  1. yeah, your post was very funny, I cracked up
  2. his career wRC+ is right about 130 though. So 125 isn't too far from that and pretty darn good for a 1B. I'll go out on a limb and say we see a wRC+ of 135 or more from him this year while playing 135 or more games. (don't know what Molitor's game plan for subs will go).
  3. That's funny! But Smith said Gardy pushed for Hardy to be gone because he wanted speed at the shortstop position. Gardy said before Hardy was traded that Casilla would compete with Hardy for the shortstop job because he liked his athleticism. So Hardy got traded, and Casilla took shortstop and yeah, that didn't work out. And if I remember correctly Gardy pushed for a 'real closer' too.
  4. ah, see, I was pretty convinced Gibson would make the rotation myself. That wasn't a shocker for me. But we can look back at the CF competition between Gomez, Span and Pridie. We can look at the rotation competition that Slowey lost even though he posted the best ST ERA out of all the pitchers who were given spots. They very likely already have a serious idea who they are going to put in the 5 spot, and I imagine injury is the only thing that stops that.
  5. If Santana's defense doesn't work at shortstop, maybe he moves to the OF, but if his BABIP goes to normal, dropping his offensive production big time, then we may not care if he has a spot at all.
  6. Which catchers are you referring to that had twice as many games played? Are you talking historically or during the time he played catcher?
  7. seriously doubt Meyer makes the team out of spring training in any capacity.
  8. I'm going to guess they'll use whomever they already have slated for the spot.
  9. could it have also had to do with the team not really having any other real offensive threat in the first half?
  10. he's also untradeable because of his full no trade clause and his 10-5 rights :-)
  11. Even then you can use 'clutch stats' or slash lines with RISP. And while OBP and OPS have decent value in evaluation as rough stats, there are stats better to gauge offense. OPS doesn't really value OBP enough. I like wRC+.
  12. Yes, it's a great year for feet to get wet, absolutely. The specific post of mine you quoted is in reference to just the pitching staff (and why I still think the overall performance of the rotation will still be bad in that regard) but yeah overall,team-wide, it's a great year to get feet wet. Unfortunately, a couple signings will delay that for at least.
  13. I don't know why the quote appears twice.
  14. How do you KNOW they aren't crediting him properly for what he does well? Maybe they are crediting him properly for what he does well but that doesn't outweigh the things he doesn't. Should they only take into account what he does well and ignore the rest? In any event, you have more than clearly stated your belief the metrics are terrible at evaluations. Unfortunately, you state your belief as fact without providing any alternative form of unbias evaluation to back up your opinion. You believe he's a good, or better, defender than he is and since the metrics disagree it must be the metrics that are wrong or are missing something. So while I truly respect your opinion, in my opinion (even without the metrics) I see a bad defender and the metrics, made by people who evaluate defense for a living, back up what my eyes have told me. I never said he was done or that he was garbage. Being between a role player and a solid starter does not demonstrate done or garbage. IMO, he won't be a difference maker though, not when taking into account his overall game. He will likely be overpaid though, for what he provides.
  15. I enjoyed the debate, gonna spend time with the Mrs. now,
  16. I didn't give the guy who said he was done a like, nor did I quote him and say I agree that he's done. When I jumped in, that was only me talking to Nick about his stats, doesn't mean I actually think he's done. I don;t think he's any kind of difference maker though. Like most debates, this doesn't have to be one far side or the other far side. There is middle ground. I think there's a lot more middle ground to debates than we see in debates here. Not done, but not as good as you and Nick and others make him out to be.
  17. I didn't understand this post. Can you explain? Show me what discussion you are referring to. I don't remember saying he was done, even here, even in this discussion, but I've certainly never said he was an above average or better player.
  18. But no one can actually come up with a legitimate alternative to judge a player's overall performance, mostly because no one person can possibly watch enough of every player play their respective positions to get a big enough sample size to gauge where his talent fits in amongst others at same position. And even if they could, there would be bias. And I imagine Abreu and LaRoche will split 1B/DH.
  19. so you're saying he's a good player and I'm saying he's between between a role player and a solid starter. How much different do you find these terms? If teams though he was as good as you seem to be thinking he is, he gets a longer and better contract. The White Sox stretched to get a guy to fill a role, like we did with Hunter, though not as bad as what we did.
  20. I've already explained why I think that he is what he is. And I think it's bizarre people point to RBI as a stat to judge a player by. I don't look at RBI as a stat for judging a player's abilities. And if a guy is performing the way you said and all he's doing is DHing or playing a very poor 1B, it's not that overwhelming coming from those positions. If he was doing that as a shortstop or a CF, or a 2B, it'd be different, but for a 1B/DH? And if he was as good as you're making him out to be, he would have gotten a much better contract than he did this offseason instead of all those numbers you threw out only being worth a 2 year contract (on an AL team). He's only been worth more than 2.1 WAR ONCE in his whole 11 year career. He only has a hair over 12 combined WAR for his WHOLE career.
  21. better than any alternative to measuring it, and while it's not perfect, it shouldn't be tossed away as worthless because it makes a player we think is better than he is look not as good as we think he does. I've watched him a lot and I don't see anything at all special over the last two, three years when comparing him to other 1Bs. So I absolutely buy the fact that he's just not that good. WAR says he's a role player/low end baromter of a solid starter. That's about right.
  22. I think there's a lot of HOPING in there, which isn't a substitute for knowing you had a good rotation. Even if the young guys come in (and I use that word young loosely when talking about Meyer), its gonna take time for them to adjust like it does for most (not all).
  23. yeah, I wouldn't. Because defense needs to be considered when looking at the overall value of the player. Too many people don't value it. On top of that, there's more to the game then HR and RBI when talking value.
  24. There is no way I'd judge a player based on stats that are so very much dependent on the play of others, which RBI, Runs, Win/losses for pitcher. I like what Cameron said in today's chat. Someone said, 'Finish this sentence: Runs and RBIs are a good stat for' He said 'The 1800s'. I could not agree more.
  25. The only thing is, his BABIP last year was nearly identical to his career average (very good) which basically means his hits are falling in line with his career norms. Pitchers really have no reason to pitch him middle in, or in at all, so like you said he hits the pitches where he's pitched, low and away pitches go opposite field. It does seem like he has been trying to pull more though and when he does this on outside pitches, those are becoming outs.
