  1. To talk a little further about what I said about installing Meyer as a closer...I don't think the Twins should give up or have given up on finding out if he can succeed as a starter. If he can, he's probably more valuable doing that than relieving. That said, a shut-down closer is just as hard to find as a power starter and also very valuable. The best closers have power pitches, good control and nerves of steel. And throw right-handed. Perkins has the most important three of those four attributes. Meyer certainly has two, and if he can develop the control and cultivate the attitude he could be a ninth-inning (and occasionally eighth-inning) stud. It's way too early to know what will happen and it's not something that happens overnight--it took Aguilera a year to make the transition--but I'm sure there are people in the Twins organization who will be keeping that thought in mind as the next few years play out.
  2. Move Perkins to LH setup and install Meyer as closer. (Mostly but not totally kidding.)
  3. It would be nice, but that's a big if.
  4. Move Perkins to the left-handed setup role and install Meyer as the closer! (Mostly but not totally kidding.)
  5. It's very rare for a pitcher to make the major league roster in the same season in which he's drafted, even just as a September call-up. Brandon Finnegan is very much an outlier, and to expect Jay to be on the Twins roster this year is probably unreasonable. He just turned 21. There's no reason to fast-track him unless he blows everyone away and moves up through the minors quickly.
  6. We've had the conversation about relievers being failed starters. I think the Twins still want to see if Meyer can succeed as a starter but if he can consistently blow people away one inning at a time as a reliever and if he can handle the psychological stress of closing he could become very valuable in that role.
  7. Chris Sale, last 5 games: 0.72 ERA, 65 K, 6 BB. Yikes.
  8. This is exactly why the players' union should be working hard to establish very strict rules against PED use, stricter than the rules currently in place. The union's primary mission should be to protect the interests of the vast majority of its members who play the game straight.
  9. I think any player, manager, coach, general manager or scout who has bet on baseball while on the payroll should be given a lifetime ban from the game. Same for owners. There would also be no HOF elegibility although I don't think that's as big of a deal. So this recent revelation has not had any effect on my opinion.
  10. 3 for 5 with a double. Not bad.
  11. But you can't steal first base.
  12. In three years I'll be disappointed if Buxton isn't leading off, Sano isn't batting third and Vargas isn't batting fourth.
  13. Miguel Sano.
  14. If we are overperforming at 37-32 then we have an average team at best. I agree with pretty much everything jimbo92107 wrote. I've said many times that the mission of the Twins organization in 2015 is to prepare their best prospects as well as possible with the goal of contending in 2016 and beyond.
  15. I remember the game when Gardy tried to stretch Nathan for 3 innings. He had rookie Jesse Crain and his 98-mph (straight) fastball in the pen but didn't want to bring him in because of his inexperience and the fact that this was a postseason game in Yankee Stadium. Retrospect is easy, but as soon as Nathan put a runner on base I'd have brought in Crain and told him if he gets the save he's the hero and if he doesn't it's the managers fault for mishandling the bullpen and bringing a rookie in to face Jeter and A-roid so go ahead and try to blow them away.
  16. The AL is not mediocre. Currently the AL has a record of 84-66 (.560) in interleague play. Shoring up an obvious weakness may be low cost or may not be. It depends on the specific players involved. Making the team better in 2015 should not come at the cost of making the team worse in 2016 and beyond.
  17. Sorry, but humid air is less dense than dry air. Only if there is a significant amount of mist would "thick" air slow the ball down. But I'll stand somewhat corrected about the number of games played in Atlanta. For some reason I mistakenly thought the Braves moved there sooner than that.
  18. I'm not sure I understand this post, but I'm interpreting it to mean that you think Tyler Jay is major league ready. The fact that he's assigned to high-A obviously means the Twins don't think so. It would be a very big (and very pleasant) surprise if he does well enough to improve the Twins this season.
  19. Are they really there? My opinion is I doubt it. A trade meant to improve the likelihood of success of this year's team lowers the likelihood of success of future teams. If that were not the case then the other team wouldn't make the trade. I say we are still rebuilding and shouldn't make such a trade.
  20. I've decided that I'm not going to pay attention to any post that states whether a 21 year old AA pitcher is going to be an ace or a #2 or a #3. Nobody can tell yet. Not even scouts, and certainly not amateur groupies like us.
  21. Fulton County Stadium (small, higher altitude, warm humid air) gave Aaron a lot of help that Mays didn't get at Candlestick Park.
  22. Every player who doesn't have a no-trade clause can be had for a high enough price. A team that is one stud pitcher away from winning the WS this year or next may be willing to pay that price to get Sale. And the Twins are not that team.
  23. The one choice is for the Twins front office to do what they feel is best for Buxton.
  24. That's still too often to see the Brewers or the Phillies.
