Twins Bullpen Falters Because of What Bryan Did
REPETE replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Who’s to blame for this? Management. Colome keeps going out there in the 9th. Why? IDK. Rogers, Duffey, Robles, and Alcala should be the closers (If they’re going for multi-closer thing, which is fine). They all throw hard. Thielbar is fine as a setup guy (NOT as a guy to stop the bleeding). Outside of those five, who do we have? Colome sucks as I already said. Brandon Waddell has not looked good. Dobnak is fools gold, always has been. Anderson? We haven’t seen him in the majors yet. Maybe he could be good? IDK. This is a well thought out piece pointing out many faults in all layers of management within the organization. But no, I'm pretty sure it's Bryan... -
Will 2021 Finally Be the Year For Big Mike?
REPETE replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Texas Rangers are opening at full capacity with no common sense, and we're all going to die!!!! Oh, sorry. That's the other thread that went off the rails.. Watching Big Mike, he gives up 2 runs in the first 2 innings, looking bad. Then it's suddenly the 7th, he's coming out, and the opposition has 2, maybe 3 runs. His performances don't look dominating, but the results are indisputable. I think he'll be fiine, if he can stay out of his own way. His biggest enemy is himself, either taking more banned substances to control weight, or getting too heavy, and pulling something. If so, he'll be a very solid #3, perhaps #2. -
Report from The Fort: Leading Questions
REPETE replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The trouble with that philsophy is what we saw last year: a bunch of solo home runs. Dingers are great, but as Bert (so often) told us, solo HRs aren't going to beat you. We need some guys on base for the mashers, to make those 3 run dingers!- 22 replies

I concur with this, especially the unchecked at-home binge drinking. Open the ballparks, so our binge-drinking is held in check, limited to 6 1/2 innings!

The only flaw with this theory is, if/when all those regular players do suffer injuries and are out for weeks/months, it suddenly means all those DH options are playing in the field everyday, and your DH becomes Jake Cave on a daily basis. I, for one, would much rather see a true DH. For that period when the DH is out, or needs a rest, that's the time to filter in these other guys. I would much rather see a really good hitter playing DH day in/day out, hitting somewhere between 3rd-5th slot, than going back to the days of guys like Jake Cave hitting 7th-8th as your DH.

Opinion: Manfred Proposes a Playoff Restructure
REPETE replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Personally, I hated the 1st wildcard addition, as it really didn't "punish" them in any way. Adding the 2nd WC team meant both had to play in, so I was all in favor of that. Adding even more WC teams does nothing for me. An 82 win team getting hot at the end of the year can be dangerous, so what's the point of 162 games then? Plus, adding another level to the playoffs? Won't we be finishing the WS sometime around Nov 7? I already hate it when cold weather teams (other than if MN were to win) are in the WS, as the boys of summer look like the Michelin Man standing in the OF. -
Twins Ready to Compete for Best Bullpen in Baseball
REPETE replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm excited about the potential, but history has proven that bullpens are fickle. The best laid plans for dominance often turn into flops. Guys that were great last year, suddenly can't find the strike zone, or when they do, the ball finds the cheap seats. Hopefully these weren't career years for these guys!- 8 replies

MIN 6, TB 4: Cruz Bails Out Another Bunting Blunder
REPETE replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I concur, there is a place for bunting & SBs. However, the lack of execution is obvious. These guys just don't practice it anymore. How many times did we see Joe Mauer try to lay down a bunt for an easy hit, and could never get it done? And that's a guy with a great eye! Asking guys to bunt in this era, unless they're NL pitchers or little fast guys that have to hit it twice to get it out of the park, is futile... and frustrating!- 87 replies

HOU 7, MIN 1: Foregone Conclusion
REPETE replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Which makes more sense; A) start a AAA pitcher against Baltimore, and lose a game against a terrible opponent, then use a good pitcher against Verlander, and lose 3-1, or: Sweep Baltimore, and throw Stewart out there against Verlander? The Orioles may be bad, but Stewart vs O's could've easily ended in the same result as Stewart vs Astros -

Why don't they address replay? I can't stand watching the manager stand at the top step, while the umpires stare at him for 30 seconds while some other coach watches TV. I was in favor of replay if it meant not having to watch Gardy argue (incorrectly time & time again) for 2 minutes. The "Gardy Replay Rule" should eliminate time consuming arguments, not take up more time by waiting 30 seconds just to go to commercial because they're not going to challenge. Like the additional roster spot, hate the 3 Batter minimum. That fundamentally changes strategies. Plus, a RP that "just doesn't have it" can blow a lead pretty easily in 3 batters.

The trouble with that idea is it's not a level playing field for the owners. Giving everything to the players is bad for the sport, as shorter service times to FA reward the big markets with big TV contracts, and make it even more difficult for the medium/small markets to compete. That's the last thing I want to see! I'd love to see a hard salary cap maximum, and minimum. The NFL (for all it's flaws) have the right idea. Almost every team spends close to the same amount, but players don't get 10 year guaranteed contracts. For every guy not getting paid "what they should", there's guys getting overpaid because they're no longer performing (I've seen Pujols & Hughes mentioned sparingly). Why it took baseball owners so long to figure this out is beyond me. So if players want faster FA/Arbitration, then no more guaranteed contracts. But we still need a hard cap (IMHO).

Wow, this is a very slippery slope MLB is heading towards. In every case above, the words "police were called" ring out, except for one who's career was basically over anyway. Not taking anything away from said victim, this is dangerous. I'm not saying I do or don't believe her, as it's really immaterial what I think. But a suspension/penalty of any length in a case that's year's old with absolutely no corroboration scares me. This opens the door for any ex-wife, ex-girlfriend, or anyone with a grudge to start making accusations for personal reasons. Again, I'm not at all saying that's what happened in this case. I'm just saying, Sano's looks to be a precedent setting decision, and if it comes out with any length or severity, this opens up a Pandora's box for people with ill-will.

I'm a huge Mauer apologist, yelling at people who booed him during the lean years, but c'mon... Loyalty at $184m? "Loyalty would've been Joe taking $15m/year for 8 years, vs $23m. That was certainly no "hometown discount". Again, I say that as a fan of Joe, and think, if he has a good 2018, we bring him back, but only for about $6m. THAT would be loyalty.

Kenley Jansen: Only 6 NL Teams are Trying this Season
REPETE replied to Vanimal46's topic in Other Baseball
What needs to happen is a complete overhaul. Baseball owners have huge disparities in revenue opportunities (compared to other sports). Example: Twins TV contract. High draft picks get a nice bonus, but everyone down the line is playing in the minors for peanuts. So when do they get paid? After 2-6 years in the minors, followed by 6 productive seasons. But small/mid market teams need that control, as that's their "window". They may overpay for a FA during that window, but it makes no sense to give them 5-8 years of big $$, knowing they won't be competitive for the last 3 years of that deal. 1-2 guys getting big money, then not producing, or the rest of the team not developing as hoped, hamstring a small/mid team into 5 years of mediocrity at best. If players want more money on the front end, they have to agree that long term contracts are not guaranteed. Give players earlier options for FA, and the Twins become even less competitive, as the big spenders get the quality years out of Buxton & Sano. Small market teams need young players at cheap salaries, before they get wooed away by the big $. Look at Houston. Otherwise, the small market teams truly become the farm system of the big boys.
