IMO, I think the Years is what appealed to Hunter more than anything. The Angels offered him 5 years, Twins offered him 3? Plus the Twins waited a long time to make him an offer to begin with when he wanted a deal prior to his last season. Then there was the Castillo trade.
Nothing at all. Just not someone that pops into my mind when considering my favorite ball players. Everyone has their favorites. Lots of people like Phillips.
Hunter played for the Twins in parts of 12 seasons and is now on his 10th full season. He was also drafted by us and was an every day player. Santana played in parts of 8 seasons with the Twins, wasn't a full time starting pitcher with us until 2004, and left after 2007. And he was traded for. I'm a huge fan of Santana, and not much of a Hunter one outside of his defense his first round with us, but I just don't think Santana will even be considered for Twins HOF even if he was the best in the game for 5 years (4 with us), which he was IMO.
Was he the face of the team though? I think we saw them push M&M quite a bit and that winning extended three more years after he left. Certainly wouldn't bother me if they did and I think they will.
I think they may retire his number. Whether they should or not, I don't know. We have, what, 6 players and Kelly's number retired along with Jackie's # 42?
I hear/read national media guys gushing over him all the time. I can't speak for local media of Anaheim and Detroit cause I don't live there, but from a national standpoint, he seems very well liked by the media. And yes, he has stuck his foot in his mouth on multiple occasions as well as other things, yet he gets a pass by a lot of the national media and not a small fraction of his fans. He's always willing to talk to the media, seems to love to talk to them for the most part, which gives them stuff to write without having to push too hard. And the writers vote.
The one thing Hunter has going for him is that the media LOVES him. He's not a HOFer, and he shouldn't and likely won't make it in, but it could happen.
Mauer is starting to turn it on. .837 OPS in the last two weeks, .954 OPS in last week. And he went 2-4 today. He's also batting .400/.517/.523 with RISP and .346/.451/.467 with men on base. Yes, he's been disappointing, but not in all aspects and not recently.
Tulo is my favorite current MLB baseball player, period. He is followed by a couple former Twins. I love the Twins as a whole, but right now, the only Twin in my top 10 of favorite MLB players is Dozier.
Congrats to Meyer for getting the call. He'll be fun to watch. I won't call him a kid, cause at 25 I don't think he is that, but it's nice to see more rookies being called up.
I love it when Harold Reynolds says with such obvious arrogance that a pitcher is DEFINITELY the guy who should be starting the All Star game....and then that pitcher gets his behind handed to him hard the next day or the same day (and even better when it's the Twins doing it). His co-hosts were suggesting maybe Archer or Gray deserved the honor and Harold, in his regular way, was like, 'come on, it's obvious Sale deserves it, what's wrong with you guys.'
Santana became a full time starter in the majors at 24 and had a CY Young at 25. Meyer is 25 and in the bullpen in the minors and has never had a cup of coffee in the majors. There are plenty of cases where it works, and plenty where it doesn't. It's easy to point to some examples where it works and ignore when it doesn't (and vice versus). The question is, which scenario turns out the most across the board?
