  1. Yup, pretty much. I think it's a fad that will die. But I wonder ... who the glory hogs are in this? Are the players themselves making a 'big deal' out of this, or the teams and the sport? A player's retirement getting played up by a marketing department ... not sure that's on the player. But of course, the player could say to management ... 'This is my last season, but don't announce it.'
  2. Um ... you only give to receive? Then yes, by all means, spend on yourself whatever you would've spent on others. If what you are trying to get at that maybe some of the commercialism bothers you, and you are buying more 'stuff,' and it doesn't feel sincere enough for you, then try making donations to various organizations in the name of the persons you would ordinarily buy 'stuff' for. Or instead of buying something, make something for everyone on your list.
  3. You know, if you're bored with the topic, you could choose to ignore it instead of respond to it.
  4. If it doesn't have peanut butter in it, yuck. Kidding. I like tofu ... when it's prepared well ... but I don't think I'd put it in mousse. I mean, how do you do that? Instead of egg yolks? What???? Why the need to do that? Unless you are trying to make a vegan mousse, and then you'd have to find a substitute for the cream, too. And then, well, maybe you make your chocolate mousse with tofu and carob? Don't invite me over to your house for dessert. Or better yet, let me bring the dessert.
  5. I think it's fine to give your hometown fans some lead time. But taking it on the road? No. Unless you are an absolute god to the sport ... and that's not Jeter, Mo Rivera or Big Papi. Yes, some of these teams and players have fans around the country. So what. If you are that big of a fan, find a way to get to Mecca to see your hero.
  6. Stop the name calling. That is not at all productive nor what this article strives to do.
  7. Thank you, Peanuts. I have enjoyed your writing over the years here at TD. This piece is one of the best things I think I have read here. Thank you.
  8. Yeah ... when I read that it's a day ... I'm like ... What!? One day!? And then sad that it even needs to be a day at all.
  9. This, yes. That's exactly what I think. Not only does it make it easier to ignore, but it makes it more difficult to combat. Have attitudes really changed? Maybe ... or maybe they are just altered. I know it takes time, but ... the distrust out there is huge.
  10. The system here is just so ... corrupt ... from the top on down.
  11. Maybe I should clarify what I meant. It's not the same, but I don't think it's less. Okay, marginally, yes. But not sweepingly less. IMO. But I think your take on things is very accurate, but for me, I don't think it's 'less enough' to be considered 'less.' Maybe it's a matter of semantics or degrees or ... I don't know. But it really doesn't seem that much 'less.' Just different.
  12. I disagree that it's less a problem than it used to be.
  13. Meanwhile, in Chicago ... Sigh.
  14. I think this would be a HORRIBLE idea. I'd rather see a truly LEGITIMATE AND COMPETENT 3rd party candidate, who challenges because he/she has something real and different to offer other than the 2-party, partisan status quo, and not one just with populist appeal from the fearful and stupid. Sorry, but that's where Trump's appeal lies. And, frankly, Trump would siphon off more from the Republican side anyway; it wouldn't really be a 3rd party, just a disgruntled candidate who didn't get his party's endorsement.
  15. Every day is sushi/sashimi day as far as I'm concerned.
  16. I know people who do and have. (Not me, as I don't like sardines. If I liked them, I'm sure I'd have tried them.)
  17. My colleague eats sardines. No comment. But if this were national pickled herring day, I'd be all over that action.
  18. Belgium and France ... Mmmmmmm ..... best combo for food .... Bread, cheese, pastries, frites, beer, chocolate. I think I hit all the food groups with that combo.
  19. Yum, hmm, meh ... in that order. Cashews and pecans ... favorite nuts. Espresso ... occasionally ... it makes me too hyper, though. If it's really good, it's good. But that means most chains would be not good. (Yes, I'm looking at you, Starbucks.) I don't mind cranberry juice ... as long as it's used as a mixer and has alcohol in it. And cranberry-orange bread is okay. But otherwise, I can leave it alone.
  20. For me it was the combo of custard and vegetables. Ptewy!
  21. It's quiet around here today. I blame that damn football game. That I will likely keep tabs on the score.
  22. No, I think he's just testing the rest of us.
  23. This moderator agrees with that owner.
  24. If you don't like it after you've tried it, all I can say is you probably did it wrong.
