  1. I've got no issues with taking fliers on guys, but right now 60% of the rotation fall into that category. Even when Pineda is back I don't view him as anything close to a safe bet given his past.
  2. If this is the best they can find, just let Dobnak and Thorpe eat the innings. They can't be much worse and they at least offer the upside of being young and unknown.
  3. If you're going to quote me, you could have at least replied so I knew you were calling me out on my Cave take. You can look at OPS+ all you want, but Jake Cave isn't a better hitter than Rosario. He might be a better value in pure salary numbers, but that's where the comparison ends. The guy is a decent 4th outfielder, but he's average at everything and great at nothing. I would 100% roll the dice on Larnach, Kirilloff, Rooker or even Blankenhorn over him as an everyday player, because it's likely he's reached his ceiling, which is fine for the role he fills, but not as a starter you can trot out there comfortably for a full season. At least he's not Ryan LaMarre.
  4. Good catch. Add Rooker to the "trade for pitching" pile.
  5. Most likely, assuming Buxton stays healthy is he mans CF, with Max in one corner and Larnach in the other. Kirilloff becomes the primary 1st baseman, Rooker the DH, and Wade the 4th OF. Eddie is probably moved for pitching. Cave, do we really care all that much? Raley could also be moved for pitching.
  6. Well, two of the first six guys you named are with different organizations now.
  7. Same, but at this point I'd be surprised is he pitches more than 25 innings for them.
  8. I'm really pulling for that banana peel you mentioned.
  9. Maybe if he had a better back story they'd let him be a starter. But story trumps stuff every time.
  10. The fact that we're still pushing these "trust us, guys, Randy is really, really good" and "Homer's second half negates everything back to 2013" narratives is astounding. Of course this team needs to add another arm or two. What if Jose is what he is and he's plateaued? Cool, he's still a 2 or 3. What if the 2018 Odo is the real Odo rather than the 2019 version. Cool, he's still a 3 or 4 (since he doesn't pitch deep into games). Do we honestly think Pineda will finally stay healthy for a full season? Do we honestly think Hill will finally stay healthy for half of a season? Are Randy and Smeltzer legitimate big league pieces or are they good stories with stuff the league will catch up with sooner rather than later? Can Lewis miss bats at the major league level? Can Brusdar's stuff translate to the MLB rotation or is he more on a bullpen arm? Are Duran and Balazovic ready to make the jump if all of the above fail? There's depth, yes, but it's back-end depth. "Raising the floor" is a fun way of saying "we've got a bunch of guys that are of the same average ability." No matter now good this offense is, they can't win every game 21-14.
  11. Thank you, Astros, for providing us with yet another reason as to why the Twins can't win big games on a consistent basis. Always nice to have another arrow in the excuse quiver.
  12. All of this. And I'll add a "what did they do to stave off the teams coming up behind them?" Hint: it's the same thing they did to close the gap with those above them.
  13. His body will probably take care of that for them. I'm expecting nothing from him so I can be surprised.
  14. I just don't know that either would be willing to do it. Sano has always struck me as a guy that wants to be on the east coast, and I think Berrios has so much confidence in himself that he wouldn't sell a couple of years of FA for more up-front money in his arb year. Obviously I could be wrong on both accounts and they'd be willing to work something out. Or maybe they don't fit into the "5-year plan."
  15. The only way to get anything out of him is if he looks like this every second he isn't on the mound:
  16. So success is measured on resigning your own players and jacking bombas (with a juiced ball) all the way to another 3-game sweep? A number of the young arms they've stockpiled - Graterol, Balazovic, Thorpe, Colina - were already on hand when they got here. Once they identify a need, identify the solution and acquire said solution, or these young players start contributing to the big league team - either directly or because they've been moved for big league pieces - I will trust them. All I've seen so far is short-term, low-risk/low-reward moves on marginal veterans. A couple have hit, but most haven't. For every Nelson Cruz they've pulled off there's a Blake Parker. IMO, the jury is still out on them.
  17. Are we talking about Homer Bailey pitching 150+ effective innings or simply occupying space on the mound? Because they're drastically different things - like Tortuga "being able to play" multiple positions and occupying space around those positions are different things.
  18. But when can we actually call time of death? First it was "they'll get what they need at the deadline." When that didn't happen it became "they'll get what they need in the offseason." Now that the meal is over, they're picking at the scraps and it's become "the offseason isn't over yet." Who is this mythical unicorn that's suddenly available via trade that wasn't out there at last year's deadline? The team became competitive before they expected and they're still stuck in their long-term plan. They're seemingly not ready to run with their prospects or know which ones they can move to get the pieces they need. So, will we actually say it's done when they don't trade for anyone, or will it simply become "well, they can go get whoever they want at the deadline because they've got flexibility." I'm sick of being patient and not winning championships.
  19. If you'd told me at the beginning of the off-season that the choices were rolling with some combination of Dobnak/Thorpe/Smeltzer or Bailey and praying for late-career health from Hill, I would've (after wiping the vomit from my chin) said "give me the young guys" - even though I think all three of them are AAAA filler.
  20. Rogers will be entering his age 32 season and Garver his age 33 when they hit FA. How much do we think this FO will spend on either? IMO it's too early to worry about Arraez and Buxton needs to prove he can stay somewhat healthy before you even think about waving big money at him. That leaves Berrios, and he strikes me 100% as a guy that has so much confidence in himself that he's not going to sell out any of prime years for a lower guarantee. I hope they try, but I'd be shocked if he accepted. And, given how this FO apparently views/values its prospects, there won't be any need to sign the existing pieces beyond their current contract terms.
  21. Where's this improved starting pitching? Best case scenario, it's on par with last year.
