  1. Even if he starts to play his age, it will still be fun to get to the stadium early to watch BP.
  2. Looking forward to the Rule V draft ... ... being over so I can get my prospect handbook!
  3. It's harder to keep a guy with a big negative split against RHP because there are so many more RHP than LHP.
  4. That was following a minor-league career that gave little hint that he could be that good.
  5. A team can win with a lineup with a couple of stars and a bunch of other guys who don't suck. Finding the stars is the hard part; patching the holes once you have the stars is easier. Buxton still looks like the best candidate for 2019 to me (although the team has $60M or so to make that change.)
  6. There goes my plan. I guess it's on to plan B - I need to start living in my van No reason in particular, but which river would that be?
  7. I just re-read this and thought I better clarify. I hope we're still joking, not that he's still the free agent that will put us over the top this year.
  8. I thought the mention of Mark DeRosa in another article was just a revival of the old Mark DeRosa jokes here. (He was going to be the free agent signing to put us over the top for about 5 years.) I still hope that's the case.
  9. I definitely agree on Ozzie Guillen. I wasn't thrilled with the Molitor hiring back then, but I didn't hate it. I didn't really care about SB's, but I prefer to not give outs away.
  10. It sounds easy until you have to do it. That shows how slim the margins are at that level - Great --> Historic = 1 hit every two weeks. It's similar at other points on the curve as well - AAA --> The Show = 1 hit every two weeks; AAAA shuffle --> solid MLB = 1 hit every two weeks... It's obviously a bit simplistic and the value could show up other ways (one extra play in the OF every two weeks), but we are talking about the game of the extra 2%.
  11. Some things never change.
  12. Maybe instead of getting of getting full credit for DL time, they could work out a formula based on total time accumulated and time credited over the past MLB year. Maybe the initial 10-day period counts, then additional time counts at the percentage of the higher of the time spent on the MLB roster the past year or the total time/3 service years IIRC, the service year isn't quite a full year, but it's ridiculously close (171/183 days?). I'd like to see something closer to 120 in a single year or 150 over any combo of years that didn't reach that threshold. I haven't given it a great deal of thought or played around with the math to figure out loopholes. Maybe any two consecutive years that add up to 270 count as two years (to be fair to the guy who was on the roster for 100 + 180 - that might discourage holding off calling a guy up until there are 119 days left.
  13. The bigger problem I have is the fact that the minor league players are bound by the terms of the CBA, yet are not eligible to be members of the union. They just have to trust the MLBPA to look out for their interests, and it's definitely not a priority.
  14. I forgot how it went down - did they dump us or did we dump them? No complaints about where we ended up (except having an ear of corn in the logo is pretty lame, and I make sure to remind my Nebraska friends of that fact regularly.)
  15. Yep. I know we have been tanking since Aug 1, but trying to do it all in one game isn't very helpful.
  16. Hopefully it was along the lines of "So that's how it's done."
  17. Wow, I misinterpreted that the first time read it. (And we were concerned about Buxton's service time...)
  18. The WPA on my wife's decision was a bit higher - after going to last night's game and staying the night*, she said "It's going to be too hot and muggy today." Let's just go out to lunch, do some shopping, and head back home." (The kids voted with her, 4-0.) She was enjoying the disaster on the radio a bit too much on the trip home. * - Edit: in the Arlington area, not hiding out in the stadium overnight. Everyone knew that, but someone would get intentionally confused and mess with me. I know I would if someone else wrote that
  19. I agree, it would be pretty foolish to wait until it's 13-2 to bring the real pitchers out.
  20. I saw him pitch tonight - no argument here. Just kidding. I can't imagine the nerves, especially when things start to go bad.
  21. He would have been in the top half of the bullpen on the 87 Twins. Of course, they might have made him a starter and let him battle Straker for the #3 spot. I know - it was a different era and that team was among the worst championship teams of all time. (They were definitely built for a 7-game series, not a 162 game season.)
