  1. Headline: Garcia pitched a great game last night. Reality: 3 runs in 7 innings is an ERA close to 4 without pitching to a DH. Blah. Falvey - I'm ordering you not to trade any high potential player.
  2. Pass The Twins are not optimized for 2017. I thought Falvey was better than this.
  3. When the numbers come out, they will provide further insight. In the mean time, my guess is they valued getting Leach at under slot and thought there would be a few overslot guys remaining after the first day. General analytics would assume price dropping overnight. Maybe the overslot guys price dropped overnight from 2.6 (slot #24) to 2.2M (slot #30). If so, another 400k saved to add more talent.
  4. Derek & Thad had a plan: -- maximize talent by squeezing the top draft pick -- see if McKay would accept a under slot #4 pick deal to save even more -- favor position over pitcher at 1:1 to lower risk -- obviously really wanted Rooker at 35 -- do an over slot deal in the 3rd instead of the 2nd to lower risk (could negotiate overnight) Their draft seems to have had good reviews. We'll know a lot more in 4 years.
  5. This should be the trade basis: The Chicago Cubs have traded starting pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the Oakland Athletics for 2012 first-round pick Addison Russell, 2013 first-round pick Billy McKinney, pitcher Dan Straily and a player to be named later, the Cubs announced Saturday. Acquiring Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from the Cubs puts the A's in a strong position for the rest of this season, David Schoenfield writes. Samardzija, 29, is 2-7 with a 2.83 ERA this season. Hammel, 31, is 7-5 with a 2.98 ERA after his latest win, earlier Friday against the Washington Nationals. Hammel is set to become a free agent after this season, while Samardzija has one more year of arbitration before becoming a free agent.
  6. RELAX. Twins have the first pick on waiver wire and they're probably setting up initial roster to minimize 40 man roster decisions. Let's check the 25 man roster in two weeks before jumping off the bridge. Hopefully the older bullpen arms have good first halves to flip them for prospects.
  7. Dodgers needed a big RH bat vs. LHP. Dozier .965 OPS Forsythe .775 OPS If Dogers were trying to steal Dozier with Forsythe as the back-up plan then I say sometimes the best deals are the deals that you don't make.
  8. Padres beat write saying: Diaz traded for Haley, PTBNL, and cash
  9. After the Rays/Twins trade (Young for Garza), the Rays GM said it was much easier to replace a OF with a platoon than find a starting pitcher. I know that sounds simple but the Twins were stuck in the 1970s concerning platoons.
  10. Another A.L. scout told me that if he was making the call, he’d take Wright first overall right now. Does the scout's team have the 2nd pick?
  11. I would have the order: 6. Mejia (AA & AAA production) 7. Stewart (very good ERA but BB/K needs improvement) 8. Javier (potential) 9. Blankenhorn (2B defensive concerns & lower level) 10. Diaz (DH/1B & lower level) After QB in football, starting pitching is the most important position (See Giants).
  12. Graterol sounds interesting but too high. I would have swap Hildenberger and Granite. Hildenberger was drafted low and people may compare him to Slama but his control is five times better. Thorpe could be top ten a year from now.
  13. Blueprint: Steal players in trades: Jake Arrieta and Rizzo Sign big time and costly Int'l Free Agents (think more Sano) Be at top of draft and get sure impact college players (Bryant & Schwarber) Know your timeline and trade older players for top prospects (Russell - SS) When close to contending sign a Ace (Lester)
  14. Wheeler not added to 40 because they're probably not sure if he'll remain on the 40 during the off season. Rather a club have to put Wheeler on their 25 for a year than put him on their 40.
  15. Rays traded Wil Myers for Stephen Souza who at the time was in AAA. Not sure of the remaining Rays. Go with the most sure thing - Ben Cherington. He worked under Theo, built up the prospects, traded for Porcello, and Boston wanted to keep him after they hired the new President. One blemish is the Sandoval signing.
  16. How soon is the outside GM being hired? Demoting Berrios and Duffey - why? 2016 is all about development and isn't Neil Allen the best Twins pitching coach? Antony figured out on the same day that both pitchers had no confidence or their performance wasn't satisfactory. Put Mauer on the DL and call up Vargas. Repeat 2016 is all about development.
  17. Concussions are not just a one or two week item. Each successive concussion needs more time to recover. Obviously they thought more highly of Turner coming out of the draft. I think it's hard to know the true impact of concussions has had on his playing time behind the plate the past two years.
  18. Mauer's production is dramatically down Mauer is overcompensated. Mauer's injury shifted him from a strong position © player to a average (1B) player. Mauer is in the way of the Twins rebuilding I think everyone likes Joe as a person just not the production.
  19. Any 2017 roster decision must be based on 2018 and after. Plouffe, his 307 OBP, and 10 mil contract - gone. Milone - gone Santiago - TBD
  20. Comparing Nunez and Grossman is like comparing apples and oranges. Nunez is a free swinger and Grossman takes "professional" at bats. Nunez MLB career .312 OBP (age 24 -29) Grossman MLB career .343 (age 23-26) just entering his prime Their MiLB OBP has a even bigger difference .400 OBP players don't grow on trees. At the very least I want him around until it's proven otherwise.
  21. .266/.392/.436 - 2016 .333/.422 /538 - vs LHP Unless you get great value in a trade, you keep and play Grossman as a minimum as a 4th OF/DH vs LHP. He even has a .376 OBP vs. RHP. Slash lines say it all.
  22. Buxton should have been in AAA for the past month but Ryan brought him up to get some wins with his defense. 2016 is all about development and Buston is and has been lost at the plate. He needs to be in AAA to relax, gain some confidence, and work on his hitting and bunting. Twins fans need to have patience.
  23. The following will be unpopular but Twins should send Buxton down to AAA to play everyday, work on bunting and everything else. At the same time, tell him he's going to play every day in September when he comes back. Maybe that will give him the freedom to relax, enjoy baseball, and build up his confidence. Only bring up those who are no-brainers to be added to the 40 man this year.
