  1. Even though we tied it, it never felt like a game we were going to win. Sending Corriea out for the 8th was a mistake, but I don't think we ever had more than a 40% chance of winning it.
  2. I'm on board with keeping Morneau on a reasonable 2-year extension/offering him arbitration. The payroll is tracking towards being about $65 million next year if they trade him. Parmalee's not lighting the world on fire and if he does they'll find AB's for him somewhere. Pelfrey and Carroll should be dealt if you can get anything of value. Possibly Roeneke as well. Willingham if the offer is right. Perkins should be kept unless someone goes crazy.
  3. Nothing has changed regarding the morality of encouraging couples to get married and remain faithful for life. No one is tossing that out. All that has changed is the understanding that gay people are not 'defective' or dangerous and should be treated the same as everyone else. Most people thought this for hundreds of years. They were wrong. It has nothing to do with invalidating everything else about what those same people thought about morality or traditions. Coming to the realization that slavery was wrong didn't invalidate everything our founding fathers believed either. But they were clearly wrong on that issue.
  4. +1. Most people have come to understand that being gay is not a choice and that they will not cause any harm to anyone. People fighting against it are essentially still arguing that it is a choice and gay people are inherently bad. When they try to argue it without saying these things, they're left twisting pretzels about 'tradition' with no substance. If the benefits of marriage are to encourage monogomy/stability of the family unit for children, and economic stability why wouldn't a same-sex couple benefit from it just the same? Your religion is still free to do as it sees fit.
  5. I learned so much from this thread. I had no idea that the primary concern with gay marriage was gay brothers and sisters marrying each other! Why did no one bring this up on the Senate or House floor? Seriously, good for MN. I have yet to hear one good reason against it that didn't involve thumping a Bible. The slippery slope fallacy get sillier every day. Massachusetts has had gay marriage for 10 years. Has polygamy been legalized? Have hundreds of gay brothers married? No? Well I'm sure it's coming down the slope any day now...
  6. Is there any thought to having Hicks just hit RH? His RH swing is so much better.
  7. I had no issue leaving Corriea in if we were still behind. Felt like a CG for Peavy, I was ready to concede the loss. But once it was tied I would have gotten him out of there.
  8. Escobar's still in the game. If god forbid, something happens to Mauer (or anyone else for that matter) you're stuck putting a pitcher in the OF either way.
  9. They should have gotten Escobar into the OF by bringing Carrol in, but I doubt that ball is caught either way. I can't blame Gardy for PH'ing for Hicks. He's pretty close to hopeless left-handed. In any case, Gardy's not getting fired mid-season. Just enjoy the season and queue your b1tchin for October.
  10. I don't question the pinch-hitting, but couldn't they have put Caroll in and shifted Escobar to CF and Ramirez to left? Doumit in the OF should be the last resort.
  11. Brutal loss. Have to win games like this in Fenway. Now a sweep feels likely.
  12. If the Twins improve this year, why are people so eager to see Gardy fired? The 'he's been here too long, his message is stale' thing is such crap. None of the players on the team were here in 2002. Only 2 or 3 were here in 2007. He's generally shown that can handle young players. If we lose 99 games again, make a change for the sake of change I guess. But if this team is sniffing .500 and you still want him gone, then you're being unreasonable.
  13. It's crazy to criticize the Twins for not picking up the option. Could they have tried harder to sign him after declining? Perhaps. But at the time it seemed reasonable not to jump the gun given the other options available. There are plenty of things to criticize about the pitching decisions this winter, but Baker is not at the top of the list.
  14. 1. The pulltabs aren't fully implemented and they did put several back-up sources in the bill. Worst-case they will go back and tweak/add to those, which were all sports/stadium related. 2. The Vikings need to get off of this. They knew the baseball was an important part of the public use of the stadium and if it means the seats are a few feet further back, too bad. 3. This is kind of an elephant in the room. But it's still the most popular league by far. Are we really willing to say 'let the NFL move to LA' because of what 'might' happen down the road? I think any 'major' fallout is still at least a decade away and the NFL will do everything they can to stay in front of it.
  15. In general, even in 're-building' you should allocate your resources to put the best product on the field. The only difference is that you want to ensure you're not 'blocking' anyone or tying up resources in future years recklessly. In this regard, TR has failed. Could he have gotten Grienke? Probably not. But the fact that it was dismissed as laughable to even consider is bothersome. The Twins could have gone 6/$150. Not saying they should have, but they could afford it. The fact that we still act more like Oakland/Tampa than St. LouisDetroit is not right. We're not the little engine that could anymore. Grienke aside, this team can afford a payroll of at least $90 million. The pitching staff was a joke, and much, much more could have been done for it than we have seen so far. Getting Saunders would help. Keeping Baker would have been nice (doesn't preclude going after Pelfrey too). Going after someone like Lannan instead of Corriea. Maybe spending some of the difference/unused $ on an Edwin Jackson. Taking a 'risk' on Marcum instead of Harden. There are many scenarios. But most of them are better than what we got.
  16. Kyle, Pedro Florimon can make a $%^&in play. Let me tell you. Nothing gets by him. He can $%^&ing pick it. On days you pitch, we'll make sure Jamie Carroll plays 2B. You've seen him in the NL. You know he's a $%%^&& human vacuum. We'll even make sure Escobar is at 3B for you. No Plouffe for you. We'll make sure that hot corner is $%%^& covered, Kyle. Now about the outfield...um Gardy's door is super-reinforced steel....but how's $12 million? In general there's no great advantage to recruiting FA's to Minnesota, but there's no disadvantage either relative to Detroit, Milwaukee, St. Louis, KC, Cincy, etc. etc. It's a nice city. It's a beautiful brand-new ballpark with great facilities. It's a division that can be won without a miracle (would your rather be Baltimore or Toronto?) Will we get the guys with stars in their eyes who have the Yankees after them? No. Can we convince someone to choose MN over all of the places I've mentioned? Why not?
  17. The weather? Maybe for the Timberwolves. An MLB player won't be in town until April 1st and can be long gone by November 1st at the latest. Zero reason to avoid signing with the Twins because it's 'too cold.' Even folks who buy the misconception about the weather generally aren't going to be afraid of living here during the summer. In general, there's no reason the Twins can't be similar to St. Louis, both in terms of payroll and marketability.
  18. I'd be OK with Capps if Gardy weren't the manager. I'm afraid Perkins would have to look over his shoulder after 1-2 bad outings. The Punto of the bullpen.
  19. Doogies the 'best local reporter' in the same way that Saunders would be the Twins 'ace'.
  20. Fair enough. But the possible explanations for Manti's story in this thread make Torii uncomfortable.
  21. Of all the things to complain about, this is hardly it. Willingham is no prize but better than Delmon and Parmalee can be just as good as Cuddyer. Further, any game we have a lead after 7 innings will likely have Mastro or someone else in there.
  22. If it was ownership's directive to have a $65 million payroll, TR should have gone into Jim Pohlad's office and thrown things and/or quit. But I highly doubt that was the directive. The time for 'we're a small market club' as the stock excuse is past. The Twins are at worst a mid-market club and can afford a payroll of $90-$110 million. TR has his strong points, but navigating free agency and/or getting ownership to spend when needed are not among them. I generally think the Pohlad's will OK a signing if the GM makes it clear that it's needed. He is not contrained by anyone but himself, IMO and should have done better for the pitching staff than he has. C- at best.
  23. Just saw an article today that Gardy demanded Ryan give him a 'fair shot'. Either way, Mastro and Carroll is not much more appealing.
  24. I'm on board with bringing in a guy like Sanchez even if he sits on the bench. At this point we're going to have what, Hicks leading off and Carroll batting 2nd? Yuck. At the very least, I'd like to have a legit PH option when Florimon comes up with 2 on in the 7th and Escobar or Carroll is not that guy.
