    yeah, but by keeping Plouffe there they threw Sano out in RF. I'm guessing that ends up being a net negative, defensively :-)

    At home he batted .302/.354/.407 BABIP over .410 Away he batted .246/.293/.406 BABIP under .290.

    Well, we don't have a clear #1 or #2 type starter, so it's a coin toss. Based on the guys who will be in the rotation to start the season, I'd give it to Gibson.

    Murphy played half his games in Yankee Stadium, had a season BABIP in the high .350s, and ended up with an OPS in the .730s. I'm not sure he can sustain a .700 OPS at the MLB level away from a hitter's park and without a very high BABIP. His minor league OPS was only in the 730s.

    This decision was made last summer. But yeah, May wasn't their competition. He was assured a spot in the bullpen a long time ago.

    Man I love this post so much! When demoted May had the best WAR of any starter in the rotation by a good margin. Like he was the only one over 1.0 and he was close to 2.0. He had the most Ks/9 and the 2nd least BB/9. At the All Star break, he still led all Twins starters in WAR by half a win.

    That's probably the best idea. To just take out FA acquisition out of the equation all together. And how convenient that would be since that is what Ryan is most criticized for :-)

    As the called strike zones continue to expand, walks are going down. Hughes did the same thing from 2013 to 2014. And do we know a few more walks will kill him/his numbers? Now, is he going to continue to have a BABIP against almost 40 points higher than league average? Not sure how a 28 point differenrce in BABIP isn;t too out of the ordinary, but see below. 'Unsurprisingly, May posted an unsightly .340 BABIP last season, backed up by a subpar hard-hit rate of 29.8 percent. His approach shouldn't bear all the blame for that — his defense didn't do him any favors, and he had a minor-league BABIP of .312, so that wasn't too out of the ordinary. Still, he probably wouldn't have allowed so many hits without pounding the zone.'

    What kind of good luck do you think he was having? A well above above average BABIP against?

    I think he has the talent to be a #2-#3 type.

    except there's no guarantee that's what will happen. an article on MLB has Ryan hints he'd like to see him do something else,'"We are going to put him in the bullpen," Ryan said. "I don't know how they'll use him. If he throws two innings, three innings, I don't care. I kind of like those multi-inning relievers."' in any event, if the bullpen had been addressed properly, it wouldn't be necessary (assuming it is, which I question)..

    unfortunately, by then, he'll be 30 or so and pigeonholed into being a reliever in the league.

    Problem is, they don't have plenty of BETTER starters, so it hurts the 2016 team by having inferior options in the rotation. Second, they need good relievers because they did nothing to address the bullpen, the self-proclaimed #1 priority in the offseason. And yes, it is unfair to May, who did nothing to deserve the demotion last year to begin with. You say boo-hoo cry me a river, I say unfair is unfair even for professional ball players. These guys work hard most of their lives to get to the show and their effort shouldn't be minimalized because you think they should just be happy with having an inferior role.

    No surprise at all. He was never in competition for a spot, regardless of what the FO said.. This was obvious even before TR did nothing to improve the bullpen this offseason. What a waste of talent..

    I hope Murphy does as well, but I like Hicks and want him to do well too.

    Yeah, I know that. I think he will be eventually, if not some time this year then next year. Ellsbury is injury prone and Beltran is a FA next year.

    I'm hoping Aaron Hicks has a fantastic career as a starting player.

    Yeah, it's amazing how many times our announcers like to point out how walking the first batter of an inning is so horrible. My question always is, 'How is it any worse than giving up a single (not to mention a 2B, 3B or HR). Why single out the walk as blasphemy? Perhaps it's the delusion that a walk is always the fault of the pitcher as opposed to sometimes the result of a very good plate appearance?

    Honestly, I'm not sure Rosario would have to pull a Santana to show he's not a sure fire LF (or starter at all). He wasn't nearly the offensive force Santana was when Santana posted the unsustainable BABIP in 2014. 21 LF in baseball had 450 or more PAs. His OBP was like .289. 20th out of 21. He had a 98 wRC+. That tied him with Revere for 16th. And he also had a fairly high BABIP which will need to be watched (not 2014 Santana high, but still high). Having said that, he finished tied for 10th out of 21 in WAR. So if he walks a bit more, Ks a bit less, even a drop in BABIP won't hurt him too much. Defense has to stay awesome.

    This site has had a ton of Mauer bashing on it for quite some time. He's constantly been slammed no matter what or who the thread is about. Finding a reason to slam Mauer and blame him and/or his contract for our woes is like a sport in here. Yes, finally a comment was made by the powers that be that maybe enough is enough in regards to him until something new to slam him about comes along. Let's not act as if it's never been allowed. He's taken more grief than all other Twins players combined on this site.
