If RB gets the opening day nod, does that mean he’s the game thread ace, or does it mean that the true ace just wants to game thread in Puerto Rico? Also, am I crazy or should Buxton bat 8th instead of 9th, to avoid clogging bases in front of him and help turn the lineup over. A simple “Yes” will suffice.

Article: A Breakout or Breakthrough for Sano
Cap'n Piranha replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Except his strikeouts might be directly tied to his power. Perhaps Sano crushes the ball because when he hits it, he hits it hard. But in order to hit it hard, he has to swing hard, which makes it more likely he’ll miss. Which would mean cutting down on strikeouts is more likely to result in a 270/370/450 slash. The question is, would you rather live without the homeruns, or with the strikeouts? -
Article: Report From The Fort: A Market Squeezed
Cap'n Piranha replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree that GM’s who understand it’s better to pay a 25 year old 500k for 80% of the production you get from a 30 year old making 10M is a big part of the equation not being addressed. That will only change when that 20% becomes the difference between 85 and 90 wins, rather than 75 or 80. Alternatively, MLB could expand the playoffs to 8 teams, and do actual series, rather than one gamers. Do best of 3 in the first round, best of 5 in the second, and best of 7 for the LCS and WS. This gives more teams not only playoff berths, but a more meaningful playoff experience, which makes the 20% referenced above impactful to a lot more teams. -
Article: Brian Dozier: I'll Be A Free Agent
Cap'n Piranha replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think the x-factor in whether or not the Twins bring back Dozier is Royce Lewis. If Royce is holding his own in AA at the end of the year, 2 of the Twins’ top 3 prospects will be middle infielders hitting the majors in 2019. Add in Polanco, who had a better OPS in the second half than any year of Dozier’s career, and shelling out 8 figures a year for an aging guy whose best tool is power, yet refuses to bat anywhere but lead off, becomes a fairly silly proposition. -
Article: Twins To Sign DH Logan Morrison
Cap'n Piranha replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree that Robbie should remain the fourth outfielder. Having a guy on your bench with a .360 OBP is a valuable thing. Robbie suffered no drop off to that OBP when pinch hitting last year, but he actually was hurt by an artificially low babip last year. Regression to the mean would give us our best bench option since Jim Thome, and a good option if anything happens to Buxton/Rosario/Kepler. -
If Odorizzi’s peripherals we’re down last year because his injuries were lingering (2 separate DL stints), or because he was pitching himself into shape, AND he’s now healthy, I’m good with the assumption he’s a likely bounce back candidate. The low price of a guy who, through no fault of his own, projects as a utility player at best for us is also nice. That being said, if Odorizzi is truly what he showed last year, we just got a guy that’s going to make it harder to start evaluating Gonsalves and Romero at the major league level. If that’s what happens, any price was too high to pay.

My opinion can’t be formed without qualifiers in years and dollars. 5 years and $100M? Hard pass, thanks Mr. Dozier, don’t let the door hit you on the way out. 4 years and $60M? Welcome aboard. With pace of play, it has to be asked—if baseball is struggling to attract younger fans due to the length of the games, it’s going to have a tough time remaining relevant in the next 50-100 years. Therefore, the question is whether something should be changed to save it, or preserved to lose it.

It’s about the contract. You would find many willing trade partners for May, Duffey, Rogers, Mejia, and Kiriloff, as well as many other Twins not on this list. You would find none for Mayer.

I think we all thought the Twins would be playing meaningless games in September. Turns out we were right, just in the complete opposite way.

With the win last night, it is now guaranteed that Sunday the 1st will not be our last game of the season. Game 163 is now the worst case scenario.

Article: MIN 10, DET 4: Deja Vu All Over Again
Cap'n Piranha replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Busenitz looks like he's going to be a key piece in the bullpen. Therefore, I'm not sure why he pitched yesterday, after pitching Saturday, when the Twins had an 8 run lead and 13 other relievers they could turn to.- 15 replies

Since the break, Buxton is fourth among all center fielders in WAR, and is actually outhitting Mike Trout (Buck has a better average and slug, with a much lower OBP). He also has only two fewer homers than Trout despite 68 fewer plate appearances. In other words, if Buxton hits like this the entire year next year, while holding his advantage in baserunning and defense, he will in all likelihood be a better player than Mike Trout.

Two big moves make the Twins a legit contender next year. 1--sign Moustakas or Hosmer (especially if there is no qualifying offer attached) 2--trade Gordon, two out of Gonsalves/Romero/Thorpe, and a bullpen prospect TB likes for Archer. Your rotation is Archer, Santana, Berrios, Mejia, Gibson Your lineup is Dozier, Mauer, Hosmer/Moustakas, Sano, Rosario, Kepler, Buxton, Polanco, Castro/Garver Your bullpen is still an issue, but the easiest one to fix, and as long as it's not a dumpster fire, 95 wins is a real possibility.

Not surprised by the Minier release at all. It took him 5 years to get to low A, where he posted a .551 OPS. It's the nature of baseball, there's always going to be flameouts. If he was smart with his $1.4M, he'll be just fine.

Article: MIN 6, CHW 4: Polanco Does it All
Cap'n Piranha replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
On the scoring of a player getting thrown out at second--if you can't execute a good slide, you don't get credit for a double. Falvine might need to abduct Hildenberger for a game or two in order to keep Molitor from using him. If the Twins were willing to let Gibson have a start last week against the Sox, I don't know why that would be different after two pretty good starts. Finally, these game recaps keep getting better and better. I'd be surprised to find out any other site was producing this level of quality. The sincerest of cap tips to you Tom.- 47 replies

I don't think you are a fan of Gonsalves, as you're being ridiculously critical. He just moved up a level, it's reasonable to get an adjustment period. As for the stats you provided, the big one that stands out to me is BABIP. A BABIP over .400 is not sustainable, so his one game WHIP is inflated. And you conveniently didn't mention his stellar 1.5 ERA, or 6/1 k/bb ratio. I wonder why.

With strong seasons by Lewis and Javier, along with a passel of competent middle infielders already in the bigs (Dozier, Polanco, Escobar, and Adrianza), in calling it now--Nick Gordon gets traded this offseason in an attempt to get frontline starting pitching.

Article: CWS 4, MIN 3: Twins Bullpen Blows Lead
Cap'n Piranha replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
His 7th inning was a bit shaky, Molitor may have thought he was running out of gas. In the bullpen, right now, I trust no one. However, I distrust some a lot more, but am much more optimistic about potentially one day trusting some others.- 42 replies

Let's say the Twins lose 1-0 tonight, with Gibson going the distance. The run scores when a runner gets on by a passed third strike, a steal of second, takes third on a grounder to first, and then scores on a fly out where the outfielder throws up the line. Is it still Gibson/Falvine's fault?
