  1. To the best of my knowledge before Steinbach came on board 2 years ago, the Twins have operated for years without a catcher's coach.
  2. Yes it is a ML Rule. Actually the recently raised from 6, that is why they were able to add Molitor to the staff last year.
  3. Nice thought, but you can only have 7 coaches and you need coaches to cover the areas of baserunning, infielders and outfielders along with hitting and pitching.
  4. Viola is currently a pitching coach in the Mets' minor leagues system and has been for the last 3-4 years. He doesn't have any Major League experience as a pitching coach, but he does have experience.
  5. Some people feel that the only way to change the perceived philosophy of the Twins' system is by hiring people from outside of the system. They feel that all of the internal candidates have been brainwashed to keep doing what has been done during the Gardenhire Era.
  6. IIRC, the Twins job was his when Kelly retired, but at the time he wanted to spend more time with family and didn't want the rigors of a full time gig.
  7. Don Mattingly never had any Managing experience before becoming the manager of the Dodgers. He spent several years a special instructor during Spring Training for the Yankees. Then he became the hitting coach under Torre. After Torre left the Yankees, Mattingly was a finalist for the manager's gig that went to Torre. So Mattingly left and became the hitting coach for the Dodgers under Torre. After Torre stepped down he became the manager. His only managing experience was a stint for the Phoenix Devil Dogs in the AFL (in preparation for taking over for Torre).
  8. Why would Bert take a job that requires more work, more responsibility and less pay than the one he currently has?
  9. No to Guillen and Blyleven. Blyleven makes more in broadcasting than he would as a coach, plus he only works 100 days a year. Guillen is too much of a loud mouth and I don't think he would be able to keep his mouth shut. I think Yount will be the bench coach.
  10. R.A. Dickey didn't put it together until he was 36. Prior to joining the Mets his best year was with the Twins (4.62 ERA, 92 ERA+), then he goes to the Mets and wins a cy young (granted it was his 3rd year with the Mets, but All 3 years he pitched better than he ever had.
  11. More Like one is no longer with the club.
  12. Ryan has stated that the FO would have a say in the coaching staff, it wouldn't be solely up to the manager to pick his crew.
  13. I believe other teams could interview Maddon without firing their current manager. They don't have to fire their current manager until Maddon accepts the job.
  14. I read one article that said it was a la carte, but I can't find it any more. I just read an article in the WSJ that if it is a monthly subscription service it would be about the same price as you would get it through you Cable/Satellite subscriber (i.e. $15/month). The cable providers would demand that they don't undercut them so it makes sense that HBO would have to charge the same price.
  15. It's not whether they could put it out cheaper (which I'm sure the could), it's what the market is willing to pay.
  16. It's going to be a la carte. I imagine it is going to be similar to Amazon's streaming service where you pre-pay and it will cost around $1 per episode for a show and around $2.50 for a movie.
  17. Arcia shouldn't be in Right Field let alone Left.
  18. Considering he went to college there, lives there and has coaching experience there I can see how it can be more Appealing for Hale.
  19. 2 years is probably a low estimate, 5-6 is probably more accurate. If Molitor is the new manager, Doug should be the bench coach for training.
  20. I disagree. You can't sacrifice Defense for Offense. We had the 5th best offense in the AL this year, but had one of the worst OF defenses. With our flyball pitching staff, that doesn't work very well. We need to improve the defense even if that hurts the offense somewhat. You need to find the best balance between offense and defense to be successful.
  21. Generally, the new manager gets to pick his coaching staff. Ryan will have input and may recommend that some be hired (Bruno, Molitor, Steinbach, Cuellar).
  22. I believe the Cy Young will go to Kluber instead of King Felix. Felix has a slightly better ERA, but Kluber has him beat in wins and K's.
  23. Except in is ineligible for the playoffs. In order to qualify for the playoff roster you have to be with the organization on 8/31.
  24. First, Mauer has 4 years left on his contract. 2nd I have no problem with giving top pitchers $20-30M/yr. The issue I have with pitchers is the length of contracts greater than 5 years. That is because I believe that a pitcher has a greater chance to sustain a career ending injury than a position player. Until baseball does away with multi-year guaranteed contracts that will be my stance. How many pitchers that have sign 5+ year contracts actually performed well enough to justify their salary for the majority of the contract? Johan didn't, Cliff Lee fell of the cliff.
  25. I understand what you are saying, but the financial situation between football and baseball is different. Sure in football they could draft a QB every year (or sign as a FA) and try him out and release him if he doesn't work out. All they would be out is a signing bonus and possibly the current years Salary and that's it ($10-20M total). In baseball, unless you groom your own Elite SP or acquire him before he becomes and Elite SP you have to sign him for 5-7 years at $100-200M. If he doesn't work out you are stuck with him for 5-7 years or you have to eat $100-200M. The Twins will never sign a pitcher for 5+ years (no other teams should either). So that leaves drafting pitchers and waiting for them to develop or trading for other teams minor leaguers that you think can be elite (like Santana).
