  1. Actually, I don't think that's the case. It's done that way in China and Korea but not Japan.
  2. Oy, if Tonkin throws one of his straight 96's to Stanton we could see one clear the third deck.
  3. Can we please call Ichiro Suzuki by his last name? Like we do for every other visiting player?
  4. Audra can snap my whip any time. (Sorry, that was too big of a softball to take.)
  5. Geez, Plouffe, you just can't stand there and watch a pitch like that.
  6. Conley looks like he's about 15 years old. Or maybe it's just that I'm getting further removed from youth with every passing day.
  7. This better not be due to PED's. Especially after a 3rd deck jack.
  8. Who's this guy working the game with Dick Bremer? He looks vaguely familiar, like I've seen him announcing Twins games in the distant past.
  9. I have no reason not to think Albers is a great guy and all, but if our season gets to the point where he starts a game for the Twins it will mean things have gone from very bad to even worse.
  10. I think it's hard to truly understand the undertreated PTSD that WWII vets contended with. I probably would be hesitant to share much as well.
  11. The worst baseball stadium in MLB. Except if you pitch for the A's.
  12. The ESPN guy said an interesting stat. Sano has the most dingers in MLB since May 11.
  13. Brian, I'd have given you 5 likes. My dad is a WWII vet, but he was very young and didn't leave the US. He was in training to be a bombardier and almost certainly would have been involved in the invasion of Japan. It's easy to make Memorial Day into a nice 3-day weekend but it's important to remember stories like Russ'.
  14. From wikipedia: Most switch-hitters have been right-handed throwers, though–among other exceptions–there have been the following players: Lance Berkman, Dave Collins, Doug Dascenzo, Mitch Webster, Wes Parker, Melky Cabrera, Nick Swisher, Justin Smoak, David Segui, Daniel Nava, and J. T. Snow (who, in the final years of his career, hit exclusively left-handed).
  15. Thanks for asking, because upon rereading this I can see that I was not clear. I'm not necessarily saying we have the best people and best methods. (I suppose it's possible that we do, but I don't know the internal workings of any MLB team well enough to assess that.) But I am saying that this year's roster has many players who are performing below the levels that were reasonably expected of them.
  16. This is huge. Certainly it's possible to make your own luck by working hard and doing good research and (especially) doing good scouting. But baseball is much more of a crapshoot than the other three major North American team sports in terms of evaluating players, especially when it comes to the draft. I'm not going to take the time to do this research, but it would be illuminating to look at all-pro teams from the four sports and see where each player was drafted. Or, to look at it a slightly different way, find out what percentage of high draft picks did not become all-pro or even play for a team in the top level league. Another bit of research I'm not going to do would be to look only at baseball and see where in the draft all-pro team members were chosen and which teams chose which players. What it comes down to is that you can take the best people and the best evaluation methods and still wind up with a team on which many players have a worse-than expected season. That's what we are seeing this year, and I don't think any GM could have forseen or prepared for it. Sometimes you have good luck and sometimes you have bad luck.
  17. The only bar in EGF I remember going to was Goldie's. This was in 1974.
  18. I agree, but my wife insists a couple can be two or three. Although if the Kody Brown legal action gets far enough, maybe a couple can be five.
  19. That's the one I remember hearing about when I was in college. Had a dorm neighbor from Crookston and another from EGF. Had to be one of them who told me.
  20. No headline writer could resist doing that.
  21. Not watching the game but saw the video of the Twins' second run. Mauer was out at second base. Did a little hip-hop on the pop-up slide and was off the base while the tag was applied. Ump called him safe. Blue Jays should have challenged. Did they?
  22. Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a very good actor!
  23. I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I essentially agree with Seth. The purpose of this season should now be to optimize the development of each prospect. Do what is best for each individual. Some are best off in AA or below, some in AAA and some in the majors. Have them play the position that is projected for them in the future. (Put Sano at 3B, for example.) The W-L record of the teams in the organization is of little to no importance, other than making the minor league playoffs provides more games for the players to get in their work.
