  1. For Hughes, what was the perception of the Twins when you were on the Yankees and sweeping them from the playoffs? For Thielbar, what do you think about those new Saints ticket prices? ;-)
  2. Thanks for the good info! This is a little more detailed then the stuff I found at Fox but it is still effectively the same thing. 1 stint on the disabled list for a quad strain. A couple of Day to Day outages with knee and back soreness. The Arizona Central article had an interesting quote describing the injuries I agree with the premise Nick had in this article, I don't think we can count on him much if such minor stuff really changed his game that much.
  3. What was Kubel's injury last year. I googled "Kubel 2013 Injury" and all I found was a strained quad. Was there something serious that I did not find? I have a hard time thinking a muscle pull in April could really be an excuse for the season he had. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/player/jason-kubel/injuries/223755?q=jason-kubel
  4. Kubel had a .610 OPS, that 100 points lower and not what I would call close. Even in Kubel's limited time last year he was worth almost 2 less wins then Doumit so I view this as a clear step down. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2013&month=0&season1=2013&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=2113,2161
  5. http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/02/22/twinsights-matt-garza-turned-down-potential-56-million-offer-from-twins/ There are no specifics given to when the offer was given to Garza. Conversely, Angels sources and Garza are more forthcoming on their offer to him stating it was in in mid-december, about 6 weeks before he signed with the Brewers: http://brewersbeat.mlblogs.com/2014/02/17/garza-says-timing-of-angels-offer-led-him-to-brewers/ I think it is highly unlikely the Twins made this offer after they had signed Pelfrey, Nolasco, and Hughes. In my opinion it was at least before the Pelfrey signing and I would suspect it was in the November timeframe when they were working on Nolasco. I can't imagine they would clog up 4/5's of their rotation for the next 3 years and prevent any spots from being filled by our minor league guys. I will state that proof for either side on this issue is impossible because we have no definitive quotes.
  6. When was the money offered to Garza? Do we have proof that it was before Hughes, Nolasco, and Pelfrey signed? Maybe it is an old report and after he rejected it we moved on to sign the guys we signed.
  7. What should he have done differantly? Not filed a grievance and just accepted it?
  8. I like that perkins is here and that things have turned positive for his situation on this team but this article seems to imply that all the "conflict" issues were on his side and that he is some sort of head case. The Twins were not classy in some of the things they did to him early, specifically calling a minor league rehab assignment a demotion so they could pay him less money on service time. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/289102-glen-perkins-grievance-is-settled-but-his-future-in-minnesota-is-not
  9. I love how Rauch added some flair to the video with badass looks and tattoo display. I'd love for Mauer to have fun and just do something goofy like the HBK theme, to stay with the WWE references. [video=youtube;acD-AnO_rOA]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acD-AnO_rOA
  10. Shoulder soreness is not a malady or disease. Shoulder soreness that last months is a symptom of a condition. What Alex Meyer has is an medical condition that the Twins were unable diagnose to treat with any precision that magically went away after 2+ months of inactivity.
  11. This quote greatly concerns me. An injury the Twins can't identify and can't figure out how it happened laid up our top pitching prospect for months. And to judge a multi month injury as a "bump in the road" is a little cavalier. Lifting luggage, tweaking your back, and missing a couple of starts is a bump in the road. Missing half the season is not.
  12. Agree, I wrote a topic on this a few months ago and the Twins have spent almost $4 Million less on prospects this year then last so they certainly have the funds available. http://twinsdaily.com/showthread.php/9226-College-International-Player-Draft-Payroll-Reduction
  13. The 3rd catcher move has always been around the question of what if Mauer was DH and your backup that year was catching and the backup got injured. They couldn't move Mauer to catcher without losing the DH so Gardy always wanted a 3rd option. Given that Suzuki and probably Pinto will not be good enough to earn AB at DH I don't think the Twins will waste a roster spot on a 3rd catcher. One of them will always be on the bench if the other gets injured in a game.
  14. This isn't unique to sports. I work for Thomson Reuters. Thomson bought Reuters in 2008 and named Tom Glocer CEO afterwords. Not happy with company/stock performance he was let go in 2011. Regular employees have more flexibility and can be held accountable with lower performance grades, performance improvement plans, ect... but you need to either have confidence in your leaders doing the job or those leaders should be gone.
  15. Then this has to be a demotion or sidelining of Radcliffe. How can you be VP of player personnel and not have authority to evaluate the personnel?
  16. Whose position/responsibilities did Rob Antony take over? This looks like they the Twins just gave a bunch of guys raises.
  17. One thing I do respect Bill Smith for is that he had the guts to at least try to make the big decisions that were coming after 2007 (Hunter($90)/Santana($137)/Mauer($189)/Morneau($80)/Cuddyer($24)/Nathan($47)). I feel that more of the reason that Terry Ryan left was that he didn't enjoy the "Big" contracts and felt that the negotiations and money involved were not exciting so he took his ball and went home to scouting to let someone else have to deal with this problem.
  18. Here is the context I am aware of. On October 25th Doogie had a phone conversation with Terry Ryan and this was the exchange in regards to the 2nd round protection: http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/QA_with_Twins_GM_Terry_Ryan_on_plans_for_free_agency_and_other_topics102513 About a month later Doogie posts this: http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Wolfson_Updating_Twins_offseason_plan_dont_expect_a_move_this_week112613 Doogie is not a guy that rips the Twins so the fact that he feels this is a contradiction to the statement from October says a lot to me.
  19. When reading some of the linked materials from your article I actually get less sure of the Twins actual commitment. In Doogie's article the Twins are breaking their word on giving up a draft pick for a decent signing: In reading the Pohlad article the feeling I got is that Jim Pohlad has committed to not actively inhibiting Ryan from signing players: I think there is a big difference in "I'm not encouraging him to wait" and actually saying something like "I have encouraged him to be aggressive on both money and years."
  20. Nolasco's agent has already stated his client has multiple 4 year offers so if he is trying to suppress offers he is not doing a good job. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ricky-nolasco-s-agent-says-the-free-agent-starter-has-multiple-four-year-offers-205513603.html
  21. I agree that I could have provided addition context. I was responding to the following posts: Both comments implied that the Twins only need a FA pitcher for a couple of years because all spots in our rotation would eventually be filled up by guys produced in our minor league system. I think that is wrong and free agent starting pitching will always be a part of winning teams. I also never stated that all free agents would be aces signed to 5+ year contacts, just that they would fill a role on a winning team. Some may be top of the rotation guys, others might bring stability to the back of the rotation during the regular season. Some might be signed to short term contracts to prove they have value, some may be long term 9 figure contracts. Do you believe that any team that wins the World Series over the next 5 years will do so without any contribution from a free agent starting pitcher?
  22. There are a number of posts in this thread that imply in the next couple of years we will have enough guys from the minors graduate to the majors that we won't have spots available for any free agents and that free agent pitchers may actually inhibit good pitchers from coming up. I did a quick analysis of the past 5 World Series winners and looked for guys that met the following criteria: - Started 10 or more games for team that year - Signed to a major league free agent contract or traded as a major league player. I found the following: Boston 2013 Lackey Dempster Peavy San Fransisco 2012 Zito St. Louis 2011 Lohse Carpenter Jackson Westbrook San Fransisco 2010 Zito Wellemeyer New York 2009 Sabathia Burnett Pettitte On average the teams that win the World Series have about half of their staff made of Free Agent pitchers or big trade acquisitions. I don't think it is realistic to think that we will have a staff full of minor league developed talent (+Correia for 1 year) and actually win anything.
  23. I find it kind of odd that Terry is unable to even comprehend a question involving signing a free agent. Doogie asks about signing a guy to platoon with Plouffe and somehow Terry didn't hear the "Sign Somebody" but instead heard "Play someone on your roster, maybe Escobar". This is probably just another example of how far the free agency process is from his mind when thinking about improving this team.
  24. I read about the signing at the following URL Twins have signed 12 international free agents, expect to pursue more | 1500 ESPN Twin Cities ? Minnesota Sports News & Opinion (Twins, Vikings, Wolves, Wild, Gophers) | Sportswire: Minnesota Twins I don't know if they offered $4 million or not but the story intimates that they were in the bidding but dropped out when it got too rich for their taste. I agree that reports are mixed on Hinojosa. Some reflect the items you brought up but this report from Jesse Sanchez at MLB.com intimates a higher ceiling with a mid-90's fastball and talks about 2 perfect games he threw. Right-handed pitcher Dalier Hinojosa of Cuba defects, petitioning MLB to become free agent | MLB.com: News I cannot judge which report is accurate but if our choices are Hinojosa in our minor league system or $4-5 million extra in the Twins profit margin that had previously been allocated for prospect acquisition in I would choose Hinojosa all day long.
  25. I agree that sites having a comprehensive list of international signings and amounts per team are impossible to find. The Baseball America article I linked to is not a list of signings though, it is a list of faux draft slots and the amount they are valued at. When you add them up for each team it is the amount they are allowed to spend by MLB on international prospects under the age of 23. So even though we don't have a list of all the Twins signings and their value we know that MLB is capping it at $3.2 million for the Twins this year so I am using that as the max they will spend on international players under 23 this year because they will not accept the penalty. Similar to how MLB just capped all teams at $2.9 million last year and the Twins did not go over that.
