Good for him! He's been pitching well. He'd already been moved to shorter stints at Pensacola, so I suspected it might happen.

93-96, I believe - as a starter. Don't know if he has more in the tank for relief. Here's a video from last year: Sorry I put up a Graterol video. See the next comment!

A lot of us are hoping Graterol can come back healthy and help the Twins. I'm not sure if that's going to happen. I think the surprise candidate is Edwar Colina. He's like Brusdar Lite. Hard, sinking fastball and good breaking pitch. He might be the one to stoke the bullpen.

Front Page: Twins Acquire RHP Sam Dyson from Giants
dbminn replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's a great opportunity for Jaylin Davis. The Giants have one of the worst OF in baseball. They've been getting better play since Yastrzemski and Dickerson took over, but they still need depth. He might get a chance to play in the majors this year.- 206 replies

Sadly, I doubt any pitcher is going to be had at the right price. Too many teams believe they are in the wild card race. -
Article: Week in Review: Losing Ground
dbminn replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Since June 1, the Twins are 21-20 and the Indians are 28-12. The Twins haven't totally tanked - Cleveland has been on a tear. They've also had an easy schedule. Cleveland has played 13 games with teams above .500, but 9 each against Detroit and KC (add in 4 each with Baltimore and the Reds). The Twins have played 21 games played against teams above .500. This ratio will flip in August. Another reason for the mediocre record is lost time. Players on the IL since June 1: Cruz (3 days) Pineda (7) Cron (10) Gonzalez (10) Adrianza (11) Odorizzi (10) Rosario (19) Buxton (twice for a total of 22 days) Rosario and Buxton have hurt the most. The Twins are a much better team when their OF is intact. I'm not all that worried if the OF is healthy and the FO is willing and able to bolster the BP.- 40 replies

Baseball is hard. Jaylin Davis is figuring it out at the ripe age of 25. Enlow has hit another bump in the road. Royce Lewis tried to change the way he hits, suffered for a while, and now he's back. It's why I enjoy the game. A nod to Nick Gordon too. I hope better things are to come.

Article: Let's Make A Deal, Part II: Payroll
dbminn replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Good summary, Jeremy. The Twins will have plenty of salary room next year but it will get eaten pretty quick by two SP and a quality RP. I think 2021 will have roughly the same contract value dropping from the books. Cruz, Gonzalez, Perez and Cron will all become FA. By my Fergus Falls math, those four contracts add up to just short of $40M. While several arb-eligible players will take up some available money, the budget will already include slots for the 2 SP and RP noted above. They should have plenty of room to remain competitive.- 53 replies

Thanks, Seth. Jaylin Davis is on an absolute tear. Talk about progress not being linear! He's going to be hard to ignore if he keeps this up. He has 107 PA in AAA. It's a small sample size. He strikes out too much. But a slash of .343/.404/.758? Wow. And congrats to Zander Wiel. He's doing everything he can to reach the show. I hope he makes it, even if it isn't with the Twins.

Article: Week in Review: Second Half Statement
dbminn replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great article, Nick. Trevor May has a chance to be the next Taylor Rogers. He could fail - he walks too many hitters to be a sure thing. But he has shown the stuff to be a shutdown RP. Add one experienced back-end bullpen guy, and they should be in good shape. Could add another middle reliever too. Luis Arraez needs to get most of the reps at 2B. I don't say this lightly. Schoop is experienced, smart and a solid defender. OTOH, the Twins need someone getting on base, even if the opposing pitcher is really good. Arraez does that and he's only 22 years old. He doesn't seem overwhelmed by anything, so let's see what he can do. Love that he's turned on a few balls too.- 29 replies

Can't disagree with the top two. Odo, Gibson and Pineda next. May 6th, Perez 7th, Harper 8th, Duffey 9th. Gibson has pitched as an opener one game and relieved one. Take away the two IP and one start. He's 17 full starts and 96.1 IP. Odo is 17/88.2 and Perez is 15/86.1. Pineda is 17/92.2. It's between Gibson and Perez for most IP per start.

Agree. The struggles of Kirilloff amounted to an injured April and a poor May. He's been good since, despite another trip to the IL in June. OPS by month: May - .682 June - .910 July - 1.038

The TD staff has put together a fine list. The prospect depth is remarkable. For me, the most surprising story of the first half has been the AAA prospects. The 40th prospect, Sean Poppen, has two major league pitches. He'll get plenty of MLB chances as a RP before his career is over.JDavis is having a breakout type of year for a lower-ranked prospect. He could be a viable backup OF next season. He could be AAAA too, but his outlook is a lot brighter than it was in April.Littell can throw 96 out of the bullpen. Didn't see that coming.Arraez could end up an everyday 2B before his career is done (50 FV). Thorpe looked good in his first start. Not a lot of power but he can pitch.Rooker has scary power and he's getting to it.That's a lot of positive results from what is arguably the weakest part of the Twins system.

Zander Wiel has been on a nice little run. He's hit a lot more fly balls since arriving at Rochester. Strikeouts have come with the lift too (38%FB and 19.5%K in A+/AA to 51%/31% in AAA). With all those FB, he's hitting plenty of HR. If he can cut down Ks a little bit, he might have a chance to get to the majors. I cheer for guys like Wiel. I hope he takes the next step and gets a chance somewhere, even if it's not with the Twins.

Article: Luis Arráez: Hitting Machine
dbminn replied to Mariana Guzman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks for the article, Mariana! Cesar Tovar is a really good comp. You could add Tony Gwynn as far as style of hitter. Not saying Arraez is anywhere near the next Gwynn but his pitch selection and bat control remind me of him.- 32 replies

I agree. The best part of following the Twins minor league teams this year is the depth of prospects. There's always someone playing well. The first four in the Pensacola lineup looks strong - Blankenhorn, Kirilloff, Rortvedt and Diaz. All of them 21 or 22 years old. I have no doubt Kirilloff will start hitting as long as he's healthy. Great to see Enlow continue his good run. The Ft Myers rotation is solid.

General value of players has been an ongoing project at the Point of Pittsburgh website. FanGraphs used PoP data to derive a formula for prospect value. It's here, along with a list of values at the end of last season. Lower ranked prospect values are here. The problem with any general valuation is that a team with a chance of winning in the post-season will pay a premium because team revenues increase fast if a team can win playoff series. The other issue is the Future Value (FV) of the prospects. A young 45 FV player in the lower minors likely has both more upside and risk than an older 45 FV player. For example, Rortvedt and Wade are both ranked as 40 FV. Wade is pretty much at his peak while Rortvedt is still developing. For me, the younger prospect has more value.
