I think we all thought the Twins would be playing meaningless games in September. Turns out we were right, just in the complete opposite way.

With the win last night, it is now guaranteed that Sunday the 1st will not be our last game of the season. Game 163 is now the worst case scenario.

Article: MIN 10, DET 4: Deja Vu All Over Again
Cap'n Piranha replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Busenitz looks like he's going to be a key piece in the bullpen. Therefore, I'm not sure why he pitched yesterday, after pitching Saturday, when the Twins had an 8 run lead and 13 other relievers they could turn to.- 15 replies

Since the break, Buxton is fourth among all center fielders in WAR, and is actually outhitting Mike Trout (Buck has a better average and slug, with a much lower OBP). He also has only two fewer homers than Trout despite 68 fewer plate appearances. In other words, if Buxton hits like this the entire year next year, while holding his advantage in baserunning and defense, he will in all likelihood be a better player than Mike Trout.

Two big moves make the Twins a legit contender next year. 1--sign Moustakas or Hosmer (especially if there is no qualifying offer attached) 2--trade Gordon, two out of Gonsalves/Romero/Thorpe, and a bullpen prospect TB likes for Archer. Your rotation is Archer, Santana, Berrios, Mejia, Gibson Your lineup is Dozier, Mauer, Hosmer/Moustakas, Sano, Rosario, Kepler, Buxton, Polanco, Castro/Garver Your bullpen is still an issue, but the easiest one to fix, and as long as it's not a dumpster fire, 95 wins is a real possibility.

Not surprised by the Minier release at all. It took him 5 years to get to low A, where he posted a .551 OPS. It's the nature of baseball, there's always going to be flameouts. If he was smart with his $1.4M, he'll be just fine.

On the scoring of a player getting thrown out at second--if you can't execute a good slide, you don't get credit for a double. Falvine might need to abduct Hildenberger for a game or two in order to keep Molitor from using him. If the Twins were willing to let Gibson have a start last week against the Sox, I don't know why that would be different after two pretty good starts. Finally, these game recaps keep getting better and better. I'd be surprised to find out any other site was producing this level of quality. The sincerest of cap tips to you Tom.- 47 replies

I don't think you are a fan of Gonsalves, as you're being ridiculously critical. He just moved up a level, it's reasonable to get an adjustment period. As for the stats you provided, the big one that stands out to me is BABIP. A BABIP over .400 is not sustainable, so his one game WHIP is inflated. And you conveniently didn't mention his stellar 1.5 ERA, or 6/1 k/bb ratio. I wonder why.

With strong seasons by Lewis and Javier, along with a passel of competent middle infielders already in the bigs (Dozier, Polanco, Escobar, and Adrianza), in calling it now--Nick Gordon gets traded this offseason in an attempt to get frontline starting pitching.

Article: CWS 4, MIN 3: Twins Bullpen Blows Lead
Cap'n Piranha replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
His 7th inning was a bit shaky, Molitor may have thought he was running out of gas. In the bullpen, right now, I trust no one. However, I distrust some a lot more, but am much more optimistic about potentially one day trusting some others.- 42 replies

Let's say the Twins lose 1-0 tonight, with Gibson going the distance. The run scores when a runner gets on by a passed third strike, a steal of second, takes third on a grounder to first, and then scores on a fly out where the outfielder throws up the line. Is it still Gibson/Falvine's fault?

Not really, CR had Palacios and Davis earlier in the year, they're now in Fort Myers. And there's a ton of guys doing really well in E-Town right now who will be ready for Low A next year.

Very encouraging start from Royce Lewis. At this point, it seems unlikely he would be promoted to E-Town, which makes me wonder; will he start in E-Town next year, or will the Twins challenge him, and move him right to Low A?

Article: Twins Trade Kintzler To Nationals
Cap'n Piranha replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To make the playoffs the Twins have to outperform at least 2 out of the CLE, KC, NYY, BOS, and TB group, to say nothing of the Mariners (1.5 up) and the Angels (only 0.5 back). Even with Kintzler, Garcia, and a couple more relievers, I don't think that happens. So rather than finish 84-78, and miss the wild card by 7ish games and the division by 9ish, then get nothing for Garcia, nothing for Kintzler, AND have a weaker farm system, we very much improved our depth, and can still sign both Garcia and Kintzler if we want. This was absolutely the right thing to do. -

Cap'n Piranha replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Because if the player isn't actually hurt, you need their cooperation (perhaps a better word would be collusion) to make that move. If Polanco is not hurt, and not interested in a trip to Rochester, he or his agent can simply call foul on an attempted DL placement. That being said, it also doesn't make any sense to avoid playing Polanco to try an win, since we're calling the season anyways. Let him play and develop, or play and help us lose, either way is a win for the team at this point.- 67 replies

Littell is 21, and doing extremely well in High A and AA. Ynoa is 19, and struggling (although SSS does apply) in advanced rookie ball. This is a very rudimentary analysis, but I'd say Littell>Ynoa, so to get Enns as well is a very nice move by Falvine. Unless the Braves are in love with Ynoa, they have to be pissed.

Sell Santana if you get any kind of reasonable offer, since he's not likely to repeat this performance next year.
