  1. Thank goodness you were here last week to put the shooting at the Sikh temple in perspective! Like I said, had there already been a Sikhism thread going on that day.... And that event was widely reported. This one, not so much and that is why I made my comment, is that okay?
  2. Does the ~97 million in player salaries listed reflect the trades/waivers changes to salary (if cash considerations were made and with the new team paying for the waiver player)? If not, is there a way post it short of giving a daily payroll update?
  3. Is there a way to remind or force our wonderful colleagues to get avatars up? Gray neutered bodies look horrible as placeholders. You could make it so one cannot register without imputing an avatar but that would mean less registration so I'm sure that won't happen. Any ideas on a way to remind/encourage this?

    Plouffe

Yeah, I agree. What he get, two games of rehab in and whithout a hit? How about at a week of rehab or hitting the cover off the ball in rehab, whichever happens first before returning.
  5. Is this just a restatement of the news or are you making an implication about the issue with one whacko? Just thought that this would be what you all were posting about, and surprised to find you weren't given today's events. Just want to make sure anyone who checks in on this knows that it happened as it was not widely covered by major news networks. If the guy had brought in a Burger King bag I wouldn't have gone to the trouble of beginning a thread here on the shooter at all, just that this shooter happened to be politically motivated, unlike other recent and past shootings, and Chik-fil-a appears to be at the center of those motivations, and here I already knew a chik-fil-a thread was rolling... so there you have all the permutations.
  6. I saw the new posts thinking you all were remarking on today's domestic terrorism (shooting) at the Family Research Council, where the shooter carried a Chik-fil-a bag and opened fire in the name of tolerance -- for homosexual marriage. That Chik-fil-a is everywhere these days.
  7. Just going to comment on your batting order: why would you bat Parmelee in front of Doumit?
  8. Maybe this is Devries' final audition. If his ERA balloons over 5, send him down and put Swarzak in his spot.
  9. Not really. If you look at the Tampa Bay model (of pretty much continuous rebuilding) you do not need a high budget (or a high revenue - their revenue is awful) to compete. But it means making some unpopular decisions in trading and letting go "star players" and getting young stars in trades and the draft. Part of their success was built on the previous free agent compensation model. It will be interesting to see how this will go ahead with the CBA changes. I agree with you that it's possible for other teams right now, but I was talking about the Twins specifically, with big contracts to a couple guys. The major point, though, is that there must be some baseline ~50-60 M if one wants to even try to field a competitive team, for any team.
  10. Don't you mean "sold one year ago" -- here we go....
  11. The problem with the front office payroll philosophy of using ~50% of revenue is a mathematical one: If the team sucks in consecutive years, lowering revenues, then payroll also decreases making it more difficult to pay for and keep players that will turn it around. Let's say 200 million in revenue in year one, therefore a 100 M payroll in year two. If that year two team sucks, then may fall to 160 M, therefore creating an 80 M payroll in year three. You can see that if the team doesn't begin to win and revenues increase, using this formula alone is absurd because it would lead to a negligible payroll. There must be a baseline (I'd say 80 M) where spending beyond is proportional to revenue, but anything less means you have a payroll/plan for continued failure and decreased revenue coming back.
  12. A small mistake at the beginning is a big mistake at the end.
  13. I like the move, even if it's an idle threat/message -- at least some message was sent. Let it be know that with the lack of FA SS available this year that Florimon, Dozier and Escorbar (and perhaps Carroll and Casilla) will have to compete and win a starting spot and spot on the 25 man. Even if this is a small message, it's a start in the correct direction for getting good competitive players earning spots (or at least beating out others for a spot).
  14. Just my 2 cents, maybe other agree: I don't care for Picture/story scrolling headline deal at the top of the homepage. To me it looks clumsy and I've never once click on the different pics/stories or linked to those stories since I can just scroll down the home page and find them there with the beginning sentences of the article/blog. I liked having the top of the homepage for the "newest" or "most compelling" story at the time, rather than a visual table of contents of some of the stories below. I'm guessing it was to put there to increase traffic on those stories from the homepage, but I'd rather see it go. Thanks for you consideration, UR.
  15. Nishi was contagious it appears.
  16. Jamey making several errors on routine plays lately. With the Plouffe error before, it's easy to see how making errors is demoralizing and deflating to a team. Carroll will hopefully the utility guy next season.
  17. Any reason given for Mauer getting back-to-back days at 1B, Morneau at DH? They winding Mauer down at C to save his legs for the future?
  18. In everyday life it really isn't. Most racist charges are purely fictitious inventions, just like the charge against Bremer.
  19. I'd prefer the following: Start Casilla every day at second on a 2 year/2.5 million deal. Let Dozier and Escobar compete for SS next year with the other starting in AAA. Carroll is the utility guy, but have him compete against Casilla for starting 2B. Also, see if Mastro can play second this season. If not, keep in as the 4th OF/pinch runner.
  20. The other 10% being non-closeted racists? This made me chuckle, thank you snepp.
  21. If any post deserves being taken down and poster being banned (which I don't support BTW), this seems to reach that threshold. Got any support for these claims on passive racisim? Do you study Critical Race Theory or are you just throwing stuff out there?
  22. From Etymologyonline: property http://www.etymonline.com/graphics/dictionary.gifc.1300, "nature, quality," later "possession" (a sense rare before 17c.), from an Anglo-Fr. modification of O.Fr. propriete (12c., Fr. propreté), from L. proprietatem (nom. proprietas) "ownership, property, propriety," lit. "special character" (a loan-translation of Gk. idioma), noun of quality from proprius "one's own, special" (see proper). Propertied "holding property" is from 1760. Hot property "sensation, a success" is from 1958. "One's own" as in the Twins' own player is appropriate. The word "own" in this context also can imply belonging or property... <<<gasp>>>. Catch any other dog whistles today?
  23. He's ready for the bigs, just needs to keep his head and take (and get through) his lumps. I can see him as a strong #3/4 for us in the future. He'll figure it out.
  24. What...the....hell GPA? Horrible, just horrible.
