  1. It seems to me that there were quite a few that were disappointed - I know I was. I wasn't critical of the move, just disappointed it didn't work out because the knuckleball is a fun pitch to watch. I don't think it's fair to criticize Anderson for failing to help him succeed when the book on developing knuckleballers is very thin. I remember at the time someone did some analysis on the movement on his pitches using pitch f/x data and concluded that there might not have been enough movement to consistently fool MLB hitters. I'm sure there were plenty of caveats in the article about limited data for comparison, but at least it showed there were definitely reasonable people who had doubts about his ability to make it. I didn't have time to track down that article, but if anyone remembers it and has a link it would be interesting to re-read it.
  2. I'm not sure if I can hold my breath for 2 more outs, but I feel like I have to.
  3. Nice inning by Burton. Hopefully we can get to Capps with at least this three-run lead. It won't feel safe, but it will feel as close to safe as we can hope for.
  4. First no-hitter in Mets history (8020 games is the number I saw.) He threw 134 pitches, 8 K's, 5 BB's. He's still one of my all-time favorite Twins, although understand and agree with the rational for trading him. Congrats Johan
  5. 2010. That seems like what he can do physically post-TJ if he holds it together mentally.
  6. Was it 5 walks and 1 K? He will have to find a way to reverse that or he will be 1-2 bad starts from AAA for the rest of his MLB career. I think the best case is he keeps the damage to a minimum until we find something better. If things continue as they have for the first part of the season, that could be a while. I'm hoping (irrationally) for a little winning streak to at least remove some of the gloom from the season. Actually, I'm still hoping, Liriano finally finds it, Pavano eats innings and is marginally more effective, Diamond and Walters hold it together, the lineup starts hitting as it should, and an easier schedule gets us to .500 by the end of June. This guy has the math worked out for it: http://star.psy.ohio-state.edu/coglab/Pictures/miracle.gif
  7. I would decline the option but try to bring him back, but I doubt that will get it done. I get the feeling he isn't too happy with Twins mgmt right now and is likely to get a better offer elsewhere. My guess is the Twins under-value a healthy Baker and are too risk-averse to try to keep him.
  8. If you had told me that that Capps would covert 90% of his save opportunities through May, I would have said it's possible due to small sample size, but it's still not worth the $4M or so we're paying him plus the picks we could have had if he left. The sample size is smaller than I would have guessed or hoped.
  9. Bill James had some interesting analysis of the "more strategy" claim. While there were more bunts and more pinch-hitters used in the NL, the variation in numbers between the teams was far greater. This is paraphrase of his conclusion, since I don't have the book in front of me: "If there is strategy in the act of bunting or in the act of using a pinch-hitter, then there is more strategy in the NL. If the strategy is in the decision whether or not to bunt or use a pinch-hitter, then there is far more strategy in the AL." His point is that most of the moves in the NL are automatic, leaving very little flexibility for actual strategic decisions. Like Drew Butera? (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)
  10. Sounds good, but who would the closer be? You can't have a decent team without a Proven CloserTM
  11. I thought he meant 12 new pitchers (dumping all 12 that we have) but I see now that your interpretation was probably corect.
  12. Maybe he should try NFL QB. Even Brady can't throw and catch - ask Gisele.
  13. Very nice. I was going to say Capps, but I was afraid someone might think I was serious.
  14. He might crack the top 5, but no guarantees
  15. Anything to get him out of the broadcast booth.
  16. "...see if there's a low level prospect the Nationals might be interested in." After the Ramos trade, that scares me. I can picture the answer: "There are a couple of guys way down in Low-A; I think their names are Sano and Rosario..."
  17. I agree with your line-up with a couple of omments: 1. Plouffe has earned a VERY short leash. 2. I prefer Willingham in RF and Revere in LF. When Willingham said he wasn't comfortable out there, I would have told him to bring his recliner because he was going to be there for the next three years and might as well get comfortable.
  18. Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! (I'm no Gameday too, but I'm glad to help where I can.)
  19. They traded him for less than nothing
  20. Repko, Harris, Tolber, Ford,...
  21. Should I adopt Ryan Mills next?
  22. They didn't grab any "proven closers" off the waiver wire this past winter that we can ask for?
  23. .355/.443/.592 in a small sample size led to some unrealistic expectations. .205/.266/.301 in an equally small sample has caused some angst that might be more justified. The track record prior to these samples indicated a player who would struggle to hit enough to play 1B. While his current stats are well below what he should be able to do, a trip to Rochester might help him regroup.
  24. We need to get AshburyJohn over here from that other thread so we debate whether this is satire or sarcasm. (I vote satire.)
  25. Maybe - if I remember right, many teams looked at him as a better prospect as a pitcher prior to the draft, but he preferred OF. I think he's going to make it as a hitter.
