    It also annoys me that they seemingly chose Arcia over Fitzgerald. Not because I wanted to keep Fitzgerald on the roster, but because it feels like they think Arcia is a known name so that must mean he's a better player. And he's not a better player than anyone as far as I can tell. Buuuut, to be fair, that's not exactly how this worked. Fitzgerald had to be on the 40-man, Arcia didn't.

    In this situation, I wonder if he'd go back to coaching or if he'd do something on TV. There have been plenty of former players and coaches who ended up being good in media platforms, but I don't remember ever thinking, 'Man, Tony Romo is going to be a great commentator!' Tomlin on the other hand has always felt like he was a host of some ESPN daytime program who just happened to be an NFL coach.

    Yeah, he never would have survived. And if he did, he didn't look like a QB that could get you out of the first round on any team. For a guy known for getting rid of the ball quick, he didn't seem to be able to do that any longer. He didn't have MUCH time, but I watched the Chargers game thinking Herbert had no shot, while watching this game I was thinking, get rid of the ball.

    Aaron Rodgers looked so old. Watching that game, it seems crazy that he somehow stayed healthy all season.

    Those are almost the right divisions, but not quite. KC would be with Colorado and the Texas teams and the Twins would be with the other Midwest teams. Anyone who's ever been to KC, or actually looked at a map would see how out of whack that part is.

    Doesn't seem to be a fit considering that until last year the Twins pen and rotation had been really solid for about a half decade because the one thing the pitchers just about all had in common was decent command. But I guess then the Twins went and threw a curve ball during the draft last year picking many pitchers who didn't fit their past profile due to command issues.

    Getting good bullpen results from starters on the farm is just as likely, if not more likely than signing mid to low tier free agents. Unless you're a top end bullpen arm, you're never more than 10 innings from being at risk of a DFA. They are not reliable by nature and we've seen a thousand times that changing, usage, teams, cities, managers, teammates or ballparks makes differences you can't even begin to predict for them. Even if the Twins spent 20M on the pen this year, it wouldn't have been a good pen. This is the one spot on the team you have to build through familiarity and patience.

    These are the kinds of former players I want as coaches and managers. You don't sign up to do this right after you retire unless you actually ENJOY teaching young players. And whether they are in the minors or majors, the young guys DO still need to be taught. They don't have the experience to fix what's not working on their own.

    Interesting, can't hurt. Paul Molitor notwithstanding, I do think the players who were NOT superstars make for better coaches and managers. If you're a Hall of Famer, you most likely can't teach another player how to hit using God-given abilities only you and a few others have. But if you worked your tail off, learned how to make adjustments, practiced until a skill became near instinctual and honed your anticipation based on experiences, all just to stay on MLB rosters for a decade, you can teach most of those things. And those traits are mostly what makes a good defensive player.

    For sure. I know both of his past head coaches have probably said they want to look like the 1985 Bears with swarming defenses and ball control offense. But neither team had Walter Payton, yet both had QBs 20x better than Jim McMahon, who actually wasn't a very good QB. Sorry, this is 40 years later, play modern football please.

    The whole offense was doing a good MN impression. The O-Line looked confused and on ice skates too. Also, does anyone other than the Harbaughs think Greg Roman is a good OC? He's not. He's awful. And not just because Collinsworth was unloading on them regarding letting NE sub out it's clearly tired defenders. But partly because of that.

    For me it's the guys like De Andrade or Noah Miller that drive me absolutely nuts when it comes to prospect rankings. The Twins JUST signed a shortstop who's defense would probably equal these guys and nobody is happy. They just DFA'd a shortstop these guys may aspire to and nobody noticed. Even if one was higher on the defense of these prospects, they'd still be guys who need to hit or they won't be more than AAAA waiver fodder. And if they had a career long enough to be free agents, if there's no offense, even the Twins can afford to pay the very minimal salary these guys would command. Prospects should be coveted for what they can bring that the Twins can't afford on the free agent market. Namely top end starting pitching and hitters in the center of a venn diagram of plus power/good on base skills/decent strikeout rate/AND good defense. Three of those areas still work. Two, maybe. Only defense? Never.

How do these GMs not get overwhelmingly concerned when they notice a player recently has inconsistent yearly results, but the good results just so happen to occur in contract years?

    Nope, it's been bad. Zero international players signed by the Twins under this regime have made the majors as far as I can tell. NINE years, that's not acceptable. But they clearly knew that. They hired Kevin Goldstein away from the Astros (and away from Fangraphs) three years ago and then put him in charge of the international operations just in 2024. So, we probably shouldn't be looking at the signings from 2019-22, we should probably be looking at 2023-2025. Of course those players are still teenagers and mostly too young to evaluate, which sucks, but hopefully we at least start seeing SOME progress on this front in the coming years.

    Yeah, I was more than fine removing him from the roster. Just not for players that were just as bad or worse than him.

    This has become a trend with this organization since they slashed payroll. They seem to think they can take other teams' aging and poor hitting AAAA-type players and fix them. Yet this team has trouble getting the guys they already know to hit consistently, so I don't understand why they think they can change players they don't know. Seriously, what was the point of DFA'ing Ryan Fitzgerald and singing Orlando Arcia? It feels like this front office is really struggling with the grass is greener on the other side syndrome. Which is crazy because the grass they seem to envy is clearly not green.

    It also seems to me that we've had some of these mundane things pushed back before because the Wilfs' don't live here and there was a scheduling issue. But yeah, it could be something big brewing or it could be sensitivity to the local situation.

    The guy is so different than every other coach in the league, but it seems like everybody likes him. It even seems like the Dolphins were reluctant to fire him even though it felt like one of the most obvious coaching changes. But I think we can safely say Flores won't be interviewing in Miami. I know Flores to the Raiders was the hot take, but they've already lined up four interviews and Flores isn't one of them. So I'd have to think even if he eventually does get an interview, he's not at the top of their list. The Ravens scare me, but if they want a young defensive guy for the job, I'd have to think Antonio Pearce probably has the edge at this early stage. He's the known figure to that organization.
