  1. I'm not sure "mirage" is the right term, but I agree with your general point. They're benefiting from a terrible division. I don't think they really intended to be in this position this season, but are taking advantage of it. I think they're offseason plan was to keep the valley shallow instead of bottoming out by keeping a relatively competitive team intact with the intent of getting the youth some major league experience in the process. I think they're still largely doing that, they just happen to be on top of the division in the process. Their goal was always to be much more competitive next season, and like you mention, the deadline acquisitions bear that out too. And they did that without dealing a top 10 prospect in the process.
  2. I actually sold my tickets to a friend, but that was before the concert was announced. I'm not a country fan either, but I may have stuck around because I do enjoy concerts. I'd be less than functional today if I did though.
  3. I'm just waiting to hear that all of these deals have a hidden PTBNL clause in them somewhere that requires that player to be plucked from the major league roster and has all-star appearance minimum requirements.
  4. I heard that the asking price was absurd. Maybe it's a small blessing!
  5. I'm not sure I'd go as far as to say that the bullpen is a strength, but I'm certainly less concerned about it than I was. They're going to have to show me more than once that they can lock down a game. And preferably against stronger competition than Detroit. That said, I like the additions that were made. It was great to watch a game that I wasn't just waiting for the impending implosion for once.
  6. How refreshing it was to watch such a clean backend of the game. I hope to see much more of that down the stretch. It's also great to see immediate returns on 3 of the new acquisitions. Hopefully we'll get to see good returns on the fourth in short order.
  7. Immediate returns on the trade deadline acquisitions!  Can't complain about that!

  8. 2 of 3 from Detroit is nice, but winning the series against Toronto would be much nicer!

  9. Nice trade deadline, FO!  The wait was painful, but at least there was a reward at the end!

  10. I like this quite a bit. Good cadre of players going back to Baltimore, but they didn't give up a lot of quality so they still have plenty of pieces to make more moves.
  11. I've mentioned this before, but my pre-season take was that the youth of the organization would determine how far this team goes. That's still true. I don't think that they intended to be leading the division for most of the year to this point. I think they tried to keep the valley as shallow as possible and worked to set up a good run next year, but I don't think they planned on being as competitive as they have this season. The Correa signing was a win/win in any situation. They needed a SS, potentially for just one season. They signed him to a deal that I don't think anyone seriously sees playing out to completion. The Lewis injury complicates that considerably. But the way the staff was built does not scream WS title contender at all. Injuries have decimated that plan in my view, but it wasn't set up to do a lot of damage in the first place. Partly due to injury, partly due to ineffectiveness, I don't think the pitching evolved they way that had hoped. With all of that, you have this strange dichotomy of an absolutely brutal division that leads to a pretty average team leading the division for 4 months to this point. So they've put themselves in a situation where they find themselves on the doorstep of a divisional title, an IL full of trade chips and guys that they'd hoped to contribute now, and in serious need of pitching help. I'm not sure that they completely failed, I just don't think the season has played out in a way that they saw it unfolding. The injuries this team has suffered the last couple of seasons is astounding and has impacted organizational depth, but they haven't really had many, if any, minor league players jump up and fill a void when needed either.
  12. At this point, DFA makes the most sense if a taker can't be found. Even with Kirilloff out, there are more productive pieces that shouldn't be taken out of the lineup for him. And he's not in the long term plans, so the time has probably come to go separate ways.
  13. Anyone hear any trade rumors that have any Legs?
  14. Always nice to get a sweep coming out of the break.

    On to Milwaukee!

Yep.  And on to a sweep for the Brewers!  Darker days are ahead for the Twinkees...

  15. I mentioned this in the game thread, and hinted at it in the intro, but it's one thing to lose heading into the break. Quite another to get bludgeoned, by a division rival no less, heading into the break. Not a good one to sit and stew on for nearly a week. Hopefully that wait has a positive impact.
  16. I'm not sure there truly is centerfield depth, but if the right deal came along for Celestino or Gordon, I wouldn't hesitate. Gordon might actually hurt more given his ability all over the field, but likely has less value. Cave poses an interesting scenario that I wouldn't hesitate to part with, but likely doesn't have a lot of value either. I'm completely comfortable with Kepler filling in at CF in the short term, but a prolonged Buxton injury may be an issue. If Kepler is dealt, this conversation gets much more complicated.
  17. Well deserved congratulations for both! Hopefully the first of many! Enjoy the game!
  18. Pujols tied some guy named Musial today for 3rd all time extra base hits.

  19. Something would have to change in Cleveland and Chicago too I order for that to happen. Not saying it can't happen, but it really hasn't happened yet.
  20. Despite all craziness over the last month or so, this team finds itself in 1st place and gaining a bit of ground. Cleveland seems to be regressing and Chicago can't get out of their own way. Looking forward to this last sprint to the AS break.
