  1. That whole playoff season was incredible. I lived across the river from downtown just off of University Ave SE. I swear I could go out at night during the playoff and WS games and hear the roar from the Dome. When they came home after beating Detroit, I walked over the 3rd Ave bridge to be a part of the celebration, thinking this was my one chance to be a part of the excitement. When they entered in from the right field doors to the field it was magical - unforgettable. Little did I know that a friend of mine had 2 tickets to the WS. He offered his brother a ticket to game 7. His brother said if he couldn't have both tickets, he wouldn't go. Brother Steve invited me. My vocal cords have not been the same since. My only regret is that I didn't high-five governor Perpich when I passed him in the concourse after the game. That whole '87 vibe is coming back to me. I hope that vibe goes all the way this year too.
  2. This team: Lopez, Lewis, MAT, C4, Byron, how can you not be head over heels for them? You just want these guys to win.
  3. I was in college in '87 when we beat Detroit in the ALCS. There was a vibe. I walked downtown and got into the Dome with thousands of others when the team came home from beating the Tigers to celebrate. The sense of relief/excitement for the state of Minnesota is hard to describe. That was so special. In the end, I ended up being able to go to game 7 of the '87 series. Gaetti to Herby for the 3rd out in the 9th is etched in my brain. I'm getting the same vibe this year. What a special team. With deeper starting pitching.
  4. Listening to the postgame interviews. Dave St Peter is drunk off his ass. Good for him.
  5. I thought he said, "I respectfully disagree."

  7. Are there other parks with thick, soft padding? Would outfielders have to adjust to balls hit off the wall since they wouldn't carom as far?
  8. Brock, if you can develop a site that is as informative and fun for Brewers' fans as TD is for Twins fans, you have done WI and baseball a great service. FWIW I think one of the best logos in sports was the M logo with the barley.
  9. My story is story is similar. My interest in baseball really came from mom because mom always had the games on 'CCO. Herb was the voice of my youth. Dad didn't care for baseball. Mom grew up on a farm in Iowa that didn't have electricity until she was 13 years old. They must have followed the games in the paper. Her immigrant father was a Cardinals fan because he spent one summer working in a factory in St. Louis. Mom started out as Cleveland fan because of Bob Feller, of course. That all changed when Jackie broke in with the Dodgers. Iowa farm girl becomes a Brooklyn fan. Years later I was with my youngest at Cooperstown, and I was so pleased to report back to mom that Jackie Robinson's and Bob Feller's plaques were hanging next to each other in the Plaque Gallery.
  10. I was only marginally successful getting 2 of my 3 daughters interested in baseball. They gladly come to games with me, will pay attention when I'm at home listening to the game on the radio or watch episodes of Ken Burns' "Baseball" with me, but they don't really make time for baseball on their own. Hopefully the seed is planted, and they'll find the game. These two scamps are graduate students now.
  11. Not ordained myself, but in a past life I did doctoral work in historical theology. I consider myself an agnostic at worst, a lapsed believe at best. I think religion, and to a lesser degree, baseball, are suffering from a distrust in institutions. The church, government, media, public education are not trusted in the way they used to be 30 or 40 years ago. Some of this may be warranted, but the wholesale distrust of institutions really weakens the social fabric. Baseball is a different type off institution that doesn't suffer in the same way that other public institutions do, but when billionaires are arguing with millionaires, people tune out. Baseball used to be the national pastime. No longer, but there is still a hold that it has on our culture. People may not watch MLB, but there are still plenty of little league, townball baseball, and beer (and church!) softball teams. Do kids still play kickball? Baseball, with a big red ball. I think if you care about the game, you work within the realms of the cultural hold it has. Let MLB figure out their mess.
  12. So if by some miracle these reforms increase the popularity of baseball and the owners start making even more obscene amounts of money, what recourse do the players have to bring a little balance if they have no union? Uhhh, nope.
  13. I’m not much more than a casual fan, but is it unusual for the Twins to reach base 5 times in a game by fielder’s choice? Even Nellie was able to do it by my scoring.
  14. I like all the exclamation points!

  17. No, it's not every discrete act of injustice that gets publicized in the media. The Hennepin County Public Defenders Office just released a study that concluded that 78% of searches conducted by police in Minneapolis after a traffic stop were directed toward Black or East African drivers. According to the 2010 census only 19% of the population was Black or African American. That to me is racial bias. This is a huge, huge problem that goes beyond George Floyd and Jacob Blake. These incidents are emblematic of the problems in our culture and the pro sports athletes are now making a statement about them. I am glad they are speaking out.
  18. Totally on the level here. I watched the clip of Smith and he was talking about how hard it is to be a black man in America. Are there other sides to the story that haven't been talked about by MLB players?
  19. Not sure by what you mean when you say there is not a right or wrong side. If there is no wrong side then we make no judgements and there is no need for a criminal justice system.
