  1. lets get real here. Free agency rentals have been doomed by the new agreement. To get a draft pick for Liriano Twins must offer him $12million which is DAM foolish. If they trade him, the new team gets no compensation. Until last night, Liriano was hot for once. Now back to normal. A team picking up Liriano gets him for 8-10 starts--thats it. No value in that. (Maybe for the Nats to replace soon to be shut down Strasberg). The Twins will get nothing for him thanks to the new agreement. As to Span, Willingham etc. Yes ask for a ton, if you get a top prospect like the Marlins did, go for it, if you dont, dont. The Twins have very little of value.
  2. Living in DC--I know the Nats are interested in Span. They DFAd Rick Ankeil so they have an OF spot. Be careful trading with Nats--go for young Lombardozzi and a prospect or two--NOT Storen...
  3. Whether or not it is the Drew factor, Frankie is pitching as well as he has in years. Do we sign him to a 3 year extension--very risky for a guy who is inconsistent?? Do we keep him and risk losing him for nothing in the fall?? No way would I offer him the $12million it would take to get compensation. Hard call--if we trade him we must get a top notch prospect. I am not being paid the big bucks Terry Ryan is--so I wont make the call...
  4. Anything Bud Selig disapproves of is good for the game... I am planning on watching the movie in DC this weekend...lucky I live in a metro area...
  5. Amen to that. Twins have very little of value after Span and Willingham (maybe Revere). I wont be disappointed with Twins trades over the next 45 days--I dont expect anything ofvalue coming in.
  6. Good value for a $1. Yes, but our local teams (Nats and Os) offer free programs--better value--probably not as much material...but price is right.
  7. Re-sign Baker and Liriano??????? LUDICROUS!!! That would take $20mill. of our (hopefully) 100mill. payroll not counting Mauer. Neither has shown he is capable of being an ace (Verlander, CC level) for more than a month at a time. (and those months are few and far between). If we did re-sign both, there would be absolutely ZERO dollars for any free agent. Trade Liriano for any two minor leaguers and whatever else we can get. Maybe like Lohse he will have ONE good year elsewhere. Maybe not--but only one. No GM is gonna give us much for Frankie. No GM is gonna give Frankie a $10 million contract for 2013 that Twins have to.
  8. I live in Maryland--so I used to follow Orioles (until Angelos). Now I do follow Nats--primarily because of Harper--the best rookie I have seen in years--he is worth the price of admisson. My son and I went to see Os/Nats in Baltimore yesterday--in spite of previous comment, park was full--and Harper provided all the excitement--stolen base--single stretched into double--great defensive play--till Weiters HR.
  9. It seems to me that Mauer marked a turning point--Twins did fairly well with HS draft picks until Mauer (Torii, AJ, Cuddy) and pretty poor with the exception of Span (and maybe Revere) since. Is the scouting staff different, is the minor league coaching different?? I also think Buxton has to be on a fast track as number 2 pick. It wll be disappointing if he is not up by Sept. 2016.
  10. The Twins are in last place in the American League and on track for a 100 loss season. The bullpen has been good. The lineup has been better than expected but there are a ton of holes. Biggest one is pitching--are the Pohldads going to shell out the bucks to get somebody who is a number 1 (CC, Verlander, etc.) NO. Therefore, Ryan has to trade to get a starter to build around--that means getting rid of assets where you have a replacement (Span, Willingham--where you have Benson and Revere to play) or those who may be at their peak right now (Plouffe). If we trade people who are basically spare parts (Doumit, Carroll, etc.) or who have health history (Morneau) we will get more pitchers in the tradition of Sir Sidney, Marquis, R. Ortiz...
  11. The Twins have one solid starter for 2014--Diamond. They have some potential starters--Gibson, Hendricks, Walters maybe Liriano if they take a chance--which I would not do. They need another starter. Tradeable assets Span (or Revere), Willingham (in spite of no D), Perkins...maybe Dozier or Doumit. Thats it. Morneau wont bring value cause of concussons. Burton will be viewed as playing now better than his record and will regress (also true of Plouffe). If we are going to get a good number one or two starter like Gio Gonzales of the Nats, we are going to have to package Span (or Revere or Willingham) with a bullpen guy. MLB GMs are smarter than Bill Smith--they wont give us a starter for spare parts like Morneau, Carroll, Burton--even if we put 4 of them in a trade.
  12. I expect he will get offered a 3 year $12-15 million contract...not bad for a guy who was blocked in Twins organization for years and as first commenter said--if he plays another year and a half--he gets fully vested in MLB pension plan.
  13. Morneau has concussion history--he wont bring an offer Twins cant refuse. The only 2 Twns who can are Span and Willingham--trade one if you get a good number 2/3 starter (like Gio or Jordan Zimmerman of Nats) and a pitching prospect doing well in AAA. With Harper I doubt Span is of interest to Nats...maybe elsewhere. Trading others--Carroll, Plouffe, Morneau wont bring either a top notch prospect or #2 starter...Twins need a second reliable starter for 2013 to go along with Diamond. Thats what they should be trading for.
  14. great article--good that you are close to home. Hopefully second half will see more highlights for you and maybe a promotion up the Twins ladder.
  15. I am a firm believer in trading players high value (before it dips). Josh's value is at its high right now. So is Span's. Yes, Twins should consider trading both--Twins wont be a contender in 2013--maybe not 2014--then Josh will be a full-time DH (or should be). So if the Twins can get value--top prospect or two plus good number 3 starter--go for it.
  16. I agree--give Manship a start or two and hope Pavano will be ready ASAP.
  17. To me Capps will not bring much--certainly less than Ramos who we gave up to get him. Liriano and Pavano will get us nothing but salary dump. The only tradeable asset we have is span. Yes, if we can get a starting pitcher for him, grab it, put Revere in CF, maybe bring back Valencia and put Plouffe in RF or put Parmalee there. This team is on a good run now, but I dont think they have enough to contend--the week before the ASB will prove that with 7 games vs Tiggers and Rangers.
  18. Thanks for the chuckle...just checked the Twins schedule...last 7 games before the ASB are Tigers (4) and Texas (3). Texas is simply the best team in MLB right now and I expect Tigers just about ready to turn it around...if Twins win 2 of those 7 I will be shocked.
  19. Yes sad news. I had to read story twice looking for reference to Senators--Ted Williams reign--then I realized that was Dick Bosman another pretty good Maryland born pitcher with similar name....
  20. I dont think Gary Carter and Joe Mauer belong on that list Obviously, Campy and Gabby Hartnett do probably also Ernie Lombardi former Giant C. If Mauer stays at C for another 2-3 years and remains bealthy--both big IFs--then consider him. Johnny Bench is the best C of all-time. Probably Campy number 2--but that may be my Brooklyn Dodger (team I rooted for as kid) bias.
  21. The Phillies may be a better test of this team--but yes, we always do well during the June interleague schedule (this is last year for that with 2 15 team leagues starting 2013). The lineup shows potential--the pitching staff not much. We need to sell off pieces (my choice Span or Revere and Morneau) and pick up A level pitching prospects to go with Hendrix, Diamond and maybe Gibson in 2014.
  22. Back to original topic--great article on RA Dickey by Nick. I am one of those who is not a knuckle ball fan--it is an ugly pitch and leads to ugly games with passed balls and wild pitches. But good for RA for making it with the Mets. As to whether guys got better when leaving Rick Anderson--sure Lohse did under Duncan--but in NL pitchers have lower ERAs cause they face the opposing pitcher. Nathan certainly improved under Anderson. Others like Humber didnt really get an opportunity here...as someone pointed out we traded Garza for Delmon...turned out to be a really bad trade that is not Anderson's fault.
  23. Just out of curiosity--I went to the 2007 draft list--first round only dont have a lot of time. 5 Solid MLB guys from the first round of that draft: Rick Porcello, Jason Heyward, David Price, Matt Weiters, Mike Moustakas... 3 others in MLB--Revere, Ross Detwieler, LaPorta I may have missed one or two who have had a cup of coffee--but 5 years later that is 25% of picks got to the show...lets not look for a big return from Buxton, Young Mazilli or any of the others just yet.
  24. Amen to that. It always amazes me the press the socalled draft experts like Mel Kiper JR get--but nobody looks back to see 5 years later to see how bad Mel's choices were.
  25. I think the original premise of the article was correct...we can discuss all we want...we will know the results of this draft in 2017. There will be busts, there will be injuries, somebody picked later than round 10 will be a superstar. Do we know who any of these will be?? NO!!! When I was a college kid many years ago, the NY Mets had a chance at a 5 tools OF with the first overall pick of the draft. They didnt take him. They went with a catcher instead to fill a need--there was also an argument about being cheap. Did the NY Mets make the right choice?? NO!!! Their catcher--Steve Chillcott got hurt and did nothing. The 5 tools OF turned out to be Reggie Jackson. The Mets fans were split on the choice...we just have to wait and see. I hope Buxton turns out to be Kirby or Torii or at least better than Revere. But we need to wait. Would I have picked him?? NO!! I would have gone with Appel--we need good pitching...but lets wait and see.
