  1. Dodgers already got the Rays GM that did such a good job and the Cubs got their field manager.
  2. Or maybe they just believed/had faith in Ryan's opinion as opposed to those ridiculous defensive metrics :-)
  3. Our horrendous OF defense (and really overall defense) was an obvious flaw going into this season.
  4. that's what's been happening the last couple years. no surprise it's happening again. We had more than a full run difference between our ERA and FIP last year. Easily the largest difference in the majors.
  5. Ah, c'mon, OF defense can't possible be responsible for THAT kind of difference
  6. I didn't see the game, can you tell those of us who missed the game how the defense once again let us down?
  7. You have a good point. Patience and development.
  8. In fairness, I put a ' :-)' in the post. I'm just old school about my emoticons :-)
  9. I'd like to think the baseball IQ here is double (at least) than that of the strib.
  10. I still can't believe people thought the White Sox would be playoff contenders this year.
  11. That's been happening for awhile now. I don't know why anyone would give Mauer something to hit, myself. Not with the inconsistent unproven roster we have.
  12. I think I was joining in on the joke. Should have made that more clear. My bad.
  13. But hey, Hunter was aggressive with his swinging. Created an out, also didn't score anyone, and didn't extend an inning, but aggressive. :-)
  14. Might have done something different if he was given more than one pitch that deserved to be swung at. Hey, who has the first RBI of the season for the Twins and the 1st run scored? :-)
  15. So, if he if wasn't ready, why did Ryan recommend him?
  16. I forgot the 'man' part of that c'mon phrase. 'C'mon Maaan. ' My bad :-) So Smith wasn't Ryan's long time assistant? He wasn't the assistant GM, for like practically all of Ryan's first tenure as GM (like promoted to assistant GM two days after Ryan took over)? I can't see how he didn't report to Ryan. That seems odd. Also seems odd that enough grooming couldn't occur in 13 years and that Ryan would have suggested him if he didn't think Smith was ready.
  17. True, but when an organization trusts a guy like that Twins do Ryan, and Ryan has Smith as his right hand man/assistant GM, his recommendation along with a STRONG organizational tendency to promote from within, lends itself to believe that it was pretty much a situation where they picked the guy Ryan was grooming for the job. So yes, ownership had the final say, but really. C'mon. :-)
  18. I love this thread, PeanutsFromHeaven rocks! I would like to add that some people who love the numbers also can enjoy the game from the story-telling, player narrative view as well. As long as said narrative is even close to reality. To me, the game is majestic, magical, and something I will love forever. It was my first true love. If it was just numbers for me, I wouldn't watch it. But my passion for the game MAKES me want to dig deeper to have a better understanding of the game. It doesn't ruin the game for me, it enhances it.
  19. The Hunter situation was cause because Ryan didn't get him signed prior to the 2007 season. Smith had that doozy dropped in his lap compounded by the trade of Castillo that ticked off Hunter and Santana (and likely others) which likely didn't help negotiations with either player. While the Santana trade was bungled no doubt, it could have been avoided by having a longer extension in the first place or by Ryan himself trading him. I don't blame either on Smith. And Smith's failures were likely due to him not being really right for the job, even though he was hand-picked him to be the GM by Ryan himself.
  20. I'm guessing this happens soon or they just move Santana to CF and Escobar to shortstop, period. Our CF options aren't anything special right now until Buxton shows up.
  21. 'I'll give you Cuddyer but Kubel?Do you REALLY think we'd have been better off not letting him walk?' The comment was about players being allowed to walk as opposed to being traded, not whether or not it was okay to let it happen. Cuddyer and Kubel both fit the bill 'can you name one guy we've traded prior to hitting free agency that even 15% of the fan base was clamoring to keep?' I haven't done polling data from every Twins fan on even one player traded that fits that criteria much less all. Don't have that kind of money. I know a lot of fans I know didn't like Hardy being traded. Or Span. Or are you talking about right before they hit FA because if that's the case, how many are there in recent history that fits that exact situation? I was fine with Liriano being gone. Morny is one of my favorite Twins ever and one of my favorite players in the game. It hurt when he left but it was understandable at the time. Glad to see him doing well again. I don;t know anyone at all who thought it would have been a good idea to trade him three years earlier though.
