Sad for Austin Adams. You have a led like that, throw strikes. No need to walk anyone, let alone get the bases loaded. The bullpen should be set for the homestand. Whew! Unbelievable. If anything, the Twins starting pitchers suffer from sitting on the bench too long and too often!

Article: SEA 7, MIN 4: Sweepless in Seattle
Rosterman replied to Andrew Gebo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What is the perfect lineup construction for the Twins. Who should leadoff? If Kepler IS NOT the regular, should he be batting further down in the order. How long is the leash on Sano before sending him to the minors to work-it-out?- 39 replies

If Adams comes up, who is jettisoned from the 40-man. Man, the bullpen is full of waiver wire guys!

I compare the Wahoos to the Red WIngs and it is night-and-day right now. Wow. The pitching especially in AA-land. I do wonder if the Twins should promote Royce Lewis, just to push his skill set, and see if he is more challenged at the higher level. Of course, if still rehabbing, best to be in Ft, Myers. Nick Gordon is coming around...needs more at bats. But don't see much more coming out of Rochester. Was hoping some of the arms (Thorpe, Gonsalves, Littell) would be pushing for major league consideration. Still anothr couple of months to prove they are the future and push the Twins on making decisions on any of their free-agent-to-be arms. I'm hoping Rooker comes around. And can't wait to see if Sano can give us something, anything more than before.

Article: Finer Points: DFA and Waivers
Rosterman replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So is there a pecking order for a team to claim a player on waivers? Does a "trade" override that claim no matter the team, since you are just transferring a player, so to speak, at that point. What is the salary difference between being a 40-man player in the minors and a straight minor league contract? Interesting that the waiver of "getting rid of salary" happens 30 days earlier than in the past. It will be interesting to see how the trading deadline works this year, especially in regards to salary dumps. I could easily see the Twins making any of their free-agent-to-be pitchers available (Gibson, Pineda, Odorizzi) but the flipside being that they could actually add an arm (first line) in the process, too, to remain competitive...someone they may want to have on the roster come 2020/2021. -
Big Bert and the Hard Road Ahead
Rosterman commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
I'm thinking weather can be a factor, and just getting a handle on how much time he needs to get loose. Nice to have a long arm, especially for, say, a blowout game, or a short start, especially to relieve a right-hander. I say give him another dozen appearances before bringing up Moya. Or go ahead and slot in Moya instead of Magill or Morin.- 5 comments

I want to see someone step up this year from the farm club, if not two guys. Which means it will be highly interesting to see how the Twins play the trade deadline with Pineda, Gibson and Odorizzi. None of the three were a MUST extension sign, although we needed to see Pineda. So you have to weight in and their worth for bringing back talent against how secure you feel elevating a Gonsalves or Stewart of Thorpe to the majors and hoping they can keep the team competitive. Of course, the Twins could also be buyers themselves. which would make any of thre three truly expendable. Nice that Perez is holding down the lefty end of the rotation. A nice thing to have.

Don’t Look Now but the Twins Bullpen is Pretty Good
Rosterman commented on Andrew Gebo's blog entry in Around The Horn
If they can add two more dynamite arms to this mix. We have Moya and then Reed (either) in the wings. Right now, looks like the Twins may have a rotating spot or two in the 'pen. -
The Twins need to find strength in their rotation. That's Job #1. The guys have to get into the sixth or beyond. Period. Our bullpen is solid, once you can match them up to a certain order of use. The line-up is fine. Would like to see some better baserunning overall. Man, you weigh in what a good Sano would be like in this mix.

This is the season that will showcase both. Where they stand in the organization. Enough to be added, late in the season, to the 40-man and get one of the valuable September callup spots. Or do the Twins wait until mid-202 and then do the negotiation. I don't see either coming to the majors this season, with Nick Gordon needing a looksee first, and also the roadblocks currently in the outfield (with Raley and Rooker in the wings).

Four questions about Sanó's return
Rosterman commented on Thiéres Rabelo's blog entry in Brazilian Twins Territory
Gonzalez remains valuable because of his contract and skills. Astulido goes \back to the minors to work on catching, especially if Garver hits, because Willians will be the next great backup. Sano produces or is optioned out with a chance to redeem himself again. Hope he isn't the next Oswaldo Arcia. But who knows. I almost picture them sending out Cave (because of options) and keeping Adrianza until they are certain about Sano at third. -
Article: Hello? Rochester... Please Send Help
Rosterman replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Need to stretch some guys out at Rochester. And also see what do have. Worried that Odorizzi would be a five inning pitcher. Hopefully Pineda goes deeper. Not sure about the greatness of Perez. I would almost start Mejia at this point, but sure Perez will be the first option. There are at least placesetter arms. But, why or why did you throw a rookie into a bases loaded situation? What might've happened if you ahd used Taylor Rogers for that one batter?- 96 replies

Article: NYM 9, MIN 6: Forever of a 5th Inning
Rosterman replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So, will Odorizzi be able to pitch more than five innings ever again? Bases loaded, you need one out...bring in the callup! Huh? Willians grounds out...alot today! Perez, Odorizzi, Gibson....I guess the Twins really needed to sign a good starter as well as a solid bullpen arm so we can use Parker as a non-closer. Vasquez makes the shuttle ride back to Rochester? Will the snow be removed for ALL seats for Friday's game? -

De Jong. Will he get another opportunity or is he gone from the Twins. Tough world, baseball. You get a chance. Did he show more than enough to keep a roster spot by actually getting thru the inning? -
Article: Three Catcher Conundrum
Rosterman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Personal catchers for personal starters. AT some point, you ask would Garver be better served catching everyday at AAA. Especially working with the starters of the future. If you are going to be playing Castro 2/3s of the time. Willians is such a unique player, though! -
Article: The Next Minnesota Twins - 2019
Rosterman replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes, the Twins have some players that should be getting some experience, and perhaps some overmatched time, at AAA instead of the flurry of minor league free agents. Shows how rich the Twins system is of potential major league players, although still looking for that top end pitcher. I so hope that if someone goes down at second or shortstop the Twins let Gordon come up and play everyday and keep the bench guys as bench guys. Gordon is close and now that he is eating up 40-man time, needs to get the at bats at the major league level before returning to the minors for adjustments. Who is the future catcher, though?- 23 replies

Yes, what kind of playing time with all those of days. But the Twins also DON'T need that many pitchers. They have two guys capable of long relief (at least) in the pen. The hopes are that Pineda and Odorizzi will be able to get you into the sixth inning sooner rather than later. Although that will be decided soon. The Twins MAY have a better chance of sneaking Austin thru waivers, especially if he doesn't show anything in the first 4-5 weeks of the season. Again, though, glad we have him as an alternative if something would happen to Cron or Cruz. Better him than nothing. Especially with Conzalez handling third. Heck, I would like to see Nick Gordon start the season if Polanco goes in the DL. Just saying...give fulltime reps to the future, rather than the reserve.
-
Be interested to see the fate of Austin. Will he get a temporary roster spot? And Reed, too, since Cave has options. I see Romero will probably start in the minors (and hopefully start). Curious to see how the AAA/AA rosters break out. A lot of names down there for those two teams, and looking at the Twins current minor league system, it is really really pitcher heavy! Also, Adrianza. Is he on the bubble? Could anyone not on the 40-man be added. That is a big hurdle. The Twins aren't exactly rich in release candidates with nearly a dozen minor league prospects on the 40-man. And the death of the situational left, or a pitcher now appearing in more games than innings pitched...that will be a thing of the past!

Article: Intro to Building a Bullpen-MLB 101
Rosterman replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The pain is that with so many "prospects" on the roster - Littell, Thorpe, Moya, Vasquez, Romero, Gonsalves, Stewart (and Wade, Arraez and Gordon), the Twins ability to play musical chairs with any of the minor league free agent types is hit-and-miss. You play them, discard them (and they might move on) but you do need a 40-man spot for them to take. So do the prospects get the call first or names like Harper and Morin and Collns and Guilmet as well as the placeholders currently on the 40-man like Magill and Duffey (and maybe Mejia). Who will close? No situational lefty anymore...these guys are having their career destroyed now having to pitch to 3 guys! -
I almost picture Austin making the bench until a decision has to be made on Sano. Who you cut from the 40-man to add someone is the BIG question coming out of spring training. If you add a pitcher, Magill or Duffey will be out!

Article: Twins Make First Roster Cuts
Rosterman replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You do want to cut players on the 40-man who won't make the majors sooner rather than later. If something happens to them and they become injured, you are obligated to keep them on the disabled list for a certain period of time, allowing them to not only make major league pay, but then having to option them back to the minors once their rehab is done. Be interesting to see who is in the next round of cuts. Picture Gonsalves, Arraez, Wade and Gordon. Moya and Littell could also be in this group if the Twins are deciding to have Romero and Mejia fight for bullpen spots down to the wire. Remember, these guys can ALL be called back to play games as spring training continues. The Twins do have a number of 40-man guys on the bubble that they will probably keep up as long as they can and play the possible injury game (Duffey, Austin, Reed, Torreyes, Magill) all who could be lost or removed from the roster when the time comes.- 20 replies

Article: Still Free: LHP Dallas Keuchel
Rosterman replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A one-year deal, with the option of flipping him if the Twins don't compete in 2019. But doing so, you lose a draft pick. You also lose one (or both) of Perez and Mejia. Often we forget that a signing means someone goes from the roster. Also, signing him now would also mean opening a roster spot. Who does go with that move. Tyler Austin on that much of a bubble? Is he actually a better choice for a longterm deal (yes, he throws lefthanded) than, say, signing Kyle Gibson for the same number of years and/or amount? How hurt is anyone that spring training has begun? The Twins got burned last year from slow starts of Lynn and Morison, so I picture the front office going with what they have, unless we do have any serious injury concerns. -
Best Relief Pitcher in Twins History
Rosterman commented on mikelink45's blog entry in mikelink45's Blog
Go back and look at this pitching staffs of the sixties. No running 25-30 pitchers thru the mound. Sometimes the Twins had just four starters (some who relieved), one or two swing men, and a bullpen of 4-6 arms. Maybe a dozen arms all season. Of course, a starter pitched every fourth day and many did complete games, or at least got you into the sixth. And a bullpen arm would pitch multiple innings, even every other game. Worthington was amazing for the Twins. He basically was a nothing for his first decade in the National League, then showed some light with the Red before dominating with the Twins, except his last season where Billy Martin basically convinced him to return from retirement and still managed to squeeze some work out of him. 1969 was a perfect example...the Twins had 11 pitchers appearing in 21 or more games, and four guys who were in a half-dozen games of less. 9 pitchers started games. 7 pitched more than 100 innings. Three 240 or more innings. But in the days of the closer, Nathan was second best of the time to Rivera. Aggie was a gem, although he wanted so badly to be a starter. Mike Marshall worked more innings than many a bullpen arm in the modern-era of baseball. And Ron Davis got so many opportunities you wonder what someone was thinking.- 7 comments

Article: BREAKING: Twins Flip Granite To Rangers
Rosterman replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Injuries last season prevented him from making a name for himself, bringing his speed and defense to the majors. Instead it was Jake Cave who got the call. And LaMonte Wade passed him on the depth chart and other outfield candidates are further in the wings. Glad the Twins were able to at least get a low level pitching prospect for him, rather than just letting him walk. But Granite is the perfect example of the numbers game. You get one chance when you are a player of a certain caliber. You may be decent depth in an organization, but if you can't make good on being that "call-up" when needed, you will be hop-scotching thru other organizations. Yes, he is a decent fourth outfielder, if you can afford to carry that extra bench base player. The Twins haven't in the past.
