  1. See, that kissing up to the mods thing DOES work.
  2. Are you sure that wasn't Chief back when he was Airman Basic?
  3. He's on pace to throw 171 pitches (or should this go on the Fun With Numbers thread?)
  4. Is it bad that I saw that and my first thought was Willie Banks, not money (or Ernie) ?
  5. Where's the challenge in that? His way sounds a lot more fun.
  6. Now with Cy Pelfrey on the mound, that should be all we need, right?
  7. And the longer answer has words that can't be printed on a family site.
  8. Not sure exactly what it means, but I think it's supposed to be good.
  9. When they were 1-6 it was too early to write them off, but we did it anyway. It's probably too early to take them seriously now, too, but... They have played well. Bad teams can have stretches when they play well, but this does feel bit different. This isn't the result of a bunch of guys playing way over their heads. For every unsustainable positive there is at least one player playing below expectations who could improve. I really have no idea what to expect, so 143-13 here we come (until proven otherwise.)
  10. It's good to see him get another chance. MiLB numbers indicate he ought to be able to hit, given time, but at his age time is always a big factor. I hope he sticks around for a while this time.
  11. I counted 10 too, but it wasn't easy.
  12. Need to rename it Episode .191 and give a shout-out to Tim Laudner. (Maybe you did the 2nd part - I can't listen to the podcast until I get home from work.)
  13. Better than last year's full puke mode.
  14. Yep. See previous post for my full mea culpa
  15. Disregard. I'm kind of embarrassed by who I was mixing his record up with because it was so far off. I recently looked up another former Twins manager, was surprised at how much he had bounced around, then slept some (but not enough) and forgot some and part of his record became part of Gardy's. Gardenhire. Gardner. Easy mistake, right? I feel even more stupid about it because Billy Gardner Jr. was an acquaintance / friend of a friend of mine. I umpired a couple of games with him in the mid 80's and he joined us on one of our road trips to Yankee Stadium around that time frame.
  16. I had read this on Gleeman's site, but I had forgotten about it: Ron Gardenhire is officially looking for another managing gig. He hired an agent for the first time in two decades and is said to be "willing to consider virtually any position." It hasn't been a year yet, but I guess that's enough to dismiss my thought that Gardy might decide he would rather spend his time fishing and playing with grandkids.
  17. I like the time machine reference, although I'm on record as saying the health and new pitch means this could be sustainable. I still think the most likely explanation is the fairy godmother, and when midnight strikes (soon; yesterday might have been the first chime) he will turn back into a pumpkin. (Plus, nobody can make times machines with DeLorean out of business.)
  18. They were wearing White Sox jerseys - I probably would have hit them, too.
  19. I guess the key question for him is how fast baseball has really changed and whether or not some job will come open with an old-school GM/organization. A lot of times it's also a question of who you know. Gardy was locked in with the Twins for a long time, but he did bounce around quite a bit before that. It would be interesting to know how many of his old friends are in front office jobs now. Will he have to go the bench coach route to get back? Will he sit out a year and say "I thought I'd miss it, but I don't."
  20. I think Gardy's reputation around the league is better than his reputation around here, and I think a lot of that is due to losing fatigue. I think most teams will remember the success he had more than the losing because they weren't suffering through it like we were. I don't think too many doubted he would get another chance.
  21. I'm not sure that's a good comp. If your best hammer guy on the crew hurts his elbow there's another one available that's 99% as good for the same price, with maybe a week of development time needed.
  22. They have both been bad at the plate, but we chalk that up to SSS. We have a larger sample size (several years worth) of Santana struggling to make routine plays at SS. Also, Escobar's struggles at the plate might be due in part to inconsistent ABs and being jerked all over the place in the field. Escobar was about average both with the bat and in the field, and it wasn't a huge surprise. Santana's defense at SS has been pretty bad, and that hasn't been a huge surprise, either.
  23. There's a big error in the third sentence - p-r-o-b-a-b-l-y. </GrammarNazi>
  24. That makes sense. it would explain Duensing's injury, too.
