  1. It looks like they currently sit at 39 on the 40-man. Assuming Gordon and Wade are givens, and adding Reed and Anderson to that list, they'd need to clear up 3 spots. Plenty of fat on the roster that could be trimmed: - Decline options on Morrison and Erv - DFA Field, Grossman, Slegers, and Duffey That would put them at 37 - assuming the 4 are added. Once other team's castoffs and FAs start rolling in, you've got Magill, Drake, and De Jong that aren't likely to be missed. Also wouldn't be opposed to trading Reed and/or Odo if anyone came calling on them (but they probably won't).
  2. I guess I really only had two issues with him: questionable bullpen usage and leaning too heavily on his security blanket veterans (Wilson, Belisle, Gimenez) when they're not getting the job done. Some of that is playing with the toys he's given, but some toys got played with way too much.
  3. How about the fact that he couldn't hit water if Astudillo was sitting on his shoulders in the deep end of a swimming pool?
  4. It could also be animated show that re-imagines all of the "very special episodes" from '80s and '90s sitcoms. The Fungus works to keep Buxton and Sano from going in the backroom of the bicycle shop to watch nudie cartoons and drink juice boxes that make them sleepy. He helps Kepler air-guitar Doors songs to understand the drunk driving death of his best friend. The Fungus might even have it in him to help Rosario and Austin convince the girl from Jurassic Park to tell the authorities that her step-dad is hitting her. The important thing is that they're learning.
  5. "For how long?" is the question. Falvine can't seem to quit him. I wouldn't rule out him sticking around like a bad toe fungus ... but a toe fungus that can teach everyone else things.
  6. How about Erv to the 60 to make room for Jake Reed? This front office is losing me in a hurry.
  7. So, I guess we know who the president of the Lewis Thorpe fan club is.
  8. Now, having said that, watch as Molitor uses him as the "opener" on Sunday.
  9. We've been hearing about Kohl for so long I think some of us forget he's only 23 years old. Good on him and good luck to him. Gonsalves' time is coming, as is Thorpe's and Romero's. Can never have too many arms, and it's time to find out whether Kohl can be one of them or not.
  10. I'd let it play out before I'd consider it. He's been pretty bad for the last year +, so I would want to see it for more than a couple of games. I also wouldn't sign him and Adrianza. They seem fairly redundant defensively.
  11. Good point. Asian guys like Albert Pujols always seem to break down once they hit 35.
  12. The risk is overpaying to keep the status quo, which clearly isn't working, intact. Overpaying for Dozier (my guess as to which one would get it if only one were to) would give "well, we paid Brian, now we need the young guys to step up more" excuse to fall back on. Enough "bad signings" (Morrison, Lynn, the hypothetical overpaying of Dozier/Escobar) and the purse strings will tighten back up if there's no on-field results.
  13. $17+ million annually - even on a 1-year contract - for either of these guys would be a huge risk.
  14. I see virtually no chance Mauer signs off on a trade, so might as well just take it off the imaginary table.
  15. I'm actually equal parts shocked and confused as to why Lewis is still in Cedar Rapids. It feels like every time I look at a box score he's doing something positive. Is his defense such a work-in-progress that it outweighs his bat? The time seems like it would be perfect, as would anyone really mind if Brandon Lopez didn't get any more run?
  16. It's just nice to see that anemic hitting, at least at the lower levels, isn't caused simply by collecting a paycheck from the Twins. Seeing some of these young guys perform gives me hope for the future ... even though I think we had that same hope when the current batch of MLBers was on the rise.
  17. I know the WNBA allows sponsors on the jerseys, MLS might, too. Any chance Chico's Bail Bonds would like to slap their name on this band of ragtag scamps? Perhaps the money could go toward paying the rest of Lomo's contract and they wouldn't feel the need to hang on any longer.
  18. I think you've forgotten about how they excel at making other teams feel really good about themselves. So, I mean, they might be a really bad baseball team, but they're contributing to the mental well-being of their opponents. You can't put a value on the happiness of others.
  19. C'mon, I mean, sure, B-Wil was 4 for June, but he also had a 6-6 K-BB rate. #littlemiracles
  20. I believe he's out of options, so they'd need to DFA him to send him down.
  21. You're gonna get torched for low-balling our hometown hero. Get ready for numbers from 6 years ago and arguments about how Eric Hosmer went Great Muppet Caper on Joe's gold glove.
  22. I stand by my previous statement of raw nerves. Just like Mauer doesn't owe the Twins a "make-good" contract, the Twins don't owe Joe another contract just to keep him around. And that, I think, is what the actual point of the column was. I'm not sure who overreacts more - the hardcore Mauer detractors or the ones who feel they need to defend him at every turn.
  23. Man, your nerves seem a bit raw on this one. When I read Souhan's column, I didn't view it nearly as negatively as you seemed to have, and that's really saying something. And the part about being a financial burden at the end, I took that to mean - don't give him a $15-20 million contract, not "pay him the league minimum or it's too much." It feels like you reached a bit to find something to get upset about here. And now I'm upset because I've had to partially defend Souhan
  24. That said, I'd argue the "quality" AAA depth they brought in was really more quantity. Cave was a decent pick-up, retaining Vargas was an OK depth move at the time, and Carter is a low-risk move that could help should something happen to Mauer and/or Morrison. The rest though? AAA depth is great, but wouldn't you want that depth to be able to contribute something should the situation arise? Honestly, Petit, Featherston, Wilson, and Aybar aren't guys that could do that. It gives Rochester a handful of former MLBers to promote, but are they capable of doing anything at the MLB level? The same could be said for LaMarre (Mr. Great Story). He's acceptable in the field, but his bat is pretty atrocious. The problem isn't that these kinds of guys are around, it's that they're so prevalent and the next line of defense when starters go down. If the injury call-ups are going to be bad, I'd rather watch a young guy be bad than an older one with no future.
