  1. I could see Rooker and Ralley as possibles to make the team, but I doubt any of these guys do. I think it's good for all of them though. I wouldn't be shocked at all though if one of these guys gets added to the 40 man and called up at some point. That will depend largely on how Cron, Austin, and Cruz do.
  2. I personally think that Enlow would benefit more from a mid-season promotion. His K rate was pretty low in CR... granted his age was also impressive, but I think I'd rather see him start strong out of the gate and see improvements in the K and BB rates and then promote him mid season. He's not a 40 man candidate for another 3 seasons, so there really isn't a reason to push him that hard unless he looks flat out awesome this spring.
  3. To an extent, it's a bit of both. We all like Astrudilo, but he's also at best a very flexible option who won't embarrass himself anywhere, but he's not going to stand out much either. He has options, and some of the other options we have on the 25 man don't. You get rid of those guys and then you're using someone a whole lot worse than Willins to fill in. That's the logic, and it makes sense even if that means Astrudillo is in AAA. It's literally a 1 day issue at most. I'm not losing too much sleep over the 25th man spot... I think you and I should both agree that we need more talent much higher up on the roster than there.
  4. Didn't realize we were on in Kimrel. I tend to agree on aging relievers, but he's 31, not 35. That seems like a very reasonable contract for a guy whose worst season in his MLB career came with a 3.4 ERA an a 14+K/9 rate. Obviously, he hasn't signed... but they really need to get him in here and not let it linger into ST.
  5. Astrudillo is on the roster... he may be in AAA, but he's on the 40 man and a flight away from filling in. That kind of depth is necessary as well.
  6. While I agree in philosophy, it requires a knowledge of the future to execute as well as a practical need (when Gonsalves and Gordon were at their peak, there was no amount of MLB quality that this team could get that would have helped them). Prospects don't develop the same, and even the best orgs make mistakes. There's a reason that baseball as a whole is moving in the direction of hoarding prospects.
  7. I think Kepler and Polanco need to be in this picture to personally... both could have their own breakouts. Would be nice if the stars alligned for this 5 in 2019.
  8. I think it's perfectly acceptable to be generally happy with the FA pickups that they got and still be unhappy that they didn't get more... That's my logic on this, and I think Ted's grade is appropriate.
  9. I think you're being generous with the D-. They could have used some help in the pen and had the funds to do something about it. They choose not to (at least so far)... Not a fan of Perez for the rotation either. I'd rather run with Mejia. I did like the FAs the got (outside of Perez, though maybe he's here b/c they think he can be a great reliver, who knows)... I thought those were smart moves and won't compain... I think I'm more annoyed right now that they could have gone out and helped the pen a bit more and have chosen not to.
  10. Jorge, if I remember right, was hitting at a Ruthian pace in late 2017 when the team was contending. He did it for a long enough period of time where you have to wonder if there's something in the bat that he can figure out and make him self a >.800 OPS type guy going forward... at 25, that's certainly possible. He's also kind of under the radar. At short, with average defense and an above average bat, he'd be a pretty solid asset. Bottom line is that he's another guy that could take a huge step forward and have us contending.
  11. I'd quibble with Nick's comments on Lynn. I don't think it was a disaster move. He had a disasterous first month, which I think we all agree on, but he was much more of typical Lynn after that... so much so that he got traded for a prospect... Yeah, I get that the first month mattered, but overall, it was a decent signing and ended up getting us some depth pieces in a lost season. You also left Rodney off, who also brought home a prospect and also had struggles at points, but was generally solid. Same with Duke.
  12. Given that the core is good enough right now to win games (the team as contructed will probably top 80 games) one would think it makes sense to shore up weak spots in some capacity. I'm not liking this standing pat thing. If Sano and Buxton turn into those guys, at the end of the year we will be wishing we had gotten a couple more players.
  13. To be fair to Falvey and Levine, we don't really know if they did push ownership... But given that the biggest deal on the table right now is 7/175, I really hope they are bugging Jim to get this one done. We're talking about inking a guy who looks like a future HOF during his prime seasons.
  14. This. I hope Baldelli does a better job at workload management. Biggest complaint about the 74 appearances is that he was being brought in during garbage time on short rest when he was pitching well. There was no reason to do that. I'd also hope that Rocco gets away from bringing in guys to face 1 batter. I really think RPs should be expected to go 1 inning more often than not.
  15. This is a no brainer in my opinion. We should do what the Cubs did with Darvish last year and swoop in. They might even be able to get away with 6/175 and just have one less year on it. Think about it. In terms of risk, Machado is much lower than most. He's an infielder, not a pitcher. He would be an ideal 3 hitter in the line up, and between him and Cruz you have some nice protection for the guys batting 1 and 2 along with guys that will be on base making it more difficult to pitch around the 5 hitter.Adrianza gets cut. Polanco moves into the utility role and should still get plenty of at bats as he covers the days off for Machado, Sano, and Schoope.Machado can play 3rd, giving us the occasional chance to rest Sano or a flex option if Sano gets hurt.It allows us to acclimate Gordon slowly during 15 day DL trips. You're getting an HOF caliber player going into his prime. They should do this.
  16. Relievers are so fickle and yet a shutdown one is so valuable... Part of that, I think is the SSS. An extra HR or two is a pretty big deal for a guy that only pitches 60-80 innings. As for Allen, yeah, I think I'd go for him, or even one of the other two that are supposedly waiting to set the market. Another option for Rocco is, in my opinion, one of the easiest pieces of low hanging fruit that could make a pretty big difference overall.
  17. and then you drank a bunch of alcohol in hopes of temporary amnesia.
  18. yeah, he went for the glove arm too... because no one ever jars a ball loose in a collision when they hit the arm/glove...
  19. I'm not too terribly worried about Sano. He wasn't allowed to put weight on that titanium rod for something like a month after the season ended in 2017. That without question affected things like conditioning. He's shown that he can be a pretty good major league baseball player, and based on the photos we've seen thus far, it looks like he's putting the effort in. Time will tell obviously, and he's got to get out of his own head from the standpoint of being able to lay off pitches 3 feet off the plate, but truthfully, I'm not too worried about him... Buxton and Kepler on the other hand, I am. Buxton needs to at least show he can be competent with the bat...and Kepler needs to finally take that step forward that he's been teasing us with for 2 seasons now. My confidence in both of them is wayning, and that's what we will need to take the central and actually win a playoff game (hopefully 11 of them).
  20. I think you're selling Tyler Austin a bit short here by not including him. I suspect if no more changes are made, he'd make the team over Duffy. Heck, even if they sigend another arm, I could see him making the team over one of the other arms listed in your pen... especially since some have options.
  21. Honestly, I think Astrudillo is that guy. He's got an option, so they can stash him in AAA... not ideal if Sano has one of those 4 day nagging injuries, but it will be acceptable if Sano hits the DL for any period of time.
  22. The article didn't mention it, but if I remember right, both Hildy and Reed were in the top 10 in IP at the points in the season where they turned into pumpkins despite being on a team that had played considerably less games due to all the weather (mostly snow) cancellations. I don't think there's a scenario where you cannot say that Molitor didn't cause this. We saw the same behavior with RPs under Gardy as well. Overuse, without question, affects RP durability and performance. I'm hoping that changes with Rocco. The real question at hand is whether they can bounce back. This underscores the need, in my opinion, to do what Brock suggests and get one more really good arm. They really should make that a priority.
  23. I suppose to a minors deal I could get behind that. The risk though, is locking up a roster spot for guys that we should be playing such as Romero or Mejia. Truthfully, there's enough AAA depth that I'm not going into camp with what we have is risky. Risk, in my opinion, is not taking advantage of some of the relievers still on the market and ignoring the pen.
  24. You may be right there, but it seems as though there was some recognition from the FO that a few folks were salty about said one year deals as well.
