  1. Some of it is just to get a few more than the 40-men on the roster. And you need catchers, of which the Twins have a low supply. It is an opportunity to get in some extra work and open some eyes. But the majority of the guys in the organization right now will drift out once minor league camp opens. Can't wait to see what minor league free agents the Twins do sign. As well as the eventual makeup of coaching staffs and minor league coordinators.
  2. There is no grater joy than to sit around with friends and be an arm-chair general manager, field manager, pitching coach, or even a player. The wonderful world of social media has allowed this small table to grow past an entire restaurant to a stadium full of like-minded folks who listen, agree to disagree, be a bit snarky at times, make attempts (and often succeed) at humor, and even get a modicum of real information across. And combined with the dedicated folks who really do do analysis and take the time to proof-read their comments and do create discussion, often with the able assistance of a group of volunteer moderators to keep things in check...makes going to Twins Daily every day a Happy Day! Thanks for Being Here!
  3. The Twins have three guys that need to play and see how they develop. Kepler, Buxton and Rosario are the outfield. Grossman right now is the backup. Maybe Danny Santana is still in the mix as a bench guy who can also play the infield. Palka and Granite will need time at AAA and the hope is that either could come to the majors short-term if someone goes down. But you real hope is that the 4th outfielder can play as a regular if someone goes down, which means he has to play centerfield...although Rosario could also play the position. I would think there is NO leash on any of the starters in 2017. They play, they work hard, we see what we do have. No up-and-down to the minors with anyone, no matter how bad. Granite and Plaka both will have options, They really don't need a place on the roster fulltime until 2018 at best, 2019 at worst. And look for the Twins to sign a guy with possible experience to also play at AAA in case we need a quick callup. He may be another Schafer, but are we to complain? The bigger question is who goes to AAA, Vargas or Park. Unless the Twins do trade Dozier, the roster seems pretty set from the field aspect. The only real changes may be in the makeup of the bullpen and the decision on what to do with Trevor May.
  4. Some ways I don't want this trade to happen. But unless Dozier IS in the longterm plans of the Twins...like does he have a position to play come 2019 thru 2021, there is little or no reason to keep him around. Yes, we lose a lot of home runs between him and Plouffe. We do have Sano and possibly a regular DH coming fulltime into the mix, as well as Kepler and Rosario getting their act together. Polanco would bring a different mix to the position, but we need a shortstop, unless Escobar returns to his 2015 form. A bigger question is what happens if you do trade Brian for, say, four guys. You need to find roster space for at least a couple of them (which, in reality, shouldn't be hard). And you do have to ask yourself as general manager where the other pieces fit into the organization, as well as longterm planning. Amazing response on this posting. But we sometimes forget all the implications of a big trade, especially where the pieces fit. Like we don't need another first baseman, perhaps. Or what level prospect do we grab for the minor leagues and what is the chance of them making the major leagues. And does it then make other players expendable, and what can you egt for them, if anything.
  5. The Twins have to pick another coaching staff member. They have to make announcements about the minor league staff, from the coordinators to who manages/hitting coach/pitching coach at each level. Some more reorganization should be happening in the front office. Look for 6-8 minor league free agents to be signed. Don't see much else happening. think the Twins will be content to stay with Dozier for now. Buy winter coats for everyone going on the pre-Twinsfest Caravans. Oh, yes...figure out "how to sell" the team, and not the field, in 2017.
  6. I'm hoping the new regime advances the held back prospects to the upper levels rather than filling them with minor league free agents or cast offs from the indy leagues. It is nice to give guys work, and the Twins have allowed many a guy to get a bit more major league time, but still......... Of course, there are always lots of people looking for work at the more expensive minor league job payroll level. See the Twins do need a third base or two alternative, possibly a solid reserve infielder, of course catching. Always nice to have a lefty or three.
  7. Basically the Twins have to make a decision about Dozier. Trade him now or extend him. Don't pull a Plouffe and lose any traction in the trading market. You might be able to bargain out a Dozier extension for two more years (so its four) with an option, if you wish to go in that direction, but then you are doing Polanco at short and he becomes the tradable asset if Gordon is in the wings. If the Twins do trade Dozier, they have a glaring hole at shortstop. And we aren't sure what Sano will do at third, although he will have to play there as too many bodies at the 1B/DH inn. The Twins need to address catching. Right now they have little at the top two levels. They have too many pitchers on their roster that would be AAAA fodder. But the pitchers in the minors aren't ready yet. Do they spend more money for more arms that can't find a major league roster spot elsewhere? Or do they wait. The Twins are waiting to see what Perkins and Hughes can produce. Sadly, neither will probably be fully ready when camp breaks, thus Haley is a potential member of the rotation. Wheeler, Baxendale? Will they get shots? Do they need shots?
  8. So tragic. Sad.
  9. So kinda like all those bad Johan Santana rumors: Red Sox offer Lester, Crisp, Masterson, Lowrie and Bowden. Twins want Ellsbury. Yankees offer Hughes, Cabrera, and two other prospects, but Twins want Kennedy. True or not True! Even that the Twins wanted Pelfrey and Fernando Martinez but settled for Humber and Gomez and those other two guys. We forget that this stuff becomes FACT on the internet at some point!

    My Rule 5 Pick

We have Pat Light doing this already!
  11. I can't believe this deal isn't happening. I mean, six players for Dozier!? Who would've thunk. 36 pages of responses and no deal in place. Rumors are fun, but not this much fun. Say, did you hear that a Danny Santana trade is going down in the next 24 hours! Or maybe it was a Santana from some other team. Gotta check out my source again!
  12. It will be interesting to see if Turner can stick. I think the Reds may be thinking more of swinging a trade with the Twins. But suddenly, name the catchers the Twins will start at AAA and AA this season?
  13. Well, if the Reds carry a third catcher, Turner will stay. Otherwise, don't see him as just a bench bat. Interesting that the Twins didn't get raided in the minor league portion of the draft. So, we still have Wheeler and Baxendale. Not that either are top prospects in the system, but they do give us depth at Rochester and Baxendale is...interesting.
  14. Be interesting to see what kind of market there is for Revere. I miss his smiling face in Minnesota, but the Twins do have to go with Buxton, and they do have Granite in the wings, as well as Palka, who pushed away Walker. Revere would probably be too expensive as a 4th outfielder at this point.
  15. Right now, Polanco at short and assume Dozier won't be here in 2018, when Gordon comes up and Polanco can move to second. No reason to start Escobar, yet. I think Polanco will work his butt off and not have a soph slump.
  16. It is totally up to Park and Vargas to beat each otehr out. If Vargas has a hot spring and Park doesn't, Park goes to Rochester for seasoning. Vargas should have his agent exploring any international deals possible to escape being designated for assignment, perhaps, or playing abdly in the majors and not finding a future home here. Although not a great season in 2016, it should've drawn some interest from the foreign leagues. Now he competes with Chris Carter, though. The Twins do not need to cary three guys or can play first. They also have Palka in the wings as a backup. And waaaay back I thought Kepler might've been groomed as a first baseman of the future. The Twins do have choices for when Mauer leaves, including a move of Sano at some point, if he doesn't become the lifetime DH. 2017 will be an exciting season.
  17. I want to encourage folks to give Al Worthington his due. Many, many fine seasons out of the bullpen, especially when relief pitchers threw multiple innings and saves weren't the totally hot commodity that they seem to be now. He also stood his ground when a member of the Giants and their stealing of signs from the bleachers. And has forever been a strong member of the community as a player and afterwards. I would throw in Brian Harper, the unsung guy behind the plate who put the ball in play, seldom struck out, hit for great average. He was dependable and played his heart out FOR THE TWINS! As did Tovar, one of the more exciting players of his day, the man without a position! Many of the others will get their due (Cuddyer for sure) over time. But I want to reward one of the oldersters fer sure, Worthington, before he passes to relief pitcher heaven! Wonderful, wonderful man!
  18. Wow! What does the future hold for Walker? Probably another waiver move off the 40-man. Someone will NOT claim him. Then he will make non 40-man money for a season and still might earn a call. If I was his agent, I would be talking bigtime with Japan or Korea and getting him out-of-here and over there. At some point he might just drop out of sight, sadly. It's all a game of numbers. He was passed by Palka in the Twins system, supposedly. But that still makes you wonder why they 40-manned him. I doubt anyone would've carried him on a major league roster last season. We see there is some interest in him now, but waiver wire claims are basically free until you have to pay out salary. Yes, guys should be required to stay on a 40-man for a set period of time (three weeks minimum). I wish we had gotten a quick look at him in a Twins uniform in Target Field. He was, afterall, a Top prospect for years!
  19. Unless Ben would fit into a longterm picture, the Twins do have to see what they can push out of Buxton, and Granite is in the wings and should produce similar numbers to a Revere at a much cheaper cost.
  20. Interesting that he's also been a minor league coordinator. The real coaching shuffle will happen if the Twins make major changes up-and-down their system, especially in the main coordinators out of Ft. Myers. Be interesting to see the final coach choice. Well, Molly and Allen managed to hold onto their jobs for another season. We can only wait, see and hope!
  21. It all depends if they think Santiago is worth $8 or is there another pitcher out there for the same (or less) that MIGHT just give you more. Gibson you can stomach, because you need the depth. Kintzler and Press are both good set-up men and cheap for the short-term and you pretty much know what to expect. Yes, the Escobar situation can hinge on Dozier, but unless you truly need the roster spot, he is a possible flip player. Any otehr team would grab him for roughly that amount to be a backup. None of them have any trade value at the moment. Gibson NEEDS to pitch well...and then I would dangle him out there in mid-season. Santiago is a big question. Personally, I would go forward and NOT offer him arbitration. I doubt he would sign with the Twins then for less or even a multi-year, which he probably would get from anyone else. The evils of arbitration. A gamble on worth now. And he ahs done nothing FOR THE TWINS in the past to deserve a higher reward. Plouffe WOULD'VE DESERVED the higher reward but became a subject of no place to play in the grand scheme of things (I would rather have kept Plouffe over Mauer at this point BECAUSE Plouffe could play first/DH and third, as well as the outfield in a pinch...for $8 million he would've been an expensive utility player, though).
  22. It is a great loss to the Twins, albeit they may be heading in a different direction and may be looking at analytical more than on-the-ground looksees. Ryan can also learn by going elsewhere. Although reteaming with MacPhail is kinda like bring a band back together.
  23. Former Twin Kris Johnson just signed a three-year extension for around $13 million, after two brilliant seasons with the Carp.
  24. It's a good money move. And puts you in a possible better position to come back towards a major league contract, or may like it over there. If you have the ability ti live in a foreign country and play baseball. Do it. Maybe Byung-Ho Park was a secret recruiter over here!
  25. At the same time, Falvey probably knows their flaws too, and participated in the discussions that led to those players being left unprotected. I'd be rather surprised if the first overall pick came from Cleveland or Texas (unless there is some obvious consensus candidate from one of those orgs). Too many interesting guys on the board at that point, familiarity just isn't going to be much of a factor. Maybe if we try making a second round selection, although that might be pretty unlikely too. Good counter point, although Cleveland's 41st player is better than some on our roster. The reason I think it's possible is no one really blows me away as the top prospect to pick first.A bunch of guys with no control, a couple guys who had career seasons, a few that are far away from the bigs and would sit at the end of the bench collecting dust. SEE ABOVE I actually think the 41st player on msot roster would be better than at least a half-dozen guys still on the Twins 40-man.
