  1. Nicks. Honest Question: Did Glen have a real justifiable argument when he brought his claim? I beleive the 2008-2010 Glen was the picture of a struggling pitcher. If Hicks gets sent down for not playing well and retains his service time, isn't that fair?
  2. I wanted the Twins to extend his service time another year, but I can't really complain that they'd give him his shot. He earned it. Mastro's team mentality is certainly impressive.
  3. I don't care for his batting order and the still fresh treadmarks on a selected group of players. I'm guessing he thinks this motivates some players (I'll never know either his reasoning for that or whether it actually helped someone). All I know (think?) is that he managed to win a few division titles with teams that I believe shouldn't have won (even in the Central), he's a public figure in Twin Territory that is pretty much a team mascot in itself, and he seems to be well-respected/regarded within his organization. Like it or lump it, if he loses less than 90, I think he gets a new contract. I really wouldn't mind...wish he would change his mind on the two-hole though, that one really burns me.
  4. He wears a sweater vest, what did you expect? But seriously, he's being a tad ridiculous. Just a smidge.
  5. If you aren't being sarcastic, I could not disagree with you more.
  6. John, this is one of those decisions where makeup and scrappiness might actually mean something (in addition to his FIP ). I would strongly consider the trade with a good signoff from my scouts, if he has a real willingness to put in the time, and if we could get him for a light trade-off (middling prospect(s) in the Minors). That being said, he would be a Twin till 2016 you say, but would this give us many years of him being good. All told, I can't imagine the Tigers would trade him for what I would offer, but it's worth a shot to make a call.
  7. Thanks all for the advice on getting to watch the game, it actually comes down to me being cheap. River, I have classic cable (below basic/without the HD receiver). I've never upgraded because I get my fix on FSN and Midco (I really don't watch much else...children and work take up most of my other free time). I probably just need to break down and get the upgrade. Oh yeah, go Sano and UND hockey!
  8. Small sample size? WBC-like exhibition competition? Other detractions? All probably valid comments, but people are excited because they want to hold on to something good this offseason for pitching. And as to Jim C's comments, I hope Joe would know to call the old number 2, he rolled over one .
  9. and I don't get FSN+ (just FSN). Totally crappy. Good luck Sano (please someone start a game thread!)
  10. Dave and Lev, can we perhaps agree on a policy of "Be excellent to each other." Man I hope the membership of this site is old enough to get this.
  11. I realize VD's post comes from a good place/intent (read in: I'm not overlooking your point), but I think the rules are pretty simply to follow. Further, I read quite a bit of what's posted on the forums (I don't post a whole lot) and, correct me if I'm wrong, but the rules were created to keep the forums away from the garbage you read on most comment boards. I don't think anyone wants that hot mess. Manners matter folks, and we can be civil to one another...even if we disagree. It's far better to educate than to derogate. After reading the content from these gentlemen for years, I've come to trust their judgment on passing out blocks, quite frankly, they probably passed on some bad judgment when the poster typically provides reasoned commentary. In the end, I've come to learn much more about baseball reading the forums, and that's why I come back (also the good kind of snark is hil-ar-i-ous...seriously folks there are some gems in the forums). Finally, I read the likely offending comment yesterday, and while the response was probably pretty accurate, it was a clear violation of the rules. A simple response could have been. "I can't disagree with you more." I wish I would have posted the same.
  12. Seth, my initial inclination was to post pretty much what you did, but Go-Go had a marketable increase in Slugging%/HR this past year. While I certainly wouldn't use his trade as a knock against the Twins (still believe this was a very good trade IMO), there is some credence to him bringing value with his bat (ironically, his UZR and other defensive metrics seem to be declining). Admittedly, I don't follow the Brewers much. Thoughts?
  13. I apologize. I should have said "Vamos, hombre!"
  14. I can understand the positions of Snepp and the RP completely--probably more so if I had paid any money for a public stadium--but being that I didn't, if I put myself in the management or ownership chair I can't say I would have done things too differently (other than spending a little more time looking at Marcum, Saunders, Jackson, [insert other bridge pitcher here], I can admit to much frustration in that). In the end, it's a business, and I think they are doing a pretty good job of trying to rebuild. Would I do things a little differently, sure, but I wouldn't have traded for Scott Diamond and even with regression, that was a great trade. Outside the stadium issue, I don't understand the anger. I could go on, but that's probably pointless, I'm not trying to convince someone to change thier mind. As to the Joe Mauer angst, some people can't help themselves. However, if a person really spent an hour scouring the journal articles about this work ethic, training, and otherwise, and they still hold that belief; well sir, some people are always trying to ice skate uphill....
  15. At the risk of being inflamatory, is this satire/sarcasim, or just plain bad taste? If your serious, then I completely understand...as a North Dakotan, we don't understand half of the Minnesota dialect. That's probably why not many of us have made it to the bigs yet. I probably should ask Andy Leer. As they say in football....Come on, man.
  16. Seth, the quote about him "not being in the best shape" is something I've missed on. Any elaboration on your end/things you've heard?
  17. Sweet Drew drives in a run. Somebody get him a roster spot....wait a second. /Satire font
  18. It would be fun to beleive that Eddie could maintain this level in the regular season, but Dozier it is.
  19. 1+, ABJ Great for the homerun today (no so much the swings and misses). From when I've seen him play (about three or four game), he seems like he has all the talent and athletic ability, but he's hacking (kind of reminds me of Luke Hughes' plate approach, which is why a few spring training home runs wouldn't surprise me). The defense is ready, if he can just control the strike zone, he'll be ready. I guess we'll see. In 2011 John Sickels said (Minnesota Twins Top 20 Prospects for 2012 - Minor League Ball): "5) Joe Benson, OF, Grade B-: Impressive power/speed tools and should get a shot at a major league job in 2012. Still fights the strike zone, could be a 20-15 player but could also struggle in batting average and OBP departments."
  20. I want to be high on Benson, but that K-rate sticks out like a sore thumb. Is there a good comp out there for Benson's offensive output to date? Someone that would give me a bit more optimism?
  21. Played up to legion. Centerfield/second base (Class B, North Dakota, feel free to extrapolate). Above average defender, below average bat (couldn't hit anything but a fastball). I know enough to know that I don't know enough.
  22. Been following Chris's stats pretty regularly since he signed. Really hoping he gets a good chance/look as a bench bat. It's interesting (although not an "all things equal" comp) to compare his 2012 to Joe Benson's 2011.
  23. For some reason, I've totally missed his high BABIP when looking at Hicks' 2012 numbers until. However, his career in the minors has a high trending BABIP. Is he fast enough for this to be sustainable (less luck involved), is this a product of less defensive talent in the minors, or some other factor. It's interesting that players like Ben Revere and Billy Hamilton's (not nessarily presented for comp purposes) minor league careers also have high trending BABIPs.
  24. Glunn, thank you for this thread. Be it ever so humble, my brother.
  25. For comparison's sake. Hermann's bat projects higher than Martinez (PCL). He also brings positional flexibility (good for a guy who you are looking at for more than defense). Herrmann > Martinez, in my opinion. Therefore, I wouldn't have picked him up. Keep watching the waiver wire for something else. If Mauer or Doumit goes down, I'm betting Herrmann gets a call. Besides, for the limited ABs Butera will have, his defense might actually adjust for only getting on base 1 out of every 10. It's at least possible.
