Ryan, he's too old to extend. He'll already be well past 30 when his control is over.

    Boras has repeatedly said that he will not go back and give the former team an opportunity to best another team's offer. The Twins, and every team, need to make their best offer, than his client chooses. I'm sure the Twins knew 10/285 wasn't going to get it done the moment Bogarts signed for 11/280. That's probably why they were immediately on a video call with Swanson when that news broke and have started getting linked to Rodon the last several days. This buzzkill news is new to us, but the front office knew it was happening a week ago and desperately tried to pivot.

    Disagree. I don't believe for a second ownership wants a 100M payroll, it's going to cost them more in attendance and they don't want the fan anger or apathy. They aren't nickel and diming their payroll to fill out the roster either. They did intend to get a big ticket free agent, but the front office failed to realize how deep the ocean actually was.

    I'm not in the lynch mob, but they failed to sign Bogaerts by not seeing through the smoke screen Boras was running. I don't know how you get involved with Boras and don't already assume he's going to try to hustle you.

    I'd settle for lowering the beer prices. And that has been done.

    Giolito's poor season coincided with a drop in velocity. If the velocity comes back I'd be interested, otherwise I think he's taken a turn for the worse. I was pretty vocal about my distaste for Oakland pitchers, Montas in particular this past July. I still don't want him. I don't think the other pitchers improve the club that much more than just letting the young pitchers get experience. As disappointing as this off season has been, the one bright spot so far has been that the team hasn't been linked to middle of the road pitchers. They are almost always the worst investment the team makes each year. Go big, or don't do anything.

    As long as they're willing to DFA said contracts when needed. I don't want a guy like Aaron Hicks getting playing time over Larnach/Kirilloff/Walner.

    I'm less disappointed in not getting Correa than I am in how badly they got played by Boras. The Twins COULD have beat the Bogaerts deal as evidenced by the contract they offered Correa, but Boras purposefully had Bogaerts sign first so he could use the Twins to get a better deal for Correa. They should have seen through Boras' platitudes about them being real contenders and swimming in the ocean with the big boys. The Twins should have told him they were out on Correa from the onset and that they wanted the second best shortstop instead.

    Trading for a starting pitcher would interest me. Zero interest in trading for a shortstop. Especially not one that's an even worse hitter than what the team already has. As far as free agency goes, I only wanted Correa, Bogaerts or Rodon. If Rodon's not going to happen, free agency can be over for all I care. The team can take their lumps from the fans and media as they rightly deserve.

    At this point just Nola or Severino. I'd rather see the young guys than the rest of that crew as none of them have any business at the front of a legit rotation. Obviously, things can change in a year.

    The COVID year? Really? So now we're pinning our hopes on not just a recession, but also another pandemic.

    If I'm paying an obscene contract, I'd like the better player. I don't trust Swanson to be better than average offensively, so I also don't have much interest.

    Looks to me that the big markets still spent about the same, it was the small and mid markets that cut budget. How will that help the Twins? And if there's a recession that impacts payrolls, why wouldn't it impact the Twins?

    And Urias is only 25 and the Dodgers didn't do anything this off season. If the Dodgers aren't the team that signs Ohtani, my money is on them making sure Urias doesn't leave.

    To me, Ohtani, Urias, Nola and Severino are the only ones that look like upgrades to what the currently have, and three of those guys have injury histories that make Rodon's history look like a hangnail. I mean, they're coming away from this offseason with their tails between their legs, so maybe they do change their approach next year. Ownership is going to get throttled in the media and fandom for carrying an embarrassingly low payroll this year, they might tell the front office to get something done, or they're done.

    If he actually plays 13 years. I'm guessing this new trend of 10+ year contracts will eventually lead to a trend of cutting aging players while they are still getting paid.

    Catchers who can't hit are a dime a dozen though. If you need a 3rd catcher does it really matter who it is?
