  1. or the almost 10 season span where we weren't that good and attendance dropped could have lowered the volume a bit :-)
  2. Kiley McDaniel has him as our #6 prospect and says he sees him as a '#3/4 starter or closer. 'Most scouts think he ends up as a shutdown closer, but the Twins are trying to make him a starter and there’s still a chance Meyer gets there. If he can tone everything down to where it’s repeatable, the upside is probably a #3 starter but this seems destined for the bullpen at some point.' http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/evaluating-the-prospects-minnesota-twins/
  3. They put him there because that is where he will likely play most of his games
  4. I would too. If he was playing in a bigger market for a better team, he'd be higher. He was 11th in his first year at 2B and 5th last year. Though I'm surprised Kipnis isn't in there at all. He should bounce back. So 'The Shredder' might have Dozier at 9th, and the Shredder doesn't explain itself, but other people on the panel may have him higher or lower and might say why.
  5. And Alex Meyer, the special talent, will 'only' be 25 this year.
  6. Well, it's best to use 3 (or more years) to gain a true look at a players defensive abilities because (and this next part likely answers your question), UZR is a stat based on comparing players to others playing the same position. So yes, a players UZR can change even if his defense stays the same because the average abilities of players playing the same position change from year to year.
  7. I believe if he took better routes, he'd have a lot less spectacular plays, but be a better overall defender. Maybe that's why he ranked 17th out of 19 qualifying CFs in revised zone rating (RZR) this year resulting in -18 runs saved.
  8. which stuff specifically? Edit. Oh, the info I asked for earlier. Thanks
  9. Not with RBI it doesn't. RBI opps are random events, completely out of the hands of the batter. You can have a season where you hit poorly with RISP and have a lot of RBI and another year where you hit well with RISP and have much less RBI, The year Howard won the MVP, one reason he won MVP was that he had more RBI than Pujols. Howard hit in the low .200s with RISP, Pujols hit almost .400 with RISP. Pujols did much better driving in the runs that were available to drive in, but Howard had more.
  10. it was a great article. His arm is so bloody weak. OF assist is yet another old time stat that used to be considered a telling that. As we can see, it really isn't. It's one reason he gets such bad grades in defensive metrics.
  11. anyone know Meyer's swinging strikeout rate as opposed to strikeouts where the guy looked at strike 3?
  12. lots of Twins were high up on pitches per PA and our offense worked out pretty well
  13. Except that you specifically said, in your argument against WHIP, 'Anything that gives a silly little walk the same weight as a HR probably shouldn't be taken too seriously.' And 'anything' includes OBP and OPS. But now you say a stat that does that is okay because it also does something you like. Unfortunately, OPS isn't that great because it doesn't properly weigh OBP (too little value) and, therefore, wRC+ is better. Additionally, I never said WHIP WAS a great stat, It's just a quick rough stat. It's not great, but it's not worthless. I did say that all stats have their issues, so one can take shots at most any stat and say it's useless or silly, or whatever jabs they feel like using, depending on how they want it to fit their argument at the time. TRUTH is, the TWINS have real issues with their pitchers walking guys. They take pride in not doing that. THAT is indisputable. I NEVER said I agree with that obsessive philosophy, did I? Did I say if it were up to me, they shouldn't have him on the 25 man out of ST? No, I never said that. I wanted him up LAST year. But, he walks almost 4.5 guys per 9IP. Take that and the service time issue, and I doubt he makes the team out of ST because the TWINS will take that into account. and I liked the 'a wise poster' comment. I get it. I love little shots like that.
  14. who is the scout and/or front office person that recommended him? Hasn't there been a story on that?
  15. Like OBP does and by extension OPS? Do those deserve to be taken at least somewhat seriously, or can they all be blown off too? yes, it's a imperfect stat for sure, like most any other stat (some more than others). the walks per 9 IP stands out in his case though, and in Meyer's case less than 10% of the hits he gave up were HR, so he is still giving up too many hit and walks per 9IP, especially the walks part (for a team that seriously hates pitchers to walk batters to the point of obsession). And that was the whole point. We were talking about why he likely wouldn't make the 25 man roster out of ST. I don't see the Twins looking at almost 4 1/2 walks per 9 IP and saying, yup he's ready. They'll at least keep him down long enough to get service time considerations and they can use the control issues as a reason.
  16. Oh, even better. Let's hope they get him.
  17. I imagine we'll see some negative regression at least offensively. I think he's adjusting to the pitcher's adjustments and he'll end up with a higher OBP and a lower slugging % than last year. He seemed to moving in that direction in the 2nd half. On top of that, if he stops swinging for the fences, he may raise that BABIP and BA. Basically, I think the power will diminish but he'll improve in the BA/OBP area. On the bright side, I think he'll improve his defensive metrics from last year. So he may end up being a high 3 WAR player instead of a mid 4 WAR guy like he was last year. Either way, he'll be one of our best players.
  18. I think it would be good for him to do it more often if only to keep pitchers honest.
  19. See, I see it different. For most of his career Mauer has hit very well with RISP. Most pitchers know how good of a hitter Mauer is and I imagine most would rather face someone else than him in those situations. So they pick around the plate and hope he goes for their pitch instead of his. If he doesn't bite, the worst he can do is get on base. Beter that then give up the hit. Why go after a guy who hits like that? Instead of Mauer forcing the issue and swinging at pitcher's pitches, he does what he always does, look for his pitch. Make pitchers throw strikes. There is no guarantee that if he forced the issue or was more aggressive that we'd see better results by him swinging at pitches that are nibbling at the plate. I don't see it as passive, I see it as smart. Votto, when asked, has said pretty much the same thing. It's as if some would rather these guys swing at pitcher's pitches that could very well make unproductive outs then actually get another guy on base. Also, Mauer career slash line with RISP is better than his overall career slash line. Better BA (by 11 points), better OBP (55 points), better slugging % (20 points). So, for his career, he does better in those situations than not in those situations.
  20. yes his 2012 and 2013 season were very under-rated due to people looking at traditional counting stats and, in the case of 2013, the concussion that halted a very good season. I think he bounces back to be the kind of player he was in those two seasons.
  21. If he can get his wRC+ back up to his career averages, he'll be an above average offensive 1B, but in fantasy leagues that place so much value on the HR and RBI, and that's a good chunk that do, he may might always be subpar at 1B.
  22. I feel bad for him, but I don't feel bad for the Tigers.
  23. I'm not sure that's fair, at least in regards to me. With this team so completely heck bent against walks, (seemingly a team point of pride even at the expense of BAA/OBPA/OPSA), I would just think that the Twins see that and think maybe he needs more time to get that under control. I remember Boof being a K guy too with a similar ERA in AAA and a similar WHIP. Of course the strike zone has expanded so maybe it's less of an issue now.
  24. What exactly did I miss? Gardy did say he was going to let Casilla battle for the shortstop job before Hardy was ever traded. Nishi did come in but even before he got to the team there was talk of him playing 2B because they didn't think he had the arm for a shortstop. He did start the season at 2B and then broke his leg.
  25. Did he have a very good year in AAA? His Ks were impressive, but his walks were a big flashing red warning light and his WHIP wasn't great either. His ERA wasn't overly impressive either. Perhaps you can put those numbers into context, because it's certainly possible I'm missing something.
