  1. Again I'll ask ... why do you think this? I'm seriously asking ... why do you think this is stupid?
  2. Nothing at all. But that's not what was being said. What was being said was he needed to stop feeding at the buffet trough and he needed to stop being lazy and he needed to stop just expecting things to happen. Those types of character issues questions are out of bounds, because those are all speculative and disrespectful and, frankly, not helpful in finding solutions. But saying needs to refocus and figure it out and be in better condition ... absolutely. And that's what he's in Fort Myers to do. Maybe there are other issues at hand with his level of discipline, both in diet and workouts, that do feed into what he needs to change (no pun intended with the word 'feed') ... but I think those can be addressed without outright being disrespectful by saying things that I mentioned above without painting the most negative picture of his personal character.
  3. She is still allowed to make choices in her life. And yes, this event has likely altered that. But did she have a particular talent and is no longer being allowed to pursue it by the general public? Is this such a crime, then, that punishment should be life long? (I'm seriously asking ... as I said above, I'm not defending anyone ... but asking.) What crime is next? That drunk driver killed someone I loved, and because I grieve forever for that person, so should that driver, who knew better but drove anyway?
  4. Thanks. I'll read it. Have to get to work for now ... and have already spent too much time here.
  5. But this is what I'm saying ... how would you react if you found out a neighbor or colleague or business associate was a registered sex offender. Can you honestly say that wouldn't change what you think about having to work with that person or live next door to some capacity? If someone started a campaign to remove this person from your neighborhood or from his employment or block doors to employment ... would you be on board with that? Okay, so baseball is 'too public' of a profession ... are you saying, then, that the general public, people that he doesn't know and don't know him (personally) get to have a say in how he lives the rest of his life? Again, not defending his actions, more posing a ... philosophical ... question ... so, his punishment then becomes we take away all his choices and opporutnities but for the narrow few we deem 'okay' for him to pursue? So he will, in essence, be punished for the rest of his life? While I get it .. the heinous nature of the crime has us all ... on edge ... but is that fair? Is this just a crime that carries a life-long sentence? Does he never a get a second chance at LIFE ... but only is allowed the life we, the general public, chooses for him? Forever, for as long as he lives? I think that's a dangerous precedence, personally.
  6. While I'm not trying to defend Heimlich here, if we want to talk about who is victimizing whom, then why isn't the person who broke this story part of this ongoing victimization? Was there any thought to what doing this might mean to this girl, or was the only thought given to outing Heimlich because he is a college baseball star and that would garner attention? And in what sector, what job could he possibly try for, where this won't be an issue for employers and/or colleagues? While I fully understand the heinous nature of the crime has many of us saying, 'Omg, no! Anywhere but here!' ... if everyone says that, then where? He's satisfied the terms of his punishment, is this how all offenders, of any crime, should be treated? You don't know what contrition he has or hasn't shown as I don't think he needs to prove that to me. Yeah, okay, it'd be nice to see him publicly remorseful, but I don't count and what I think doesn't count toward that, and shouldn't, imo. The general public shouldn't be allowed to tack on terms to his punishment. We have no idea what has/hasn't been said privately. Is he supposed to go through circus hoops every time this comes up? At what point does he get to move on to some degree? (I'd guess completely being able to move on will never happen for him because, well, yeah, but ... I still ask the question.) As I said above, I'm very conflicted. Part of me is saying, 'Yuck, no, go away! Ugh!' but part of me knows, well, he has to be given an opportunity somewhere if he's legally satisfied the terms of his punishment. Where is the line? It can't be never.
  7. By the way, I moved this to the Sports Bar because this really isn’t a ‘I think the Twins should sign him’ discussion. It’s more of a ‘second chances’ discussion about someone who happens to be a talented baseball player. At this point I really feel the baseball is the secondary discussion, not the primary discussion, so I moved the thread here.
  8. I don’t think this is a ‘the truth is in the middle’ situation, not one iota. It’s more of a case of ‘we don’t know what the whole truth is’ situation. I also don’t think this is a situation of ... well ... something that would be legal between adults. I don’t think a 4-6 year old is thinking in terms of sexual contact. And even in adults, unwanted contact is unwanted. If he did rape her, it’s rape no matter her age. It’s just quite a bit more heinous given the fact she was 6. This isn’t two teenagers fooling around and they got caught. Again, I don’t know the whole truth and I’m very conflicted about this young man.
  9. Play elsewhere? You don’t think people in other countries would react the same way we do regarding this issue? The internet makes the world a small place ... no way people simply wouldn’t know.
  10. What? You mean offering him the most money isn't enough? But we've heard that that's all it takes? Now I'm confused. You mean he wouldn't want to come here for other reasons, even if we did offer him the most money?
  11. Machado!
  12. Incredibles 2 - loved it! But I especially loved the score ... if you like movie scores, stay through all the end credits.
  13. Oh, I fully agree that one vet isn’t the same as another. And now we’re getting off topic here so let’s move on.
  14. Uh ... this isn't at all what I was saying and not at all what I was calling out van on.
  15. Wait a minute here. You’re faulting then for liking their veterans? I recall a different thread where you were chastising people for wanting to move on from veterans, ie Dozier. If you’re going to be critical at least be consistent and not opportunistic to suit your frustration.
  16. The game on Saturday is an afternoon game. If you’re looking for something to do that night, the Chicago Symohony is playing the soundtrack live to the movie Star Wars: A New Hope. (Yes, a shameless plug ... although I think tickets are harder to come by for the movie night with the orchestra than the game at Wrigley.)
  17. THIS is what to worry about, not if he is back on the team by a certain date or not.
  18. Okay, folks ... step up, one and all ... June is off the books, in terms of game thread starter volunteers. Plenty of open dates left for July ... and some series openers among them. So ... step up to plate and give it a go ... swing and a miss or grand slam, you won't be sorry you you gave it a go! Check here for availabe dates in July. Plenty to be had ... and it's okay to sign up for more than one! Just send a joint PM to BOTH me and Chief and we'll put you down ... in pen!
  19. As I said, I agree. I think it's both. I think that if that ruling hadn't come down as it did, they'd have served her. But yes, it's also certainly a symptom of our divisiveness. Personally, I don't understand refusing someone service on the grounds of religion. It's just not what my religion taught me growing up. Mine taught me to be kind and decent no matter who the other person was. Remember when Jesus hung out with the 'dregs' of society? Yeah, that's been forgotten. But in today's society, religion has become so warped by power and political gain the lessons of human decency are lost.
  20. Yeah ... I agree. However, that line is going to get more and more blurred and it started the minute it became okay for someone not to make a gay couple a cake because it went against their religion. While I get it, this is different, this is what is going to start happening more frequently ... from both sides. And honestly, I'm not so sure it's all that different. Wasn't this the owner/manager of the restaurant? Does he not have that same right to refuse service to a despicable human being on the grounds of religion? Personally, the religion I grew up in would say bake the cake and serve Huckabee, because it's the right thing to do in being a kind human being. 'Do unto others ...' and 'Judge not ...' and many other quotes I could give that say 'Be decent no matter what you think of the other person.' But ... again ... this ruling left the door wide open for this to happen. This country is in all kinds of crises, imo. And Mike, you've said many times that this is going to come down to some kind of revolution. I can't see any end but that at this point.
  21. Okay, a legitimate source. Not the Daily Wire.
  22. I probably missed it ... but did you provide a link to that 83% figure? Could you post it again? I'd like to read it.
  23. Obama and the Democratic party NEVER, EVER had a law or policy that intentionally, willfully and specifically separated families at the border. Period. In fact, during Obama's tenure as president, illegal immigration was trending downward. This CURRENT policy of separating families was introduced in late April and took effect in early May. This was policy set forth by Trump and by Sessions. And they were doing this to families who also presented themselves at the border LEGALLY. Trump has referred to these people, these human beings, in less so language. He has worked to dehumanize these people, referring to them as 'infestations' to make it easier for people like you to be so disregarding of their plight. And many families may never be reunited with their children again. What was done was done BY TRUMP and his administration.
  24. Pretty sure the House and the Senate have Republican majorities. If he's not getting bills passed it's not because of the Democrats, it's because of his own party. A minority party can't be obstructionist when they don't have enough votes to do so, unless in the Senate they somehow get and keep a fillibuster going, but those rules have changed so it's more difficult to do even that.
  25. This isn't new, but was doubled down on with Obama. This was the Newt Gingrich plan during the Clinton years. Not that Clinton is a favorite of mine, because he wasn't, but, this idea of blocking everything and anything they could because they hated the guy ... just not a new tactic. The new tactic was to try to undo absolutely everything Obama did, not because it was the best thing to do, or because they had something better to put in its place, but because the hate runs deep for the black man.
