  1. Don't be so quick - Manship will probably be dropped from the 40-man because of Manship, not Boras.
  2. They might consider a discount for good first year teachers. (Sorry - I couldn't resist)
  3. Really? Who? I can understand someone saying that it is an imprecise measure and that there are better available, but it still is a good indicator of overall performance, especially for starting pitchers. Now W-L is another story...
  4. I don't think "entertaining" is the word I would use for Hawk. / ...He's easily the worst announcer in baseball. I agree - he's an illiterate, inarticulate jerk. John Sterling gets a dishonorable mention for his "Yankees win. Theeeeeee Yankees win", mainly because it reminds me of Harrelson's ""You can put it on the board! Yes!" But he's nowhere near the Hawk range, except for that one call. (Hopefully he gets to choke on it again tonight.)
  5. My general rule is when in doubt, play under protest. Just stop arguing and say "I think you got that rule wrong and w'd like to play under potest." Then go play and sort it out later. If you're wrong, the protest is denied. If you win, the protest is ignored. If you lose and you're right, they fix the call and resume from that point. In this game the Twins were down 8-0, so they might not have wanted to play the rest of that game twice.
  6. I'll take Rhetorical Questions for $200, Alex, and try "who is Denard Span?" The $1000 question is who can the 2012 Twins get for Denard Span with comparable value to 1983 Mike Smithson and John Butcher.
  7. Also how about Showalter giving the rookie a green light on 3-0? Was it a green light or was it a "What the heck are you doing / way to go / that will still cost you $500" moment?
  8. Deduno reminds me of Scott Erickson. His best pitch is a fastball that has so much movement that he doesn't know where it's going. Erickson put it all together fairly early and was dominant for 2/3 of a season. Then he hurt his elbow and was never the same again. I'm hoping that last night's game was Deduno figuring something out and putting it all together and it's the beginning of sustainable success for him (as opposed to the 5 K 6BB success he has been having.) And I hope he doesn't hurt his elbow.
  9. I still think he can be very good. I might even pay more than that (incentives up to his option salary and a trigger for a 2nd year) :Pass No way I think he will have better options, and I certainly wouldn't arm-wrestle anyone to get him I think he's done. Even if he looks healthy, I'd be cautious. : I don't dislike Capps. I just don't like him nearly as much as the Twins management did (just like Punto). If he would take 7th inning money and a 7th inning role, great. : If we could get him for a decent price, yes. I think he has too much name recognition and still has too much perceived potential to be that cheap. I liked him when we had him and wish we had signed him plus Crain instead of Capps. I got the impression he wasn't terribly popular in the clubhouse and front office, but I'd rather have a jerk who can pitch. (And my impression might be wrong.) $3M is a little high and he will probably look for a contender If we sign him, he's plan A and Dozier becomes plan C. We're working on plan B. I'm not sure there is a point to that - just re-arranging deck chairs Too much vodka on that one. If we can get a decent SP for Span, I'd do this. He already proved he was.
  10. Zoilo Versalles took two seasons to go from .781 to .531; his OPS+ went from 115 to 51. I guess that's not quite at the same level. The MVP award just makes it seem worse, (Alyea's OPS+ went from 142 to 48 - he must have lost his HGH source in the off-season.)
  11. 60-102 If everyone stays healthy, my off-the-cuff projections are: 1. Diamond will regress some. We'll call his ERA 4.00 (I hope) 2. Hendriks will be good, but with some growing pains. I'd say he's equal to Diamond next year and will be better long-term. 3. It's hard to know how far along Gibson's injury might have set back his development. He wasn't great at AA or AAA before the injury, so my guess is he starts the season in the minors. If he doesn't, it will probably be a bumpy ride. I'll peg his ERA at 5.50, with the upside being what he did in AA in 2010 and the downside being really bad short term, Phil Humber long term 4. I'm glad De Vries got to go to the ball, but the chariot is overdue at the pumpkin patch. 6.00+ 5. Walters is not a kid, was not good, and has given little reason to believe he will be good. 6.00+
  12. His luck actually lasted for two seasons - his 08 and 09 seasons are just about identical. (ERAs within .02, WHIP within .06, So/9 dropped .2, BB/9 was the same, W-L identical - few people have two seasons in a row that are that similar.) The problem is there were warning signs the whole time. The league eventually figures out guys that don't miss bats. Sometimes a young pitcher will start with a low SO/9 and then take a leap forward in the second year (Radke). Blackburn started too low and went (slightly) lower. Even at his peak, he was a #4 type starter, and those are the kind of guys you find after you build the core of the team. They aren't the guys you lock up as the core.
  13. I was kind of ticked last night and I was hoping the Twins would use up their whole bullpen hitting one batter per inning. Then when the benches cleared (and they probably would have) make sure someone went after Oswalt. Maybe that's why Waldrop got called up - so we have enough arms to do it tonight.
  14. Free MLB TV 10-day trial: http://mlb.mlb.com/sponsors/lexus/y2012/free_trial/index.jsp If for some reason it doesn't work for you, I apologize in advance. It worked for me, although I should have waited until after the Texas series - it's in my local broadcast area.
  15. In other words, he's out for the season. He is out for the year. They aren't going to rush him back. They have to wait the required 14 days before they can put him on the DL. (It might only be 6 days for the minors.)
  16. If you are a human being [i am] who believes in evolution... [i'm not, but I will limit my comment to areas where I would agree with those who do] Repetition, physical ability and love for the game are not only passed onto the next generation by word of mouth, but also by the ability to reproduce and implant their genetic mark, a mark that contains the imprint of baseball. Acquired characteristics such as baseball skills are not passed along genetically. (However, apparently Lamarckism is making a bit of a comeback, although for now it's tentative/questionable (at best) and limited to starvation situations and certain experiments with single-cell life forms.) I would say that the US has better players than Australia because there are more people who play and there are far more opportunities to play against high-level competition. The coaching is better, or, rather, better coaching is available if you look for it. My son is a much better athlete than I ever was, but I was a better baseball player. When he was nine we moved to Belgium and then to Germany, so he didn't see decent competion until he was a junior in high school. There is no substitute for repetions and good competition.
  17. The Blackburn of old had plenty of red flags that indicate that this is the real thing and that was an illusion. He's a right-handed Allan Anderson, except not quite as good. After looking at the stats, Anderson wasn't as bad as I remembered when he bottomed out. Even when he was good, those SO/9 rates were amazing - 3.7 and 3.2. A batting tee has higher rates.
  18. Couldn't disagree more. The thing I hate most about football is how owners screw the players over their contracts. The players get hurt or has a down year, then the contract doesn't matter, the player is cut. But if they exceed the contract and want a raise, all of sudden owners act like the player is a greedy **** for wanting his value. I don't have a problem with either system. Both sides know the rules going in. That's why FB contracts often have huge signing bonuses (and why reports of NFL contracts usually mention total $$ and guaranteed $$.)
  19. On the main ESPN page right now (with current stats): Which perfect game this season was the most impressive? 47% Felix Hernandez: 12 strikeouts, 115 pitches vs. Rays 18% Phil Humber: 9 strikeouts, 96 pitches vs. Mariners 36% Matt Cain: 14 strikeouts, 125 pitches vs. Astros I had to vote for Humber because, well, it was PHIL HUMBER who did it. The other two guys were probably a few breaks away from doing it at least a couple of times already, but Phil Humber??
  20. The problem is the teams know that he is a 33 year old coming off a career year and they factor that into how they value him. Jim Bowden, Omar Minaya, and Bill Smith aren't GMs anymore - the league has gotten smarter.
  21. I'm pretty sure the O's know that Willingham is 33 and has a history of injuries. I think we have a better chance of building a time machine, traveling to the future to find out who will be good, then coming back and trading for them. Bundy is as not available as they come. If you can make a working flux capacitor, I'll buy the DeLorean.

I believe there is a study showing that teenagers who have TJ and then start pitching a lot of innings again have a high injury recurrence rate. Nothing for professional pitchers in their 20's yet. I know there were concerns that giving him a 15 day DL stint and then throwing him back into the rotation without working him back up to it would be more harmful than just racking up the innings. They seem pretty convinced that shutting him down is the only way to go. I still think that when you have a chance to win it all, you do what you can to do it. You don't hold back for another opportunity because it might not come.
  23. It wasn't racist until you thought it was and said it anyway.
  24. He has 1,500 posts. He has two comments that are off the deep end. I think we can live with that ratio.
  25. New Britain to Groton to Cooperstown? Definitely not concerned with a direct route. I'm from that area - a town called Niantic, which is a reasonably short drive from Groton. (My father worked in Groton for about 35 years.) While living there I would never have thought of New Britain to Groton as a short detour - that was an hour each way, and 2 hours to Boston or to New York were the outer edges of the world there. Now that I live in Oklahoma, my perspective has changed a bit. A 2 hour trip to (each way) to OKC is routine, and four hours to Dallas is fairly common. But when I read your route, I fell back into the old, familiar perspective on distance for a minute. There is a NY-P team in Norwich CT - I just checked the schedule and saw they are on their All-Star break. The game is tomorrow "hosted by the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio." Are you by any chance headed that way? This is the first entry on your trip that I have caught - I'll get caught up on the rest tomorrow. Good stuff. P.S. - If you're out that way again, Mystic Seaport is worth a day.
