    While it sort of explains the Recker acquisition, the FO still messed it up, in my opinion. Essentially, we lost Haley in order to keep Recker over Rohlfing. I think I'd rather have Haley and Rohlfing than Recker; so unless the Braves were insistent that we take Recker in order to get Garcia, I don't understand the move.

    As for the double switch controversy, let's just add the DH to the NL. Problem solved. For pace of play, give the pitcher 20 seconds from gloving the ball to throwing the pitch, so long as the batter is also in the box. Allow a batter one timeout per AB, and prohibit him from stepping out of the box in between pitches. Limit catchers to three mound visits per game, with a 30 second limit. Starters are limited to one trip from a pitching coach, relievers as a whole get one visit from the pitching coach. Failure by the batter to observe the rules is a strike, failure by the pitcher to observe the rules is a ball, and an extra visit by a catcher or coach is an automatic walk where every base runner advances a base. If the bases are empty, it's a two-base walk, to ensure visits aren't used as intentional walks.

    In the standings section, are you trying to show how far the Tigers and White Sox are behind the Twins? Because the Tigers are indeed 4 back of us, 8.5 of the Indians, but the Sox are 9 back of the Twins, 13.5 of the Indians.

    The fact that we've had issues in the past with trading for NL pitchers should not color our decision making process at all. Should we pass on acquiring Kershaw or Scherzer because they're from the NL? Each player should be based on their merits/similar players, and league played in is not a significant enough differentiator.

    It behooves the Twins to start getting an idea on how many legitimate options we have for next years rotation. We have 3 locks in Santana, Berrios, and Mejia. Santiago is probably gone, and we shouldn't count on Hughes being able to ever start again. That leaves Gibson, Slegers, Jorge, Gonsalves, and Romero as guys who could potentially contribute next year. I think it makes sense to start finding out if the potential is real or not, rather than experiment with a bunch of has-beens, and never-weres.

    Your strikeout is worse than a double play take is awful. Let's say 75% of the time a dp ball actually becomes a dp, 20% of the time, only one out is recorded, and 5% of the time, no outs are recorded. The expected outs for a ball hit at a middle infielder in a dp situation is therefore 1.7--which is obviously far worse than the worst case scenario of one out from the strikeout.

    At this point, you can't really count on Santana to give you 5-6 ace-level performances in the playoffs. He's just not performing as a 1 right now. This team, while fun, is not ready to compete in the playoffs. I hope they prove me wrong, but if they do, I hope it's done organically. Next year is the year we start getting serious.

    If it's Park, Palka, Murphy, Minier--or someone of that ilk, I'm good. If it's Jorge, Curtiss, Wade, Palacios--I'm not good.

    I think you and I might have different definitions of contention. I'm inclined to believe the Twins aren't truly in contention for anything more than a division round loss at best, even with a trade upgrade. I don't want to dilute our system so we can lose to Houston in 4 games instead of 3.

    True. However, making a trade MIGHT not improve the team today OR tomorrow.

    I'm sure they care, I'm saying they shouldn't. Build a winner, and it will all work out. I would hate to think that our supposedly advanced and analytical front office is making moves to avoid negative media attention, rather than working to build a sustainable winner. Not sacrificing the system today makes the team better tomorrow, which should be the goal, since we're not, you know, a juggernaut currently.

    I think in fairness just meant if you're going to make an error (which every player will), making one that doesn't cost you an out or a run in a game you're winning by 5 in the late innings is the best time to do it.

    You didn't only say that, that's just the part I responded to. You said they would get blasted by the media, I said who cares? As for upsetting the players, while I care about that, I would hope our players would be savvy enough to understand that, according to fangraphs, we have a 17.3% chance to make the playoffs this year, but by buttressing our farm system, we can raise those odds in future years. I'm sure Altuve hated playing on 90 loss teams for 3-4 years, but I'm also sure that being on a team that currently has 99.9% odds to win its division, and will be around 90% odds to make the playoffs every year for the next 5-7 years makes up for that.

    I think a good comparison here is a QB that heaves the ball towards the end zone from his own 40 yard line with 1 second left in the half, resulting in an interception in the end zone. It's clearly a throw he wouldn't make under other circumstances, and while it goes down as an interception, it doesn't really impact his team's chances to win. Grossman's error didn't turn an out into a non-out. It didn't allow a run to score. Therefore, in a game the Twins were winning by 5 in the late innings, it's not particularly harmful--unlike Polanco's error on Thursday that allowed the Astros to continue a rally that ultimately won them the game. Both were errors, but with vastly different impacts and importance.

    Who's to say your best players don't perform terribly? What if bad Berrios shows up, and he exits in the third after giving up 7 runs? What if Sano puts up a 1 for 11 with 7 k's? We shouldn't base odds for postseason success on what-ifs and could-bes.

    Who cares if they get blasted by the media? 5-6 years ago the media blasted the Astros for openly trying to lose games. Now they're one of the two best teams in the league, and the envy of 25ish organizations. The goal should be to build a team that has a sustained window of opportunity, not dump chips at queen jack suited, simply because you've been getting a lot of deuce seven.

    Sell if you get the right offer, stand pat if you don't. I'm not interested in shortening the length of our window just to try to open it a couple inches more for a team that is not as good as it's record. Especially when you consider that it's not a guarantee whomever we trade for works out. If the kids can drag us to a playoff berth on their own, great. But this offseason is the time to make your moves, in an attempt to legitimately compete in 2018.

    I can't blame Hughes for sticking around when he makes about $64k a day. But I do wish he would feel guilty about it, and give it back. Although there's obviously little guarantee ownership will choose to reinvest.
