  1. Good day, and welcome to today’s game thread. 1. It’s a beautiful day for a ball game. Expected weather at game time: Partly cloudy, 72º, very light winds. 2. I’m looking for Berrios to have another good start today. Let’s hope he gets more support than he got last Tuesday against the Padres. 3. Why doesn’t Molitor consistently put the team leader in OBP in the leadoff spot? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3l4nVByCL44 4.Today is the 50th anniversary of a perfect game for a Twins starting pitcher. Sort of. Dean Chance pitched 5 perfect innings in a rain-shortened 2-0 win. 5. Today is the 48th anniversary of Billy Martin sending Dave Boswell to the hospital to get 20 stitches. And some people considered him to be a player’s manager. Lineups and batting orders: Texas: 1. Shin-Soo Choo (L) RF 2. Elvis Andrus ® SS 3. Nomar Mazara (L) LF 4. Adrian Beltre ® DH 5. Rougned Odor (L) 2B 6. Mike Napoli ® 1B 7. Joey Gallo (L) 3B 8. Carlos Gomez ® CF 9. Robinson Chirinos ® C P: Nick Martinez ®, 3-4, 5.07 Twins: 1. Brian Dozier ® 2B 2. Joe Mauer (L) 1B 3. Eduardo Escobar (S) 3B 4. Eddie Rosario (L) LF 5. Robbie Grossman (S) DH 6. Max Kepler (L) RF 7. Byron Buxton ® CF 8. Jason Castro (L) C 9. Jorge Polanco (S) SS P: Jose Berrios ®, 9-5, 3.57
  2. Wow, Boshers beat the jinx.
  3. It's too bad for Buxton that stealing first base is not possible.
  4. Andrus just got scrod by the home plate ump. Until we institute automated strike calling the best we can hope for is that both teams get scrod equally. Not the best way to run a game.
  5. Adrianza no problem with that one. Of course, I could have fielded that flawlessly.
  6. BTW, for those (including me) who hadn't noticed, Granite sent to AAA to make room for Gibson on the roster.
  7. Just don't make the same mistake that a certain someone did and refer to him as your third favorite nephew instead of your favorite third nephew.
  8. Not pertinent to this game (but since this is a game thread anything is pertinent), my son told me today that the Milwaukee Brewers are the only team against which Ervin Santana has not recorded a win. He also told me that the Arizona Diamondbacks are the only team against which Bartolo Colon has not recorded a win. Santana is scheduled to start on Monday against the Brewers, and if Colon pitches every fifth game he'd be scheduled to start on Aug. 20 against the Diamondbacks.
  9. And here I always thought the term came from bridge. In bridge the first team to win two games wins the rubber, analogous to a series in baseball or a match in tennis. So I asked the google and the google told me that the term dates back to lawn bowling in 16th century England. I'm glad I looked it up because my brain enjoys storing information like this that has little to no value.
  10. My son told me that Garcia is the first pitcher since the 1890's to make 3 consecutive starts for 3 different teams.
  11. He is currently on the roster of the Louisville Bats, Cincinnati's AAA affiliate.
  12. I assume that this particular play was legal, although I wonder what the definition of the width of a clear lane is. And if you watch the replay the catcher didn't land as one normally would after a jump. He clearly (IMHO) was trying to block the plate. It's all a moot point since Dozier scored and wasn't injured, but the catcher's foot was very close to taking away the clear lane. His foot came down just a fraction of a second late.
  13. I don't think Nicholas landed the way he did to try to spike Dozier. But I think he did land that way to try to block home plate with his foot. I'm still not clear enough on the rule about blocking home plate to know it that's legal.
  14. Bottom 6 on Aug. 4, Dozier awarded a hit when the throw from 3rd bounced and the 1B didn't handle the hop, but the replay showed Dozier was 6 feet away from the base when the ball arrived. Why isn't that an error?
  15. 103.1 FM, Preston. 1340 AM, Rochester.
  16. I'm trying to decide if you're chicken or if you're a ham.
  17. Perez starting out even worse than Colon. Not that I feel bad about that.
  18. Ho hum, another oppo dinger by Dozier.
