  1. Chargois won't be too hard to make room for, Berrios shouldn't either but we're talking about the Twins here, and Polanco enters into a jam as well. I think the fear or Antony handling trades is real, but I also think some of the players mentioned previously have to go in order for these 3 to see significant playing time, and I believe there is value in that as well. Its sad but given the handling of the younger players and the favoritism shown towards vets or higher salaries I don't feel confident in the Twins to give playing time to the players that need it, while the others are still in the picture. In essence its like taking a ratty blanket away from a child so they'll use the new, clean one.
  2. That was exactly my point; if they aren't willing to push aside some trash because they're paying them larger salaries, then moving Santana or Gibson would at least bring back some sort of prospect and give May/Berrios a secure spot in the rotation. It isn't the most desirable situation, but standing pat at the deadline and rolling into next season with basically the same starting staff is even worse IMO. Judging by Antony's comments regarding Santana it doesn't sound like he is going anywhere. I honestly am not sure if the Twins just don't want to move him but are afraid to admit it and face some backlash, or they're actually delusional enough to think he's worth a top prospect.
  3. I'm not going to lose my mind if Santana sticks around and I didn't think Gibson would be dealt. I will say though, with the exception of Milone, all these starters are coming back next season. Will the Twins finally remove Nolasco from the rotation? Will May finally start some games? What are they doing with Hughes? Berrios should be a lock along with Duffey and Gibson. If the correct decisions are made and the starting rotation reflects the future of the team rather than who on the team is owed the most money, I'm fine with holding onto Santana and/or Gibson. If we're subjected to another season of below average veterans pitching with a longer leash than they should have, and blocking younger players then sadly I would have to say I'm on the "trade them for what you can get," side. Santana might not bring a ton back, but his value definitely isn't declining right now and most importantly, moving him frees up a rotation spot. Gibson has been up and down as usual but he's younger and much cheaper than Santana. It isn't an ideal scenario, but if you don't have confidence in the Twins to clear the "logjam," (can the worst pitching staff in baseball really have a "logjam?") in the rotation, then the position of trading Santana or Gibson makes complete sense. They may not receive a haul in return, but a spot opens up for a guy like Trevor May, and there is value in that.
  4. If they are I hope Nolasco gets the same treatment...we know he needs all the help he can get...
  5. Anybody else notice how generous the strike zone seems to be for Price?
  6. I agree that roster construction has been an issue. I also agree with the sentiment that it's a collection of moves and not one individual decision; this seems to be the board consensus. If it's unfair to view the Park contract in isolation because of the moves leading up to it and following it, why is it suddenly fair to criticize it in isolation? He's signed for 4 years at 3 million per year, that isn't exactly big money. The Twins have cut bait with much more money than that already this season. I believe those cuts were listed earlier in the thread as well. Nicksiviking killed it when talking about the posting fee so I won't repeat what he said (pg. 4?) It's disappointing that Park is in AAA right now, but his contract isn't hampering this club at all. If he can't hack it in MLB he can spend his 4 years in MiLB and at 3 million a year nobody should be up in arms. Sano may eventually be just a DH but the Twins aren't ready to relegate a 23 to that position this early and I can't say I disagree with that line of thinking. Vargas wasn't anything to write home about last season and ABW is striking out in almost 50% of his PAs at AAA so I can't blame the team for taking a chance on a guy with Park's potential. The jury is still very much out on Park's future. TR made some very questionable decisions, I just don't think this was one of them.
  7. The Twins were in 2 very different places when Ryan and Smith took over so I'm not sure overall record is a fair assessment of their tenure. I believe he was talking about the slew of terrible trades/baseball decisions Smith made during his time as GM. Whether or not he had people in his ear, the final decision was his and he ultimately had to bear responsibility. His time was totally negative, the Twins signed and drafted most of the young talent we're seeing right now under Smith's watch. Acquiring talent wasn't an issue for him, the problem was assessing the value of it and holding onto it.
  8. I think there is quite a bit of damage that could be done by Antony if he decides to start shipping off prospects/ young cost controlled players who are supposed to be part of the future.
  9. This is the real question. TR was set to go, but the timing of the move raises a lot of questions. The importance of this trade deadline in particular makes me a bit anxious knowing Antony is the one calling the shots.
  10. Honestly I hope you're right, but never underestimate the "Twins Way."
  11. Fair point about not knowing exactly how Antony will operate. I just view it as a typical Twins move, which is keeping the status quo and going with the comfortable option. I also kind of nervous to see how the trade deadline plays out now. Maybe it's an old wound from the Bill Smith era, but if Antony starts cleaning out the prospects acquired over the past few years I'm fairly certain I'll pick up my pitchfork and lead the mob.
  12. If Antony stays as GM after the season is over nothing really changes...
  13. The futures game invite isn't a guarantee of MLB success but it was hard to watch him throw and not feel a twinge of anger. I think the last 2 sentences perfectly sum up a good number of the decisions made the past few years.
  14. Its the passing of the torch. Punto to Butera, and now we have D-man. It just wouldn't be a Twins 25 man roster otherwise....
  15. You guys c'mon he's just a below average utility player. It isn't like he has been penciled in the starting lineup 6 of the last 7 games. Oh wait....
  16. Good thing Dan the man is in LF tonight and not that Rosario bum...
  17. I don't have a problem with Plouffe being traded, and I certainly don't think he's a "must-keep." At some point he is going to moved but I don't think it makes sense to give him up for essentially nothing during the offseason when you have an opportunity to drive his value up during the 1st half of this season. Losing Arcia wasn't a good move, but they didn't DFA him just because Plouffe was at 3B. There were a lot of moves and decisions that contributed to Arcia being shown the door. I agree, roster construction is important. I definitely don't want the prospects coming through to be blocked. I also don't want to see the team throw away talent and receive nothing in return. That was one of the main issues with the Arcia move. The crunch for half a season isn't ideal but I accept it as an attempt to get back everything they can for talent they've developed.
  18. Nobody was giving up anything for Plouffe in the offseason. It was the smart decision to get half a season of production and hope his value increases by the trade deadline when teams are dealing with injury and/or looking to make moves. It hasn't all worked out, but hindsight is 20/20 and I think the logic behind the move was solid. The worst case scenario is that they trade him now for the same type of marginal prospect they would've received in the offseason.
  19. So clearly you didn't read through the thread or you would've found the answer to your question. Idk why it is so difficult for YOU to realize the nuances of that play. As for your last point, if he's 3 steps off the bag why could he not just go back? "Not sure what you don't understand about that." See I can do it too....
  20. Until now I didn't but thanks for the clarification....Like I said the player has discretion. You freeze on a line drive, if the ball is hit sharply to 3B or SS, or if the pitcher fields it. We learned that in LL and it carried all the way through college...
  21. IF in...sharply hit ground ball right to the SS...even if he had a green light to go he has react to the play in front of him. Its like blaming a coach for a player getting picked off 1B. Sure he may have had the green light to steal but you have to know the situation.
  22. WTH was he doing?....If the past is any indication Molitor is going to send him down immediately following this game...see ya in another month Eddie.
  23. I think the question now is whether Molitor's favorite player starts to eat into the playing time of Escobar (when healthy). If he's done in the OF (jesus I hope so) the Twins now have 2 utility IF guys. Nunez is having a career year and is going to get consistent playing time so does Molitor finally sit Santana or are we doomed to watch him leech playing time from Escobar.
  24. Nice "stolen," base there by Dantana
  25. I agree, for an average team the move probably isn't viewed as being that aggressive. Compared to the trash the Twins have been drudging in the past few decades though, it is an aggressive move for this club. Even baby steps, if oriented in the correct direction count right? It's the more optimistic view (which I'm usually not a part of) but like I said 3 million a year isn't much of anything and they can bury him at AAA if it never works out.
