  1. Good article--sounds like a class guy and future team leader. Lets hope that Dozier can anchor the IF well for the next few years. With our pitching staff--he will get lots of chances to work on his defense.
  2. Trading Span may be our best bet. To get quality players/prospects we have to trade assets. We dont have many tradeable assets--Mauer has a no-trade clause and a HUGE BURDENSOME contract, Willingham may be the worst defensive OF the Twins have ever had, Morneau is untradeable due to health concerns, Carroll is 38. Whats left--Valencia and Span and the future like Parmalee and Dozier. Revere and Benson can play CF--Span is our most tradeable asset that could bring us a good starter.
  3. The FO needs to be focusing on the draft. Our current prospects (Dozier, Gibson, Benson, etc.) are not the strongest. We need to be getting something from first couple of picks--look at Aaron Hicks (drafted in 2008) still 2 years away--this is NOT GOOD ENOUGH. I think after draft, Ryan needs to float people like Span, Revere, maybe Willingham, and see what prospects he can get and start building a team for 2014. I would list Morneau but I think his trade value is only slightly better than Liriano.
  4. I was at the Nats/DBacks game last night--made me change my perspective. This season is lost--if we didnt know it after the Os series, we know it now. The Twins need to follow the Nats plan--draft a couple of superstars like Harper and Strasberg, find a sucker to trade them a major league player for Craps, and build around that. The game was frustrating to watch for a Twins fan--Kubel looked good on offense and horrid on defense (but better than Willingham), Ramos is a good MLB catcher. But the important thing to see was Bryce Harper. He is the real deal and a leader (more so than Mauer). He reminded me of a young Torii. The most important task for Terry Ryan is to find this year's Harper in the draft and groom him to be starting in 2014. Everything else is rearranging the deck chairs as somebody else said.
  5. Torii, Cuddyer, Morneau, Mauer--the nucleus of the Twins teams from 5 years ago were all Twins draft picks. Lately, the Twins picks have been poor--Garza probably the best of the recent ones. The trades have been worse. Nothing to show for Johan, the wasted trade with Tampa Bay, the disaster for Crapps. Conveniently we can blame those of Billy Smith. Now the Twins need to get back to developing prospects with better results than we have gotten from Plouffe and Revere so far. It would be nice if Ryan could pull off a trade or two. Yes, the potential to contend in 2014 is there with Dozier, Diamond, Gibson, Benson, Dinkleman, Hicks, etc. But they have to turn out better than Trevor Plouffe.
  6. Interesting article thanks. Sounds like you are enjoying yourself in Beloit.
  7. The only way this makes sense if Mauer knee is worse than we think and Morneau wrist is bad then Mauer DH and Morneau DL. If this is for any other reason--makes no sense. Parmalee should be playing 3/4 of games at 1B. If Mauer plays at 1B then Parmalee sits on bench. Why not bring up Dozier??? If Mauer/Doumit hurt--Drew can get here in 24 hours so worse case scenario Gardy has to move Doumit/Mauer from DH to C and pitcher hits once or twice...
  8. Decision #1--rebuild by giving players experience NOW--recall Dozier, Benson, Diamond, dump Burroughs, and Gray and Maloney (my choice--definitely two of the bullpen). Play Dozier at SS, Parmalee at 1B, Willingham in LF, Benson in CF and Span in RF (Revere as 4th OF). Put Diamond in rotation and Liriano in pen. Decsion #2--(doesnt fit your scenario)--in June trade Span or Benson with somebody (Valencia??) for good number 2 starter say Jordan Zimmerman of Nats. Decision #3--pick up free agent starter like Oswalt.
  9. Good concept--bad ideas. Luke Hughes is not a MLB quality player anywhere and he is gone. Liriano seems to have a good inning to start--that tells me he should be sent to the pen--not to Rochester or New Britain. Yes, bring Diamond up why not, get rid of Blackburn... But the big move--bring up Dozier--put him at SS--put Carroll at 2B.
  10. Great stories--I like the intimacy of minor league parks--so I can relate to the fans heckling...but I would never do that !!!???!!!
  11. As I have said in other posts in Twins Daily...move Liriano to the pen...he can give us a great 1 or 2 innings coming on in the 7th. If he finds his stuff, Liriano could be our closer in 2013...a role he is more suited for than starting and when we are a contending team we need a closer better than Craps.
  12. the only way I trade span is for a good young starting pitcher. In the example above--if trade with the Nats--not Storen or Clippard--but yes for Strasberg (wont happen) or Jordan Zimmerman (possible).
  13. I think Frankie should be in the pen--one or two innings per appearance--I have said this for the past 2-3 seasons. He has great stuff and would be a great guy to bring on in the 7th.
  14. Waiver wire--other teams cast offs are not the answer. Terry Ryan may be a great GM but other GMs are not dumb. If a pitcher is put on waivers there is a reason. Put Liriano in the pen. Put Hendricks and Swarzak at the top of the rotation and hope they develop. Then draft a good college pitcher this summer who has a chance to help us in 2013 or more importantly 2014. Bring up the kids (Dozier, Benson, etc) and let them grow here. That also means playing Parmalee at 1B regularly--not Morneau--Parmalee is the 1B of the future. The Twins are not going to be a contender until 2014 at best. Lets start building that team now.
  15. I have been saying this for the last two seasons. Liriano is a relief pitcher not a starter. I think in two years he could be the closer with Perkins as set up. Put Liriano in the pen now and give Swarzek and Hendricks the ball every 5th day and maybe Duensing too.
  16. Good points. Gardy does not like to have his second catcher at DH--so I think Mauer will be at 1B once or twice a week. If Morneau is at 1B half the time--doesnt leave much playing time for Parmalee. Maybe a trip to Rochester until the AS break is in the cards when Marquis is put on the roster. Not a bad idea...
  17. "There just weren't enough hits on the draft picks 5-10 years ago. " True enough. Lets also point blame to Bill Smith for the truly lousy trades. Craps for Ramos, the Garza fiasco, nothing to show for Johan (not that he has done anything for Mets)...Bill Smith really let this team down.
  18. I want Dozier up now--and Carroll/Hughes playing 2b. I know it wont happen until my birthday (June 3)--that way Twins keep Dozier under control for another season before he gets to arbitration and free agency...
  19. Way too early for everybody to be panicking...yes Twins lost 2 to Orioles...yes it looks bad but... We need defense to back up the Anderson pitch to contact...we dont have defense...play Revere in CF...he will catch everything and move Span to RF...if we survived Delmon (and Ford) in LF we can survive Josh. Bring up Dozier and play him everyday at SS until he proves he cant play there. Play Carroll at 3B (or Hughes) until Valencia realizes he has to play decent defense to stay in the lineup. This team is not a 500 team--we have to remember.
  20. Amen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I remember in college skipping classes four years in a row to drive to Shea (one year it snowed) just to see Mets Opening Days. I dont think I missed one starting from when Shea opened (I was in High School) till 76 when I moved to DC. Its not the same now with the stupid games in Japan, the staggered opening days so that two open today, a few tomorrow and some Friday. Fire Bud Selig!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  21. I dont see Justin getting any 1B playing time till inter-league play. I hope that Mauer gets some 1B time so he can stay healthy but expect that Parmalee will basically play 1B every day. As to stats for Justin this year--way to early to predict--playing DH helps, but he still has to deal with base running plays, airplane flights, overall fatigue and normal baseball injuries. I hope we get 100 games from Justin but I have my doubts.
  22. To me RF is Plouffe's to lose. Doumit can not play every day and stay healthy. Unless Hughes/Burroughs plays 1B regularly--Parmalee will play there--Morneau is DH except NL games. So I expect Plouffe in RF say 2/3 the time, Doumit the rest. If Plouffe doesnt work--then go with my first choice lineup: Span RF, Carroll SS, Mauer C, Morneau DH, Willingham LF, Parmalee 1b, Valencia 3b, Casilla 2B, Revere CF. I dont understand why Revere isnt starting in CF with his defense and Span in RF.
  23. Disappointed that Dozier is not on roster. I understand--if not playing everyday in majors, play everyday in Rochester. But disappointed just the same. Hope and pray that Dozier is starting SS in Minnesota by my birthday (June 3)...just like Nat fans here are expecting of Harper. The thing that really scares me is the bullpen...
  24. Parmalee will have an outstanding year. Duensing will be the surprise pitcher--I think he will be starting by May 15--inevitable injuries and win 12-15 games.
  25. Here goes: NL Divisions--Giants, Reds, Nats NL Wild Cards--Fish, Cards (for the record I hate 2nd wild card--just a move to ensure BoSox make playoffs) AL Divisions--Yanks, Tiggers, Angels AL Wild Cards--Rangers, D Rays NL CS Reds over Giants AL CS Angles over Yanks WS Angels over Reds in 6
