  1. If I'm a batter and I know a pitcher likes to work real fast, I'm going to try and disrupt that. Not sure how trying to get a pitcher out of his groove/comfort level wouldn't be strategic. And while it may not appeal to people who need action all the time, for those who think of baseball as a sport that is also a thinking man's game, I enjoy it. I do understand that people enjoy the game in different ways though.
  2. My issue with all this is sometimes the batter is just trying to upset the pacing of the pitcher. Get him out of his rhythm. It's the strategy thing. I like that stuff. Pitchers like Buehrle would LOVE the pitch clock and forcing batters to stay in the box.
  3. So Law has the top 3, Cubs, Twins, Astros.
  4. Yeah, Houston may end up with a worse record than us, just based on the division competition they'll be facing, but I'm not even sure they'll do that. I think, right now, the Astros are better than we are.
  5. exactly. that's just on field value. I imagine he's been worth quite a bit in other ways as well.
  6. I think a #3 pitcher isn't just slightly above average. Most relievers are pitchers who aren't good enough to start. They have to be included into the mix. A typical #3 pitcher is a quality pitcher.
  7. I think the Brewers and Reds are gonna crash and burn. The other three, yeah, that should be fun to watch.
  8. Well, Arizona isn't in the AL West :-) ...and the Rangers had so many bloody injuries I'm not surprised how bad they were last year, but I expect rebound of sorts. The NL Central has it's issues too though.
  9. I'd have the AL West as the clear best division, but yeah. The NL Central should be interesting. I'm going to either the Houston series or the Cubs series this year.
  10. Santana had the highest BABIP since Carew in 1977 for a player with 400 or more PAs. Even if it drops down to .330-.340 BABIP (still well above average), it's a huge drop.
  11. ZIPs also projects us to have the 27th best record in baseball.
  12. I think what he's written makes quite a bit of sense. I don't think he's saying, at all, that it's just Santana's regression that will hurt the offense. He's just the main example. I don't expect them to be good at all. I'd be happy if we managed 75 wins.
  13. Twins are 27th, and last in the AL. http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/54964/ranking-the-teams-30-through-25-2 'Torii Hunter and Oswaldo Arcia are penciled in as two starting outfielders, two guys who would have trouble covering enough ground in a beer league softball outfield. Hunter had minus-18 defensive runs saved and Arcia minus-10 (in about half a season of playing time). The Twins ranked as the second-worst defensive team in the majors via defensive runs saved in 2014 and that's going to be a big issue again.'
  14. 'What's interesting is, I think I remember Mauer making this list a couple years ago, when he still was at catcher.' In 2012 and 2013, Mauer was worth over 20M in both years, so it's hard to believe that's true unless it was just for 2011. If it was just for 2011, that would make it silly to judge an 8 year contract on one year. So, yeah, that would be about right for ESPN.
  15. If Mauer hits the way he normally did, or close to what he normally did, he'll still be an above average 1B overall.
  16. yeah, but he's also only been at 1B for one year. 31 players that are primarily 1Bs had 400 or more PAs and he was 16th in WAR. So right at average and peaking up in the 2nd half (9th in WAR for 1B)
  17. Mauer and Hughes.
  18. I think Plouffe should be top 10 right now. I'm not sure there's 10 more I'd take over him right now.
  19. yes, they certainly have a history of promoting slowly, Hopefully, we'll start seeing some change, assuming the players are deserving. Maybe the type of guys we focused on in the 2014 draft, all those college relievers, will move faster than normal for us.
  20. I think his point was at 25, we are already due to get his whole prime. Some would argue the prime is even earlier and we wasted last year. I still think he doesn't make the team out of ST. I think service time WILL factor into it, whether it should or not. And I think they have excuses they can use to try and justify it.
  21. that's a great example of one case. I have no idea how fast the Twins will move up these guys we just drafted. Seems he was saying these guys could move up fast. In any event, how many teams promote a guy to the majors the year they drafted him? EVERY team is slow to promote compared to that, not just the Twins. And I don't see the Royals historically doing it either.
  22. yeah, I read the other posts, and I've read a lot of things concerning the length of game and how that extra 15, 20 minutes is such a problem and how the new Commish wants to shorten it. My point was, I have no issues with the game being longer. If I'm at a game, I ESPECIALLY like that the game takes longer. I enjoy the experience. But I'm not part of the ADD crowd or people who need to rush through things to get to other things. I can just sit back, relax, and take it all in. I hate two hour baseball games though, especially if I paid to go.
  23. yeah, if he was talking how we did things before, but he's talking about the guys we just drafted right?
  24. ugh. Did anyone watch the episode? Who did the humans pick? Because, as a human, I wouldn't have Altuve in front of Zobrist or Pedroia either. I'd have him 4th or 5th. Likely 4th. Astros second baseman Jose Altuve ranks sixth on the list created by MLBN's "Shredder". The "Shredder" take into account "a number of offensive and defensive metrics, both advanced and traditional, plus projections for the upcoming season". Brian Kenny ranked Altuve second, and Harold Reynolds ranked him third on their personal lists respectively.
