  1. My opinion is if you send him down you are sending him down for the rest of the year. If what he needs to work on is consitency then that takes time to prove. I would give him another week or two before pulling th etrigger on a demotion.
  2. His K% in 2013 before the concussion was 17.5%. After the concussion his 2014 K% is 18.1%. The majority of the growth of his historical K% (11%) happened prior to the concussion and I would be hesitant to link the two.
  3. I don't know how to pull up those stats but I am suspicious that the range they used included the outlier 2009 year. I would be more comfortable looking at 2010-2013 when he reverted to his normal output for the most part.
  4. If the issue is concussion related then shouldn't he be getting better as the year goes on? His average has dropped each month from April->May->June. http://www.fangraphs.com/statsplits.aspx?playerid=1857&position=C&season=2014
  5. I find it kind of amusing that while on a pitching staff with a guy who had what could be described as the best cutter in history (Rivera) he doesn't start using that pitch to dominate until he leaves that staff.
  6. I was just reading on this and found this quote: http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2010/10/09/hall-of-famer-tony-gwynn-has-cancer/ Dipping must be as addictive as hell if you have 2 surgeries related to it and continue using it afterwords.
  7. Sad news on what seemed to be an upbeat guy and a smart baseball guy as well as a HoF. Cautionary tale to kids about chew and what it can do to you.
  8. Is the tuition good for flexible school attendance? Maybe 1 day or 1 night, is Saturday all-right. Is online just fine, nighttime anytime?
  9. In my mind you have to praise the Twins for the mindset change here. They very easily could have pocketed this money and trotted Kubel, Parmalee, Colabello, Pinto, ect.... out for DH for the remainder of the season.
  10. Very disappointed to see that financial considerations seem to be front and center for reasons he is still in the rotation: http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/After_latest_rocky_start_Kevin_Correia_will_remain_in_Twins_rotation060514
  11. He has the worst ERA in all of the majors for active starters and is the only starter in the league with an ERA above 6.00. Uggghhhhh
  12. I don't think it is fair to say Stringer only gave 1 example. Tovar, Phillips, and Rose made the transition from infield to outfield and from the Twins I recall Willingham being a catcher for the Marlins, Cuddyer playing infield, Denny Hocking being a utility guy, and they all made the conversion to OF. Not on the Twins I recall Biggio, Ankiel, Braun, ect..... I think the larger point is that with players converting to outfield in the majors there is a large pool of comps to make people comfortable that it can work. With players converting from switch-hitting to one side of the plate there is not a large pool of comps to make people comfortable.
  13. They are 29th in starter ERA in March/April: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=sta&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2014&month=4&season1=2014&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=15,a They are 18th in starter ERA in May: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=sta&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2014&month=5&season1=2014&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=15,a These dates don't perfectly line up with Pelfrey but they are close enough to prove your point, removing a turd from the rotation helped and maybe removing another would bring us into respectability as a staff.
  14. Correia is currently ranked 96th out 101 pitchers in xFIP, I would say he is already terrible and ready to be removed. We could say his .336 BABIP is unlucky but I would also say his HR/9 of .88 when league average for starters is .97 is lucky. Both his result (ERA = 5.87) and the predictive stat (xFIP = 4.59) suck so I would give him the boot and give May a shot.
  15. Mauer has 4 2/3 years left on his contract which makes it a little closer then you are stating. In my mind it comes down to if you think this is a slump or the beginning of the end. I am still inclined to think this is a slump and would chose Mauer's contract but if you think this is Mauer in freefall then a reasonable person could say I just want the contract that end soonest.
  16. I was looking at some other situations where players had defensive shifts and I cannot find any other players where the shift was to the opposite field. I am curious if anyone knows one? One other thought comes to mind, generally these shifts seem to be put on against power hitters who can at least beat these shifts by hitting the ball to the seats. I think Joe might be a significant disadvantage againsts shift because the long ball is not a part of his game.
  17. I would grade him against his peers (other 1st basemen). He is ranked 22 out of 27 qualified in OPS and WAR. Even if you only look at OBP he is ranked 12 out of 27, middle of the road. He definately deserves a D like Brock and Pat say.
  18. Mauer stated in the article that after a couple of days the back issue went away. I think we have to take him at his word on this and can't project an injury on him to explain away his performance.
  19. Hicks had 5 years of minor league baseball, over 500 games played. Hicks has been given long stretches in the majors and has not been subject to frequent promotions and demotions. During his time in the majors he has been given reasonably regular playing time. He has been given 2 long chances in the majors with 80 games last year and 40 and counting this year. The Twins could have handled some things better(some more AAA time, another option in CF, ect...) but there are countless minor leaguers who would love to be given the type of shot Hicks has been given and there is no doubt in my mind that Hicks deserves a good chunk of the blame for his bad performance. To say it is all on the Twins for putting Hicks in an “impossible situation” suggests a lack of accountability for Hicks.
  20. Carlos Gomez played his first 35 games of 2007 in AAA, playing good defense and batting well with a .778 OPS. He was not promoted to the majors until mid-May. http://www.fangraphs.com/statsd.aspx?playerid=4881&position=OF&type=-1&gds=&gde=&season=2007 Carlos Gomez played 1 season and a month and a half of another in the minors before being promoted. A total of 155 games in the minors. He was 21 years old. He was one of the 5 youngest players in the league in 2007 (Players 21 or younger). Aaron Hicks has played 5 seasons in the minors before getting promoted to the majors. A total of 508 games in the minors. He was 23 years old. He was one of the 48 youngest players in the league 2018 (Players 23 or younger). I personally don't think the situations are remotely similar. Gomez was dramatically rushed through the minors where the best argument one could make for Hicks is he could have used one partial or full season of AAA seasoning before debuting in the majors. If I were to compare this to cooking, Gomez was raw while Hicks was just a little under cooked.
  21. This thread titile is confusing. I thought it was a gambling discussion on Aaron Hicks OPS for a second ;-)
  22. In regards to the comparison to 2013 I would point out the following: - In 2013 Joe was catching so a .743 OPS was still good, even top 10. - In 2014 Joe is playing first so an even lower OPS of .676 is awful, 25th out of 28. Joe absolutely deserves a ton of time to turn this around because he has proven that he is a better player than this but I am mildly concerned by the poor start and this out of character K%.
  23. Maybe it isn't a misdiagnosis but it certainly was an optimistic diagnosis. If the 2 options are that it is a minor sprain that can be played on after 10 days or it is a much more serious sprain that can't be played on for 1.5-2 months then give use the pessimistic diagnosis. The Twins have such a record of failure that they are not given the benefit of the doubt on things like this and should play this conservatively.
  24. Can you attach the link to study you have referred to a number of times? If the matter has been objectively looked at and proven then it should be well documented. Thanks!
  25. Agree, Span had a multitude of influences from his family, school, previous baseball teams, Twins management, ect... as well as this leadership and mentoring from Torii that all combined to make him the player he is. Talent is a component but talented players fail on teams all the time but will sometimes succeed for other teams, partially based coaching and mentoring so I am willing to say that all that stuff is irrelevent. Can someone point me to a source where Joe Mauer took a similar interest in a young catcher (Butera, Ramos, Morales, Pinto) or was he just "present"?
