  1. Even if he's on a fast track, he's too far away for me to want him to be next.
  2. The only thing better than the Twins winning 13-2 is listening to Hawk while they are doing it. He's as annoying as can be when they are winning, or even when the game is close, but it's fun to hear his tone when they are getting blown out.
  3. The song covered it: Bob: ... I think there’s something wrong with your logic, Larry... Larry: Well Bob, the lady at the zoo said it, and who am I to tell her that she’s wrong? If there’s a tail, it’s a monkey. No tail; ape. It’s easy! Bob: But Larry... a kite has a tail! Larry: Then it’s a monkey Bob: A comet has a tail! Larry: It’s a monkey Bob: A bubble doesn’t have a... Larry: Then it’s not a monkey, If it doesn’t have a tail It’s not a monkey... Bob: It’s an ape? Larry: Exactly! I knew you’d catch on! Bob: Larry, we might need to talk about this. I don’t think the lady at the zoo meant...
  4. If it doesn't have a tail it's not a monkey, it's an ape. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--szrOHtR6U (Since you were talking about inane posts)
  5. No mention of throwing in Duensing, so it's hard to tell.
  6. The Twins stuck with Santana in 2000 mainly because he was a Rule 5 guy and they wanted to keep him. If they could have optioned him, I'm sure they would have. I didn't go back and review the numbers, but there's not much in common style-wise. Meyer is 6'9" (vs. 6'0"), is right-handed, throws much harder than Santana did, and has a slider as his #2 pitch. (Santana had possibly the best change-up of all time, although I'm not sure if he learned it before or after 2000.) It's not a very good comp. That said, the long-relief role can be useful for pitchers of different styles, and it can be used effectively as an evaluation tool and, hopefully, as a springboard to bigger things.
  7. I don't think anyone wants the goal to be for him to become a long reliever, but those innings can be valuable for development. Long relievers still face major league hitters, and someone has to throw those innings. It might as well be someone you are preparing for a bigger role.
  8. I'm not sure if I was one of the ones that jumped on you at the time, but allow me to pile on now. I can't see a significant resurgence happening as long as the Twins are paying an aging 1B $23M/yr to hit .261/.324/.357./.681 (and dropping) in the three hole. It is vital to have Mauer stop being that guy and be more like his old self instead, unless we want to postpone the resurgence until 2018. At the time he got the contract, I recognized the importance of resigning him, but the dollar amount surprised and concerned me. They paid for 8 years of the 2009 Joe Mauer when even at the time that year looked like an aberration. That said, I would have been fine with 8 years/$150M, and that would have made very little difference in the current situation. Paying an aging 1B $18.75M/yr to hit .261/.324/.357./.681 doesn't really give more flexibility than paying him $23M.
  9. The version I heard involved John Kerry after the 2004 election, but it definitely works for Celine Dion as well. Plus it doesn't get half (or more) the readership here mad by talking politics.
  10. I didn't go back and check, but hasn't he had an adjustment period at previous levels? I know he did when he first signed and he did at AA. Was there any level that he tore up right off the bat? If he struggles at first, we need to be patient.
  11. I've been wondering if maybe the switch from catcher has affected him. As a catcher, you see and track far more live pitches than anyone else on the field, although obviously with a different intent.
  12. There is very little evidence that I have seen that clutch performance (specifically performance w/RISP) is a skill. If it was, people would tend to remain clutch performers over a period of time, that their stats with RISP would be consistently higher than their overall stats year after year. Instead, we find the opposite. If you take the top 10% and bottom 10% clutch performers from one year and graph their clutch performance the following year, the two graphs would probably be similar. The majority in each group would have RISP performance about equal to their overall performance, some would be above, and some would be below.
  13. She was probably picturing all the riff-raff you hang out with online showing up at the house. Imagine your insurance rates after one of the old folks throws out his back on the water slide. (Trying to be nice by not mentioning Chief by name there.)
  14. Going for the cycle and four straight balls. It's hard to get Torii to not swing at four pitches in a row in normal circumstances.
  15. I was going to say that, but I didn't think I had kissed up to the mods enough yet.
  16. Teamwork is overrated (just like RBI and "mentoring younger players.")
  17. Pelfrey's pitches by inning: 19-19-21 Pelfrey's runs by inning: 0-0-2 Evidence indicates he needs to keep it right at 19 pitches
  18. See, that kissing up to the mods thing DOES work.
  19. Are you sure that wasn't Chief back when he was Airman Basic?
  20. He's on pace to throw 171 pitches (or should this go on the Fun With Numbers thread?)
  21. Is it bad that I saw that and my first thought was Willie Banks, not money (or Ernie) ?
  22. Where's the challenge in that? His way sounds a lot more fun.
  23. Now with Cy Pelfrey on the mound, that should be all we need, right?
