  1. As far as making players compete in ST for spots, I believe the Twins (and perhaps other teams) perpetuate that myth for PR reasons, but they've already decided what they are going to do before ST ever begins. Too often we've seen the players doing the best in ST lose these supposed battles.
  2. Dave Cameron has said the same thing, though with much more elaboration. Similar to the reasons I gave about an hour and a half ago on this thread,
  3. With even more teams having a shot at the playoffs, more teams are going to go for it at the deadline. Nowadays, there are more teams in the race than not. So now you have maybe 18-20 teams going for it and trying to find players to put them over the top from the remaining teams not in it, because they can't just go get someone in FA, and those other teams in the playoff hunt aren't going to give up anything, especially pitching. During the offseason, everyone gets a chance to trade with everyone else and the slate is clean. There's also FA where it's just about money. No one is getting desperate because they find themselves either dropping after a good start and they want to stop the bleeding, or are surprisingly in it and want to make sure they can stay there.
  4. It's not true. They talk about trade deadline premium for a reason.
  5. Berrios might not have even made it to the 6th, since he was over 60 pitches after 3 innings. I'd give the exact number of pitches (I think 64), but the stats pulled a Houdini.
  6. about a long as we've been hearing about Gibson being at the point of his career where he is just about to turn the corner ;-)
  7. Cubs have the best defense in baseball at 79 runs saved. They have only given up 470 earned runs, best in baseball. If they had just an average defense, 0 DRS, their ERA would jump from 3.10 to 3.60ish (if not higher). We have -50 runs saved and have given up 764 ER. I'd be amazed if a good defense COULDN'T cut a team ERA by AT LEAST 1/2 a run. Defense is still very under-rated even though it's a signficant portion of run prevention. Good read: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/200908344/cubs-defense-fueling-historic-run-prevention/
  8. Clinton said something interesting in the last couple days. She said her campaign has been more about pointing out how bad Trump would be and not enough of why she would actually be a good choice. Like she's been counting on making sure everyone knows she's the lesser of two evils as opposed to showing why she'd be an actual quality choice for President herself.
  9. If you remember, I was for trading Santana at the deadline where I believe he would have had his best value. If I knew for sure he'd stay healthy and keep performing like he has, I'd now say keep him till the 2017 trade deadline and trade him then. It's a gamble I'm not sure we should take if we get a quality offer. Then again, everyone is bemoaning the quality of starters available this offseason, so who knows what a very underpaid Santana gets. I'd be asking because, really, this rotation is the worst in the AL and 2nd worst in baseball even WITH 1/5 of it being a very good Santana.
  10. Tampa got Odorizzi, who has been good, and one year of very good Myers. Then they were able to trade Myers for some good prospects (Ott and Bauers) and some players who have been decent. There have been worse results.
  11. who is catching again? Bringing low pitches down instead of up?
  12. Well, I didn't say they hadn't signed starters in the past nor did I say they hadn't spent money in FA. Strawman, party of one...your table is ready. They have not gone out and signed a really good starter in many, many years. And when they did, the money situation in the game was way different. I'm talking about the kind of pitcher that requires a big money in today's game (though Santana was a good sign, no doubt, and if you want to count him fine. One). But I'm talking about the kind of pitcher who can be a real difference maker. And when I say big money, I don't mean compared to what we've spent in the past. That's not the same thing. But you're right, it is getting tiring having to make the same criticisms over the last 20+ years. And, you know, if we want to say it's bad idea to buy ace pitcher in FA, fine. I don't necessarily disagree with that. But then you need to trade quality prospects for established pitchers (which we won't do) OR we need to trade vets when their trade value is high for quality established pitchers or quality MLB ready pitchers(which we also won't do) OR we need to develop our own....which we can't seem to do.
  13. This offseason, the excuse will be, 'no really good starters available' AND/OR 'we're too far away from contending' (though many thought we would be contending this year and we did nothing to make the rotation better either, so who knows). When/if the time comes when there are really good starters available (those times are going to get more and more rare), the excuse will be 'we can't compete with the big revenue clubs for the top guys' and/or 'we are still too far away'.
  14. Yeah, I am optimistic about his future, but the point is that although his last 70 PAs show a line of ..297/.348/.672/, his line in his last 14 days, 43 PA (which are part of the 70 PA) is .186/.262/.395. So, like I said, he had a very good first week back. Like a ridiculous first week back. Like 4 HR, 4 doubles, and 4 singles in 27 PA. As we look at the two stat lines above, we can see how that first week back effected a 70 PA sample size. His approach does look better, but we are allowed to be realistic about a short sample size line that gets quoted, yeah?
  15. Cubs have played .600 ball the last 10 games and are 11-8 this month. Those blocks of time are actually below their season winning %. Cubs are every bit as good as their record says. No weaknesses and only one losing month.
  16. If we are waiting for that magical time where we get significantly better without improving any part of our team (especially the rotation), the point in time that it would be okay to trade prospects or sign FA to improve will keep getting backed up indefinitely. Or, we can do like we've done before, be on the cusp or actually good and determine that we're good enough so we don't need to get better. Always, ALWAYS a reason not to spend or trade prospects. At some point we're going to have to decide that it might be worth getting better sooner rather than waiting for it to come along at whatever new year has been determined we'll be contenders.
  17. I weep for our rotation if it's Santana, Berrios, Santiago, Gibson (actually started his downhill slide last year, which is why I recommended traded him last offseason), and one of the other internal options. Kind of how I was weeping due to rotation we decided to roll out with to start the season. Brain teaser: If Gibson was supposedly better in 2015 as than he was in 2014 (as some believe he was), but was horrible this year, how could it be because of the pitching coach? Because we've had the same pitching coach the last two seasons. Do players only get better on their own and when they get worse, it's all on the coaches? Seemed most were singing Allen's praises just last year when our pitching numbers got significantly better and now he's the reason we're as bad as we are?
  18. yeah, that catch made by Buxton last night was so very awesome! Lots of ground covered and it looked like his route was perfect, or very close to it. As far as his offense since he's been back, he had very good first week back (which makes his 70 PA since he's been back look great as is often the case in SSS) and has been meh since, but great plays like this here and there are very fun to watch.
  19. Or the idea we shouldn't trade any of our proven guys for prospects, but we should trade for proven top notch established MLB pitching (but without trading Rosario, Buxton, Sano, Kepler and Polanco). I've seen things like that said too. How are we going to get quality without trading any quality, exactly?
  20. Molitor's in-game management and comments make me believe he is very far from being an actual sabremetric guy.
  21. yeah, it is a rotation thread, but unfortunately defense is tied in with pitching in the whole prevention of runs part of the game. Plus, you know, this quote in the OP about our offense 'When the Twins inevitably drop their 100th game, they'll become the highest-scoring team with triple-digit losses of the last 10 years at least.' So I thought we should at least remember these are the guys playing what is charitably called defense out there too ;-) Of course, that's an interesting distinction when you consider there haven't really been too many teams that have lost 100 or more in the last 10 seasons, has there? :-)
  22. Does mentioning Scarlett Johansson offset the mention of Susan Dey?
  23. Yeah, if I'm the pitcher (or really anyone on the team), I'm not happy my 1B is high-fiving the opponent who just hit a HR off me/us.
