  1. I am hoping for a college pitcher only cause they are closer to the show than a kid like Buxton who might be six years away. On the whole, I am not a big fan of draft watching in any sport. Most of the so-called experts like Mel Kiper Jr are wrong more than they are right. The true test of a draft is in 5 years when you see the results and the busts...but nobody calls the so-called experts on their picks 5 years later.
  2. thanks. interesting to see that life in the minors is a lot tougher than most people realize, though worth it if you make the show.
  3. My thoughts exactly. Lets see what FranKKKie does against a better lineup--which is the vast majority of major league teams. Thats what 29 GMs are saying right now.
  4. Ryan should be listening to offers--especially in areas where Twins have a bit of surplus like OF with Revere AND Span AND Willingham and guys like Hicks and Benson etc in minors. Ryan needs to be asking for starting pitching in exchange.
  5. WOW that was a great and very sad read...wonder how many guys were juiced 15 or 20 years ago...and so many guys all sports dying young like Kirby and Seau...must be a connection.
  6. WOW--lots of good ideas. Being a traditionalist--the first thought I had is not there. That is BAN INTERLEAGUE games. I know thats a problem since next year, there will be interleague every day. But you have two teams fighting for a division title playing different schedules--say Tigers and Twins. Add 2 teams--go back to 4 divisions of 8 teams and the 4 division winners make the playoffs. Every division team plays the same number of games against the teams in the other division of the league. So both Twins and Tigers play the Red Sox and Yanks the same number of games. NO WILD CARDS. Speed up games by enforcing the 25 second pitching rule and reducing the ad time for bullpen calls (I would like to see the time between half innings go back to ONE MINUTE but I know that will never happen with TV). Allow trading of draft picks--why not be like other sports.
  7. Why move Liriano back to rotation unless this is last shot and he goes back to pen when Blackburn comes off rehab. I think closer shot would be better. As a starter Liriano had potential years ago--now not much. NO GM will give us even a decent prospect for him in a trade--maybe another washed up starter in the Marquis, Ramon Ortiz, Sir Sidney tradition....
  8. I do NOT understand the Twins moves...no problem with recalling Manship--that was coming. Why carry 13 pitchers?? Most importantly why put Liriano back in the rotation--unless this is last shot and if he screws up again he goes back to pen when Blackburn comes back from rehab...
  9. I wanted this tried in past years. I always thought that Liriano had one or two inning stuff. He would make a great closer or lefty situational guy. Twins have nothing to lose by trying this and yes, maybe it will help his trade value.
  10. Having been to too many games in a fly ball equals HR park (Camden Yards)--last night not a fair test for Cole--especially considering first MLB start. Give him several more including one or two at Target Field (a pitchers park) and lets see what he has. Hendricks had his chance and blew it. He will get another later this summer...
  11. I think Justin would rather play first than DH and his hitting shows that. May this good hitting continue.
  12. HUH--Benson was a second round pick in 2006--thats 6 years ago. He got a cup of coffee (or a couple of cups) with the Twins and some time in Rochester--thats it in 6 years. Thats pretty bad for a top round pick. Yes, he could turn it around, but it has taken 6 years and he may have peaked. This scares me--I dont want to see Twins draft a HS kid this year--I want a college pitcher. When you are going well its OK to pick HS kids and let them develop over 3-4 years (not 6). When you are not going well, you dont have that luxury.
  13. We signed 2 free agent bats--Doumit and Willingham--unfortunately neither can play defense. Our only good defensive option in RF is Span. Our only good defensive option in LF is Revere. To me the answer is to play Revere in LF and Span in CF and Willingham in RF....until we bring up Benson and make Willingham a DH.
  14. Great article--thanks for posting. This is a vital pick for Twins future and this kid sounds like he could be another Torii or Kirby but we already have Denard Span and Revere and Benson. I think Twins gotta go with a college pitcher who could be an ace in 2014--like Appel or Gausman. This kid wont be MLB ready till 2015. I know picking pitchers is risky--look at Prior, etc. but pitching is what Twins need.
  15. Could not have said it any better. Diamond, Walters (too many HRs), Now DeVries, one or two of these may stick at the level of Baker and Blackburn...now draft a pitcher who could be an ace in 2014 or 2015 (or trade our only real asset--Span for one).
  16. NO NO NOT Liriano...dont put him back in rotation till at least the AS Break. I would bring up Slama for the pen and move Swarzek to the rotation and DFA Marquis
  17. Twins might pursue Greinke--or they might not. Doesnt matter--Grienke wont come here--he will want to go to a contender with an overpriced contract in his pocket.
  18. I dont agree with the booing...I do think Mauer is giving 100%...but I think the years of catching and injuries have caught up. It is now past time for Joe to toss away the catchers mask and shin guards. Joe should be playing at 3B everyday until Miguel is ready. I think his body can recover that way and he can stay healthier for the next 3 or 4 years. Joe has the arm and athletic ability to play 3B.
  19. Definitely take Zimmer...stockpile pitchers...you can never have too much pitching. Buxton seems like another Hicks and Twins dont need a number one pick to take 3-5 years via Beloit, Ft. Myers, New Britain and Rochester.
  20. Nats have Jesus Flores to catch--he was huge prospect a couple of years ago--then got hurt--now catching once or twice per week--will step up. No Nats wont take Butera. Wont give up Lombardozzi (another Twin son) either.
  21. For some strange reason, Gardy likes 13 pitchers on his staff and 3 catchers...so I expect Mastroanni to go down when Morneau comes back. It should be either Burnett or Butera but it wont be.
  22. Since Twins wont be contenders until at least 2014...Pavano and Marquis dont figure in the equation. Of our current other starters the only one with a potential to be an "ace" type is Liriano--but it is only potential. Baker, Blackburn, Swarzek, Duensing are all mediocre at best. I would start Diamond and Walters (maybe Gibson later this summer) and see what they can do. If he gets his act together at Rochester, bring back Hendricks too. No need to start Swarzek or Duensing.
  23. Good article and comments. I dont follow the minors as closely as some of you...but I have noticed that Twins picks havent clicked (as the Hawk says) since 2005 or so. That seems to go along with your article. Its not just pitchers--also position players. Is it the switch to Deron Johnson in 2007 you mentioned??
  24. I was a kid when Casey managed the 62 Mets--he would fit in well with this team--and would screw up names in a funny way--at least the Twins dont have two pitcher named Bob Miller (one lefty and one righty)... Seriously, No to Jake Mauer until Joe is gone. Yes to Brunansky and Cuellar as coaches. I think Ryan has to go outside the Twins organization for mgr. My first choice would be Ron Washington but he wont come. My second choice would be LaRussa but owners wont pay him enough. So third choice Manny Acta.
  25. Amen to that. Where is the player who would stir up this team like Cuddyer, Torii or Thome?? This should be Mauer. Maybe it will be Dozier. Somebody has to do it. As to the current situation--we need to blame whoever has been making draft picks since 2005 or so. Unless I am missing somebody, our high draft picks over the last half dozen years are not in the majors and are not comparable to other teams. Yes Revere has been here as has Hendricks. Ramos is playing here in DC (the trade that probably got Smith fired). Garza has been around. Who else?? Anybody?? Our picks from 1995-2005 were not bad--Milton, Torii, Mauer, Morneau, Cuddyer, etc. Even Casey Blake. What happened. The guy in charge of drafts since 2005 (or 6) should be canned now!! TR needs to pick a guy this year who will be starting in Target Field in 2014--not some guy who will linger in Beloit, Ft Myers and New Britain. Gardy will be gone--I wonder if missing 3 days this weekend is a sign that he is planning to leave on his own at the end of the year.
