  1. I don't think Prior would have been the difference between playoffs and a world series... Just my 2 cents. Mauer has a chance of being an HOF player. The real question is whether the Twins could have kept Prior healthy. I think that's a fair thing to speculate on as Baker ran Prior and Wood into the ground.
  2. Rooting for him too, but I really think he needs to prove it in AAA when the season begins. Let him build some confidence before throwing him into the fire... again.
  3. Other than an injury to Vargas, Pouffe, or Mauer, I'm not expecting Sano in MN this year (except for September) even if he's raking. Plouffe will likely be traded this offseason in that scenario.
  4. I think this kid is going to rocket up some lists this year. Call me crazy. He destroyed MWL pitching. Yeah, he's a bit older than you'd like there, but he has plate discipline to go with decent defense. I think he's going to be a decent regular some day.
  5. Me thinks Pelfrey will get traded somewhere this month for some international cap dollars (if the rumor about getting that SS is true). That would free up some space. I think they need to bring up some of the younger guys. They had a number of guys do pretty well in the high minors. Time to give them a look, especially with guys like Burdi and Reed not far behind.
  6. I was going to say something like this. The mere fact we are debating a statistic on the catchers ability to assist an umpire in getting a call right (or getting a few extra strikes for that matter) tells me we need to automate balls and strikes. The technology is there. Just do it.
  7. I'm not sure I agree that Sano should be starting over Plouffe right now. I think that's coming (probably next year), but I do think there's merit to letting 2015 play itself out. If Plouffe is traded, he won't be traded on the cheap. He's a pretty valuable 3B right now. On the other side, what is the average OPS of a 3B right now? I seem to remember it being in the low .700s. That's the price you pay moving Sano off of 3rd to DH where that average OPS is much higher. Can Sano still be a star in that role? Sure. But if he can play reasonably competent defense, his bat is still far more valuable at 3rd. Mauer to the OF... I wouldn't be surprised if that's tried this year. I wouldn't mind seeing him get some reps there. If he can cover some ground, that might solve a few of these issues.
  8. I'm curious what you base the Millone pick on. I think May is probably the favorite right now.
  9. I think there's something to be said about muscle vs. fat. There's something else to be said about him likely being a very large boned person. The large bones will probably help him from an injury standpoint, and if he's not carrying around a big belly, I'm not so sure we should be terribly worried. You're right in that he's not going to be a good defender out there. I'd like to believe that he can at least peak out around average going into his mid to late 20s. Long term, I think he moves to first or DH. As long as he can smooth out his contact issues, his bat will be exceptional enough that he can be a standout there. I do agree though that him being at 3rd for the first 5 or so years of his career would be absolutely necessary for the Twins.
  10. Minor nit to pick, but I think we all wish Steinbrenner was with the Twins I'd say the pen is a big area. I expect Tonkin to go north. I also think we will likely see Burdi, Reed, and possibly Zach Jones at some point this season. I completely disagree on May. He needs to start.
  11. I think May graduates. Meyer will get some time, not sure if it will be enough to graduate. Really not sure on Sano and Rosario. Sano is going to need some time to shake off the rust and needs to show that his contact issues in 2013 were more due to impatience than anything else. Rosario has yet to prove he can hit advanced pitching. Other than May, I think the guy who is most likely to graduate at some point this year is Burdi.
  12. I think Plouffe gets closer to 20. Mauer should improve on his number too. I expect a bit of regression from Dozier. I suspect the team will pick up a few home runs, as I think Arcia really breaks out. A full season from Vargas and Pinto should help in that capacity too, though I wouldn't be terribly surprised if Vargas in particular ends up struggling a bit and bouncing back and forth between MN and Rochester. I hope that isn't the case. I think the real improvement in this area comes when Sano arrives (hopefully) later this season.
  13. He was an intriguing draft prospect. While his defense may be good, he's not going to amount to much of anything if he cannot hit. I'd probably keep him in Elizabethon and see if that tool will progress a bit more. Moving him up to face harder pitching when he cannot hit the easier stuff doesn't strike me as a good idea.
  14. I think he should start the year in AA. I'd like to see him get off to a good start. He didn't do that last season.
  15. does anyone have the pitches/at bat stats for him and how it relates to the rest of the league? That stat would end this debate. A high number means he's being selective. A lower number means he likes to swing away.
  16. Looks to me like he took a step in the right direction in 2013 only to revert to previous behavior in 2014
  17. I'd probably let him stay in AA and watch the month to month trends. Perhaps send him to AAA, but a guy hitting .236 in AA is going to have a huge problem in MLB. Heck, Arcia raked in AA.
  18. wow, well that was quite the tangent... Got some nice laughs this morning. Keep it up.
  19. there's always going to be some variance, though at the top not as much. Not sure I'm in agreement with Meyer at 5 given how close he is to the show, but I can certainly see the merits in the debates between these 3. I'm just looking forward to all of them being in the rotation in a few years. The real question as I see it is who is going to go. Santana and Hughes won't be losing spots in the forseable future. Nolasco has 3 years on contract as well. That leaves 2 spots with guys like Gibson and May also in the mix. Someone will end up traded, or in the pen or just DFAd.
  20. I think the big issue here is that most of those intangibles are team records. Kind of hard to say credit Walker for these while not using the same criteria to credit other guys. As it is, it's not as though the Twins have been hard on the guy. He got promoted to FTM and will likely play in AA this season. Not bad for your 3rd season in the minors.
  21. Since when was starting in the MWL at 19 (and in his first full season) going slow? Most prospects his age would have been in EST and then pitched in Elizabethon or the GCL. As well, I don't have too much of a problem slowly adding to the stress that his arm gets. I think there's some prudence there, for no other reason than to build strength. It was clearly stated when he was drafted that he was going to need some work as he was a bit raw (if I remember right, he was mostly a football player in HS), so all of this makes sense. As for top of the rotation... it doesn't really matter what they believe, it won't change how they develop him, nor should it.
  22. Gibson was in his first full season, and in my opinion, he did nothing to lose the spot. He was basically an average pitcher. His big thing was a lack of Ks, which I'd like to believe will come back a bit, given that he was striking out A LOT more in the minors (his minor league K/9 is 8.05 and he slightly outperformed that in AAA). Given that his age, I think Gibson takes another step forward, and I don't think it would be wise if he were not in the rotation. Back to the topic at hand, I have to think that May is the guy they want to win this job with Milone being the next on the list. May has 1/3 upside, given the amount of Ks he gets. If he can cut that walk rate, he'll be fine. I think the job will be his as long as he performs reasonably well in ST. I hope that's the case at least b/c I don't want to see Milone there unless someone else is hurt.
  23. Probably b/c you have rookie cards of his dad. I know I do.
