    Not if Hughes (or anyone else) has trouble getting through two innings.

    Instead of being the last man in the Twins' pen I think it's better to have him close full time at Rochester. He'll get more meaningful work in that way.

    Of the players currently on the major league roster I think Pressly would be the most likely to succeed as closer if and when Kintzler is injured or gone. But I'm guessing that Chargois is who the Twins higher-ups envision as the next closer. I think he was sent to Rochester so he can close full time and get more experience doing that before being thrust into that role in the majors.

    I hope Breslow has a good first 2 months. He'd be a great flip candidate.

    Massive failure? These guys have been on the job less than five months. They have spent a lot of that time just getting organized, and I'm sure that process has a ways to go yet. They have had to familiarize themselves with the entire organization, players, scouts, coaches, etc. etc. Yes, who is on the major league roster is important, but to have a new administration stumble into a world championship happens once in a lifetime, and we already had our once in a lifetime in 1987.

    I agree with Tonkin being cast as a AAAA player. I don't know the detailed stats about his HR's allowed, but I suspect a high percentage of those were off his fastball. We've heard for years that his fastball is straight, and apparently nothing any of the Twins pitching coaches has tried has helped. Not many minor leaguers can do much with a straight 97, but there are a lot of MLB players who can hit them very very far. That said, I suppose it's not that big of a deal whether he gets one more chance with us or not.

    I'm not going to address any specific post(s) but I think it's sheer guesswork on our part whether the changes in his role on the staff contributed to this injury. That may have or it may not have, I don't know. I would put stock in the opinion of an orthopedic surgeon or perhaps another health care provider but not in the opinion of a baseball writer or a web site participant.

    I'm sure almost everyone expects Mauer to retire after his contract expires after the 2018 season. But even though it is a bit of a drag on the Twins for the next two seasons it could be worse. The Angels owe Albert Pujols $24M for the coming season. And for next season. And the one after that. And the one after that. And the one after that.

    I agree in thinking that these grades are pretty accurate. I think it's proper for grades to be based strictly on performance. It's too subjective to try to account for extenuating circumstances such as Hughes's health and Berrios' inexperience.

    I'm still hoping Vargas can perform well enough to take over at DH. Having a SH there with power from both sides is a very nice weapon to have. Batting Sano 3rd and Vargas 4th could be like the Tigers have had with Cabrera and Martinez.

    In the second half of 1990 and the first half of 1991 he had that heavy sinking fastball that nobody could do anything with. I don't remember what he did to his arm in midseason 1991 but he still somehow eked out 20 wins and made it through the postseason. Unfortunately that dominant pitch never came back.

    I don't know enough about any players to talk about specific deals, but to me this seems like a rare opportunity for the Twins. A player at his peak with a favorable contract who is not going to be part of the Twins' long-term plan with several teams appearing to express interest. This could be a career-defining trade for Falvey and Levine and I'm sure they want to get this one right.

    I disagree. A 29 year old catcher with a serious knee injury? Pass.

    There's not much above Castro in free agency, and trading for a top-flight catcher at this stage of rebuilding would hurt more than help. I think they aimed about right.
